Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / Bursledon Brickworks, Swanwick
« on: Friday 22 July 11 14:30 BST (UK)  »
hello,
I'm a volunteer at Bursledon Brickworks Industrial Museum. If anyone has access to 1901 census I'd be grateful if you would look up the Brickworks in the address search and let me know if there's a list of workers. It's listed as 232 (schedule) Brickyard (house) Swanwick Lane (street) Sarisbury(civil parish) Fareham(Reg district) Hampshire.

Back then the brickworks was thriving and we have managed to find the names of some workers in 1911 but they seem to be more elusive in 1901. Nowadays the brickworks is managed and run by volunteers and we've recently started a heritage project to try and identify the workforce as we have very few records.

Please help us if you can. If your ancestor worked at the brickworks we'd love to meet you!
Thanks

Canada Lookup Request / Mary Alice Williams in Nanaimo?
« on: Saturday 20 June 09 22:46 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction please. I'm looking for Mary Alice Williams and her husband Thomas Edward Williams. Mary Alice was born in Wales in 1887. She married in Wales in February 1910 and arrived in Quebec in May 1910.

I believe they settled in Nanaimo. I think I have found Mary Alice on the Nanaimo FHS passenger list - she arrived at Quebec on 7th May 1910 on Virginian. I couldn't find Thomas but maybe he left earlier?

I have a photograph of Mary Alice who was known as Polly with 3 daughters but there are no names or dates. I do know that her brother Gershom Matthias went out to visit Mary Alice in Canada and as I can't find him in the UK 1911 census I wondered if he was included in the Canadian census?

Thanks

I have the death certificate of James Lamb who was taken to the Chester General Infirmary after an accident in Buckley on 6 October 1904. the death certificate states that the inquest was held on 7 October 1904 - where can I find out more? Do you think an accident like this would have been reported in the local newspapers?

Sussex / Simmons/Gallop in Hastings before 1837
« on: Wednesday 31 May 06 07:21 BST (UK)  »
Dear All
Chris found this for me a while back and it has helped me no end in researching the Simmons/Simmonds part of my family

1841 Census for Hastings All Saints

SIMMONDS Richard, 71, Mariner, born in Sussex
                 Sarah, 45, born in Sussex
Charles, 21, Mariner, born in Sussex
                 Alfred, 18, Mariner, born Sussex
                 Elizabeth, 6, born Sussex
GALLOP Hannah, 69, born Sussex

I am descended from Charles. Now I'd like to find out more about the other siblings. I'm sure there were more between Alfred and Elizabeth. I think there was an older sister called Sarah who married John Brion but can't prove the relationship to this family. I'm wondering if Richard was married previously and I'd like to know more about Sarah's family. So many questions - where do I begin?

Where can I find this sort of information before 1837?

thanks

Jean
