Lancashire / Everton - Springfield
« on: Friday 30 December 11 16:59 GMT (UK)  »
I have been searching for the family of William Kelsall Tait, who is shown on the 1851 census as living in Springfield where his wife was running a school.  I assumed that this was Springfield that runs from St Anne St to Soho St until I looked at the enumerators road pattern which has it running from Lansdown Place to Walton Breck Road. - ie in Everton.  In Gore's 1843 directory 2 Springfields are given - one is Everton, but I can't find any other information.  Anybody any clues to this?

Dumfriesshire / Dormont Mill
« on: Monday 29 March 10 20:19 BST (UK)  »
My greatx2 grandmother was recorded as born at Dormont Mill near Dalton.  I have been to the house Dormont and seen that there are buildings associated with it that could have been used for an industrial activity but I wondered if anyone had any information about it.  The family were sawyers and moved to New Abbey where the eldest son became the mill manager.  The second son became mill manager at Annan, so I am assuming that the mill was a sawmill.  (Their name was Calvert and they originated in Canonbie)   Phyl

Down / samuel mccracken
« on: Sunday 13 September 09 23:17 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for Samuel McCracken born in County Down about 1861.  His only remaining grandson thinks it was Bangor, but an old letter that I have come across makes me think it was Benraw.  It mentions a Mr James McCracken, a draper who was a cousin to my grandmother and said he was raised at Benraw and that a brother was still alive on the farm. the letter was written in1967 from Castlewellan.   It also mentions an Ethel Perry whose maiden name was probably McCracken.  Any help would be much appreciated.    Phyl

Europe / anybody know about heligoland?
« on: Wednesday 12 August 09 19:01 BST (UK)  »
My greatx2grandfather was born in Bristish Heligoland and was registered a british subject according to the census.  His name was James Black and he was born about 1821.  His father's name was Frederick and we don't know where he came from although there are 2 theories.  my mother told me that  a great aunt said they came from Oban.  Other members of the family were told their name was Schwartz and they changed it.  James was in anglesey in the 1840's helping to build the Britannia Tubular Bridge, and he married a welsh girl and stayed in Menai Bridge.  I would love to find some info about his background.
