Northumberland Lookup Requests / birth details for Catharine Orde
« on: Sunday 04 September 16 07:11 BST (UK)  »
Hello

Is anyone able to help me with a lookup for birth details for my ancestor Catharine Orde.  I think she  was born in Dalton Northumberland about 1667.  Her parents were Margaret Stokoe and John Ord, I have found various spellings of the surname Ord.  Catharine married Christopher Swindall at Hexham 25 Apr 1698.  The marriage details show she was daughter of John Ord of Barker House.  I'm also interested in any information on the Orde family from the Hexham/Haydon Bridge area. Catharine is my 9th great grandmother.  I appreciate any help.

Kind regards
Lynne

Hello, I'm searching for information on my ancestor Thomas Williams who was born in Weymouth Dorset about 1791.  All of his children were born in Dorset except the youngest William Henry, who was born in Hull. 1841 & 1851 shows Thomas living in Hull and occupation as customs officer.  His occupation on birth register of all his children show mariner, seaman or customs officer. Any help with hints or adv on where to go for information would be most appreciated.  Kind regards Lynne

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Customs Officer query

Hello

I'm probably not in the correct area but I have been clutching at straws and googling which has led me here.
My 3 x great grandfather, Thomas Williams, was born in Weymouth, Dorset about 1791. He and his wife Mary (Russell) had eight children, all born in Weymouth except the youngest (William Henry b 1840 - my 2 x ggf) who was born in Hull.
1841 census shows the family living in Hull and occupation of Thomas is shown as Customs Boat.
1851 census shows Thomas still living in Hull with his second wife, Elizabeth, her two sons and his son William Henry - (first wife Mary died in 1847) - occupation of Thomas is shown as 1st class weighman in her majesty's customs.  I haven't been able to find marriage details for Thomas and Mary in the Dorset area and because Mary died before 1851 I'm not sure where she was actually born.  I was pretty much at a brick wall.  Then..........after about seven million google attempts  :o I found information relating to 'Retired Allowances for Superannuation' parliamentary papers.  It was under the heading COWES Isle of Wight and showed a Thomas Williams, Chief  Boatman in the preventing boat at St Ives - Treasury Letter, 25th February 1819 - received 32 pounds  - he had been in the service five years - the payment was for the loss of a hand, a consequence of the execution of his duty which was 'to board and rummage ships and to guard the coast against smugglers'.  I'm not sure if this is my 'Thomas Williams' - I have checked the Genuki coastguard site but he wasn't there.  I'm not sure where to go from here and I sincerely appreciate any help/tips/advice etc.  I'm in Australia so I'm not really sure about the distances and if it is feasable to think someone born in Dorset could go to Cowes and end up in Hull.  Sorry to ramble on......

Dorset / Thomas Williams and Mary Russell
« on: Sunday 22 May 16 00:04 BST (UK)  »
Hello Everyone - I have traced my 3 x great grandfather, Thomas Williams back to Dorset England. Information from death certificate of my 2 x gg father shows he was born in Hull, Yorkshire, parents Thomas Williams and Mary Russell. 1841 census confirms this and shows he was the youngest of several children all who were born in Dorset. Further searches show eldest children of Thomas and Mary were all born in Wyke Regis and some in fact married there. Occupation for Thomas is HM Customs so probably reason he went to Hull. I have searched as many records as I can find for Dorset however unable to find any marriage details for Thomas and Mary. I found one possibility - marriage banns 2 Nov 1814 Wyke Regis - however this shows surname for Mary as 'Harriss'. Further research shows marriage banns in the area for others with brides surnames as 'Harriss/Russel so not sure if there is possible hint there. I have found 2 possible birth records for Thomas both at Melcombe Regis, 7/10/1790 & 27/12/1991. Just not sure where to go from here. Any tips/advice is very much appreciated.

Dorset Lookup Requests / Thomas Williams and Mary Russell
« on: Sunday 01 May 16 01:54 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I am in Australia and have traced my g g grandfather, William Henry Williams back to his birthplace, Hull, Yorkshire.  He was the youngest of eight children all who were born and some married in Wyke Regis Dorset.  William died in Minmi, Australia and his death certificate showed his was born in Hull, his parents were Thomas Williams and Mary Russell.  His father, Thomas, worked for HM Customs.

I have checked all records that I know of for marriage details of Thomas Williams and Mary Russell in Dorset.  I also checked in Hull.  The only possibility I found was – Thomas Williams and Mary Harris, witnesses Mary Williams and William Rufsell.  Date of Banns was 2 November 1814.  If this is the one I wonder why Mary's surname is shown as Harris.  I’m assuming the witnesses were their parents so looked for birth records for Mary, I found two possibilities, there was a Mary daughter of William and Ann bapt in Broadwey 7th Jan 1792 and another Mary daughter, of William and Charlotte bapt in Charmouth March 23rd 1795.  If there is any connection her I thought it may be the Charmouth one as Charmouth and Wyke Regis are both west of Weymouth and Broadwey is north.  I’m just not sure where to go from here.  I really do appreciate any hints/tips/advice

Can anyone help with identification of the uniform my ancestor is wearing - I thought it was military but then thought maybe it might be connected to the police force.  My ancestor George Mather was born in Northumberland in 1854 and lived there until he came to Australia in 1906.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Northumberland / Seaton Terrace - Seaton Delaval
« on: Monday 28 March 16 02:24 BST (UK)  »
Hello

This is probably a bit of a strange question.  Is Seaton Terrace and address in Seaton Delaval or a place of its own.
My ancestors moved from Lowick to Seaton Delaval between 1871-1873.  Information shows a daughter being born at Seaton Terrace 1874 and another being born at Seaton Delaval 1877.  Further information shows my ancestor died in 1884 at Seaton Delaval Terrace.
