I was hoping someone may be able to tell me what and where this place name is in Co. Carvan.  I have a Bernard Roden aged 32 in the 1911 census (Tooting, London) who gives it as his bith place.

Please see hopefully attached image.

London and Middlesex / Are there records for deed poll name changes?
« on: Sunday 08 July 12 20:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi there

I have a Bernard John Roden born in 1905, Twickenham.  He appears in the 1911 census in Chelsea as the nephew of Owen & Emma McGrath.

Someone on Ancestry says that Bernard changed his name by deed poll to Bernard John McGrath.  This would certainly fit his circumstances above and that Bernard John McGrath named his son Bernard John Owen McGrath, and a family story that there was a name change.  Unfortunately, the person on Ancestry has not been on the site for over a year so I can't get in touch with them.

Do you know if there are records for deed poll name changes, and if so, can they be accessed? Bernard would have changed his name sometime between 1911 and when he married in 1930.

Many thanks ... Simon

I'm doing a bit of research for a friend who seems to have an intriguing great grand parentage.  Family members are not keen to talk about it and clearly there was some name changing and possibly partner swapping going on!  The result is that I have a list of 12 births from the indexes that I would like to see the certificates for but don't want to spend all that money on ordering from the GRO. Especially as they may not give both parent names, and what names they do give may well not be true!

Is there any other way of accessing birth certificates (1900 - 1930 era) - eg visiting the National Archives or Record Office or wherever?

Many thanks ... Simon

The Common Room / Inherited looks - how far back can they go?
« on: Sunday 27 November 11 21:09 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all

Not being particularly familiar with genetics; I was wondering how many generations back an inherited appearance can be derived.

The reason I ask is that my mother inherited from her mother: dark skin, black hair, very dark eyes and a Roman nose - a bit Romany I suppose.  But I don't know where my grandmother got these looks from.  Her father does not have that appearance but I don't know where he came from - could one of his parents have had the look that he passed on when he didn't show it?  Her mothers parents lived on Jersey but had very English surnames (Stratford & Wilcox); so they would seem an unlikely direct route.

Unfortunately I don't know how many, if any, of my grandmother's siblings also showed the same features,  The other option, of course, is that my grandmother had a different father or mother that we don't know about!

Any thoughts much appreciated ... Simon

The Common Room / Working out when a surname appears
« on: Sunday 17 July 11 21:47 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to get my head around how old a name is based on the number of people of that name at a given time.  ???

I am researching my partners Moult surname and looking at the 1841 census - there are only 268 people of that name in England, with the majority in Cheshire (77) and Nottinghamshire (70).

This strikes me as being very few especially when many of those in the total will be within the same household family.  This got me thinking that the name can't be that old.

How many generations would it take to build up to 268 people of the same name taking into account family size, male/female ratio, infant mortality, marriage rates etc?

I'm sure someone out there must have done a kind of average time - it just got my brain aching too much for a Sunday evening!  Any thoughts?  ;D

I have a marriage between Edward Henry Burrows and Martha Fisk - May 12 1858 at Clapham parish church.  Their addresses are just given as Clapham; Edward's father a Shepherd and Martha's father a Fisherman.  Neither witness is obviously related - Edward Armitage and Susan Tarrant.

I'm looking for an Edward Henry Burrows of about this time in Clapham so I would love to see what happened to these two but can't find them in any census after this marriage.

If any of you wonderful Rootschatterers out there could find them - I'd be very appreciative.  :D

Many thanks

London and Middlesex / Jordan brick wall - Wandsworth 1800's
« on: Sunday 14 November 10 20:02 GMT (UK)  »
I've not been able to get very far with my Jordan family of Clapham Common area, Wandsworth.

I have my great grandfather Joseph Jordan's marriage to Emily Clark at Clapham Common Baptist Church on 30 April 1893.  He is given as 'Hall Porter' living at 134 Manor Street in Clapham and aged 23.  His father is named as Alfred Henry Jordan - a 'Shoemaker'.  Unfortunately there are no Jordan witnesses.

I also have the birth certificates of Joseph's two children and the family in Camberwell in the 1901 and 1911 census returns.  In both Joseph is given as born in Clapham.

However there dosn't seem to be a suitable birth for a Joseph Jordan of around 1870 in FreeBMD nor in parish records through Ancestry - or for any offspring of a likely Alfred.  Nor can I find likely previous census entries for Joseph or his father Alfred Henry Jordan.

If anyone has a connection to these Jordans, or can help find where they came from, or can suggest other places to look - I would be most grateful.  :)

Lancashire / Manchester Workhouse - records?
« on: Sunday 31 October 10 17:02 GMT (UK)  »
I was wondering what records there might be for Manchester Workhouse around 1900?  And what information you are likely to find in them?

I have a John K Moult aged 11 as an 'inmate' in the Manchester Workhouse given in the 1901 census.  I would lke to know how he ended up there as I can't find his parents William (or Frederick Wiliam) Moult and Mary (or Bridget Mary) Kennedy in the same census nor ten years earlier.  I have their marriage in 1882, Ardwick, Manchester - but no trace afterwards.

Any help much appreciated.

Family History Beginners Board / A simple question
« on: Sunday 29 August 10 22:25 BST (UK)  »
Sorry - a very simple question from someone who hasn't ventured outside of online records as yet

I'm researching a number of names which are common and there are too many possibilities of the same name at the same time on FreeBMD.  In many cases I know the name of one or both of the parents.  Do the microfiche records held in archive centres and family history societies etc show parents to the child born?  If so what should I be asking to see?

Many thanks - told you it was an easy one.  :-[
