Cumberland / Prospect ? Dearham Mill Coal mining
« on: Sunday 06 July 14 15:57 BST (UK)  »
My 3rd Great Grandfather was born in 1810 in Dearham .On the 1841 census he is listed as a coal miner in a place called Prospect ... but it has been transcribed as Dearham Mill. By 1851 his family have moved to Kyo Laws and he is working at the South Tanfield Colliery in County Durham .the Durham Mining Museum website seems to list pits in Dearham from 1894 but there seems to be two undated pits  DEARHAM, Orchard Little Main and another  Dearham Crow (Abandoned: 1863).Is anyone knowledgeable about the mining in this area in the 1830s to 1850s ?They did seem to be on the move because based on baptism records they were in Standing Stone Bridekirk in 1835 and Blooming Heather in 1837  I am curious to the location of Prospect ,Standing Stone and Blooming Heather and also wonder why the family may have moved to such a new area
Thanks !

Berkshire / Anyone recognise a SLOUGH ancestor's face here?
« on: Friday 04 July 14 15:12 BST (UK)  »
My Grandad was a painter and decorator from Gateshead but he did do work in London and surrounding areas after the war. The back of  the photo has this written on .....''THESE ARE THE TOUGH BOYS AT SLOUGH,THE LADS THAT MADE SLOUGH WHAT IT IS     LOVE ALBY ''

My Grandad is not on the photo so I can only imagine these were guys he met when working down south .I thought it may be of interest to someone from the Slough area .

Hello ,
This photo was found with my Grandmothers old photos...she was born in 1915 .On the back of the photo is written 'Mam aged 4' .If this is her on the picture this would date this about 1919...would the clothing match this timeline .Her own mother was born in 1884 so the other option would be 1888 but the clothes look later than this. The only thing is that the adults in the picture look nothing like my Grandmothers parents ...I have added a photo of these people too .Thanks for any advice!

Northamptonshire Lookup Requests / Elizabeth Locke Newspaper Article
« on: Sunday 02 February 14 20:03 GMT (UK)  »
I am wondering if anyone can help .I have had a brick wall for quite a few years now and have requested help before on Rootschat in order to try to establish more information about Eliza Locke born 1850 Evenley.I know think she may have been the daughter of unmarried  Elizabeth Locke born 1830 Brackley .I do not have any credits left for British newspapers but was wondering if anyone with a subscription would kindly look up a newspaper article
The article is about the time Eliza my second great grandmother was born and I was wondering if it would give a clue to her mother or father .When she marries John Crew in 1870 (Hemel Hempstead) her wedding cert lists her father as Joseph Locke but I have never been able to find him .

BRACKLEY.
on the part the defendant, the hearing of the charge preferred by Elizabeth Lock, of Brackley St. Peter, against John Knibb,
Northampton Mercury

Many Thanks

Cumberland / 1851 Place transcribed as WHAM WHATER ??
« on: Friday 24 January 14 16:00 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone would know of a place that could have been transcribed as WHAM WHATER . My 4Th Great Grandmother Eleanor Henderson (nee Knight/McKnight)
It is in the 1851 census this name shows up
In 1851 census she is :
Age: abt 69
Leadgate Cottages Medomsley, Durham, England

As far as i know these are the other locations she lived..

Marriage to John Henderson
1808
27 Jun
Crosscanonby and Maryport, Cumberland, England

1819

Dearham Cumberland
Moorside at time of birth of daughters Jane & Eleanor

1824
Dearham Cumberland
Unerigg,Dearham at the time of daughter Marys birth
1825
Age: 42
Ellenborough and Ewanrigg, Cumberland, England
At time of birth of son Richard

1841
Age: 58
Ryton, Durham, England

I can not find a birth for her for sure ..One of her youngest sons Jacob has the middle name McKnight and I have found a birth in Distington in 1781 for a Ellenor Mcknight father Samuel but as she didnt name any of her children Samuel  this makes me unsure .I really am trying to establish where the birth place on the 1851 census may be to help locate a birth
I would be grateful if anyone has any clues ,Thanks !
