US Lookup Requests / Rachel McAuslan in US 1930
« on: Friday 02 September 11 12:39 BST (UK)  »
Trying to trace information on my Great Grand Aunt, Rachel McAuslan (born Rachel Mills in Glasgow in 1867).

Last record found was the 1930 Census:

1930 - Census - Address shown as 471 Bergen Street, Kings. Lived with children, James (26) William (40) & Letitia (33).  Shown as Widow. Age shown as 62.

James appear to have died in Connecticut in 1993 but I have no information on his family.

William came back to Glasgow in 1930.

Letitia also came back to Glasgow but went back to the US being naturalised in 1943 and she died in Brooklyn in 1962.

Any help in finding out what happened to Rachel would be appreciated - or hints on how to check it out.

Thanks

Anna :)

Armed Forces / William Kirkland of 80th Foot
« on: Tuesday 26 July 11 16:59 BST (UK)  »
Am trying to trace records for William Kirkland of the 80th Foot.  My ancestor is his daughter, Jane Ann Kirkland who was born around 1842.  Her marriage & death records show her parents as William Kirkland (Corporal, 80th Regiment of Foot) and Priscilla Munn.  Both are deceased by the time she marries in Scotland in 1864.  Searches in IGI finds a marriage for the parents in NSW Australia and I've since found that the regiment was over there at the time of her birth.

Please can anyone tell me how to find her birth records and when or how she came back to Scotland.

Thanks for reading this post.

Cheers

Australia / Looking for info - death of Hugh BROOKS
« on: Sunday 31 January 10 22:18 GMT (UK)  »
Hugh Brooks was killed in exercises off the Australian coast when in the Marines (or maybe Navy, I'm not sure).  He was married to my aunt and had gone to Australia with her and his son in the mid 1950s.  His second son was born in Australia.  He served in the forces over there and I believe helped in the rescue of a 'man overboard' in Sydney Harbour.

After he lost his life,  his wife and kids came back to Scotland.

Any help with details of his death would be much appreciated as I haven't a clue where to start !!

Thanks for all your help.

Cheers

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / John Charles Braxton - possibly born 1896
« on: Sunday 31 January 10 21:38 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find anything at all about this elusive gentleman.  He was a private in the Military Foot Police when he married one of my anscestors called Margaret McCartney McGrory in 1917 in Glasgow.  His address was given as 'On active service'.  His age is shown as 21 and his parents are John William Braxton (Barracks Labourer) and Matilda Braxton (m.s. Wells).  Both would appear to have been alive at that time.

I have searched Ancestry and so far can't find any trace of the family in the census records - and the only John C Braxton I can find was born in Woolwich in 1900.

He seems to have come out of the forces and he and Margaret had 6 children (at least 3 died within the first 24 hours) and Margaret died in 1942 - John wasn't around then and her death was registered by 'an acquaintance'.  Now that's really sad !!

Ancestry searches don't bring up many Braxton entries, so I assume that it's not a common name.

Any help would be much appreciated - I seem to be going round in circles.

Thanks

Anna

Tyrone / Marriage of James McFadyen and Agnes Rice
« on: Wednesday 06 January 10 20:48 GMT (UK)  »
Am trying to trace details of the marriage of James McFadyen and Agnes Rice.  Their son, Patrick, was born c.1827 and later married Sarah McHugh.  Any details of James, Agnes (known as Nancy), Patrick and any more of the family would really be appreciated.  Earlier records indicate that Patrick may have been born as early as 1801 - but this may have been so that he could claim a pension.

He came to Glasgow and was later joined by his daughter, Sarah, who married my gr grandfather, Hugh McGrory.

According to the Poor Relief Records held in Glasgow, Patrick came from Ardstraw in Co Tyrone and he lived with his daughter's family for most of their married life until his death in 1888.

Any help with the family in Tyrone would help destroy my brick wall !!!

Thanks

Cheers

Donegal / Marriage of James McGrory & Mary McGowan
« on: Wednesday 06 January 10 20:38 GMT (UK)  »
Am trying to trace details of this marriage - and also of their family.

Their son, Hugh, born c. 1853, was my gr grandfather and he came over to Scotland in 1872 where he married a girl from Tyrone.

Any help in tracing his family would be a godsend - grandad's brother and Hugh's youngest son, William, was still visiting family in Donegal in the early 1900s, according to notes in the Poor Relief Records held in Glasgow.

Thanks for your help

Cheers

Hi everybody

Have hit a brick wall!! which is not unusual.  Looking for detail of Angus McKinlay, born in Portree in 1801 who married Ann McDougall of Reganton (?), Perthshire in Glasgow in 1840.  If I go to Portree, where should I check for records prior to 1800 to take me back in the McKinlay family.  Any help would be much appreciated.

Armed Forces / 3rd Foot Guards - Angus McKinlay
« on: Friday 31 July 09 20:30 BST (UK)  »
Can anybody tell me what this regiment is or was?  My husband's gr gr grandfather served in this regiment between 1821 & 1843 according to records in the National Archive in Kew.  We haven't been able to check the records out as we live at the other end of the country.

It also refers to the records of Royal Chelsea and Kilmainham Hospitals - can anyone shed light on this mystery.

We can find his marriage in Glasgow in 1840 and a few children in quick succession - so can't understand how he can have been in either Chelsea or Kilmainham till 1843.

Any help would be much appreciated.
