Clare / Sixmilebridge RIC Morrissey around 1865?
« on: Saturday 25 June 16 12:13 BST (UK)  »
Wonder if anyone could help with a look up?

My GG Grandfather Michael Morrissey was born in Clonmel, the Waterford part rather than Tipperary (around 1839 according to UK census records) but he married a Mary Shaugnessy in Sixmilebridge in 1865.

There don't seem to be many Morrissey families around Sixmilebridge at the time so I'm not sure why he was there, but do I know Michael was later a police constable in Birkenhead so I have a suspicion he may have been in the constabulary in Ireland before moving to the UK.

My dad's cousin was told as a child that the Clonmel landowner where Michael's father worked (John Morrissey was a shepherd) persuaded Michael to 'join the army' - which might have been how the RIC was described... Kevin wasn't sure if it was just family legend or whether there was a grain of truth, but if someone could do an RIC look up for me maybe it would confirm the story? He would have been in his early to mid 20s when he was in Sixmilebridge.
I found Mary's father Patrick Shaugnessy in Sixmilebridge but can't find tithe or Griffiths records for Michael.
My great grandfather was born in Birkenhead in 1866 so Michael and Mary must have left Sixmilebridge very soon after marrying.

Lancashire Lookup Requests / 1841/1851 census Whittaker
« on: Thursday 21 April 11 22:53 BST (UK)  »
Hi, Wonder if anyone could help me with this...

I'm looking for a Whittaker family but don't know where in Lancashire they would be.

Elizabeth Whittaker, my ggg grandmother, would have been about 22 in 1851.

According to her marriage certificate her father Daniel Whittaker was a gardener.
She was born in Lancashire and married in Liverpool itself in 1854.

I've also found the wedding of a policeman, Thomas Whittaker, in Liverpool in 1855 (aged 25) whose father is also a Daniel Whittaker, gardener, so it looks likely that Thomas and Elizabeth were brother and sister.

So what I'm looking for is a census record from 1851 or earlier for Daniel Whittaker with a daughter Elizabeth and/or a son Thomas anywhere in Lancashire or the edge of Cheshire really.

Would be grateful for any help on this,

Thanks,
Julie

Cheshire / The Birkenhead Club
« on: Tuesday 18 May 10 15:09 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,
I'm hoping that someone may have some information about the Birkenhead Club at 47 Argyle Street. My GGG Grandad was the caretaker there in the 1890s and early 1900s after he retired from the police.
Other than the name of the place I know nothing about it but I'm assuming it was a working man's club or a social club. If anyone can tell me anything else about it I'd be very interested! Thanks!

Hi all,
I wonder if anyone knows whether burial records are kept at the cemetery or in the Birkenhead Archives/Library. I have the plot number and want to find if my grandfather was buried there around 1958/1959/1960. There's no headstone unfortunately.
Many thanks,
J

Worcestershire / Kemble family?
« on: Monday 03 May 10 11:27 BST (UK)  »
Any pointers?

It's just a longshot, but has anyone come across the name Kemble while trawling through records in Worcestershire?

I have a many x grandfather, Joseph Kemble - a shoemaker living in Southwark, London in the 1840s and 1850s whose place of birth is given as Worcestershire in the 1851 census.

I think he would have been born around 1790. His wife was, Mary, was the same age and born in Gloucestershire.

I wondered if anyone knew of any trade directories that would cover that area in the late 18th/ early 19th century (wondering if Joseph's father had been a shoemaker too) or if anyone knows of any 'clusters' of Kembles in the area. I don't have any idea which town or Parish so any clues would be welcome.
Many thanks, Julie

Ireland / Help please - Illegible Irish place name on UK census. Cowrush?
« on: Thursday 05 February 09 13:00 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I wonder if anyone has any suggestions as to the birthplace shown for two of my family in 1891.
On Ancestry it's been transcribed as Cownrsh but it looks like Cowrush.

It's not necessarily near Dundalk as the couple married in Birkenhead.

If anyone has any ideas at all I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks,
Julie

The name almost certainly is written with a capital C as it matches names like Cheshire and Cleveland on the same sheet.

Hi there,
I'm trying to find out where my great grandmother Lydia Agnes Cookson (her birth name was Grey) is buried. She died in 1901 at the age of 31, six months after the death of her husband Alfred. They both had TB.
Alfred is buried in Flaybrick with his father, Robert, and sisters, but Lydia is not with them. I think she may be buried with her family, possibly in Flaybrick too. Her son, my grandfather, was Catholic so it's possible that her family was too. I think Alfred is in the CoE section. I'm trying to think of a reason why the couple weren't buried with each other. Any suggestions would be welcome. Lydia's mother's family was called Reay and they had also moved to Birkenhead.
Does anyone know whether the records are kept at the cemetery or at the Wirral archive?
Thanks in advance,
Julie
