Northumberland / Bathing accident at Blyth 1914

Hi All
I have just been transcribing the gravestones at St Mary the Virgin Horton and came across 4 head stones for people who all drowned on the 21st of August 1914 at Blyth Sands. I just wondered if these where separate incidents or part of a tragedy that was reported in the local press??.

Yorkshire (North Riding) Lookup Requests / Burnside/s Stanwick St John
« on: Wednesday 11 November 09 16:28 GMT (UK)  »
Hello All
I wonder if some kind person has access to the parish records for Stanwick St John.
I am looking for any information on the Burnside/s family. In particular the marriage of Joseph to a Jane? c 1798.
I am not sure if the marriage took place there but I am sure that at least 5 children were baptized there (via IGI). Joseph & Elizabeth both baptized  4/2/1798, Joseph died the same year,  Robert 1802, Jane 1804 & Joseph 1808. I think that Jane died in 1824 and Joseph went on to marry Ann Gurdinson in 1828 in Stanwick St John.

Durham / Joseph Burnside, Cockerton
« on: Thursday 08 October 09 20:43 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I am looking for any information for the parents of Joseph Burnside born circa 1826 in Cockerton.
I have pretty much all the information from census records and marriages, he was married twice both certificates show no father. I know that begs the question was he illegitimate, very possible. I have trawled the IGI & the BTs to no avail. The only clue I can find is via the census which is that Joseph is living with his uncle Robert Burnside (b circa 1780 at Brafferton) in 1841,1851 & 1861. If Robert was indeed Josephs Uncle then the lack of a fathers name would suggest that Joseph was born to a sister of Roberts, and heres the bug bear, possible sisters for Robert show as being a wee bit to old to be bearing children ( youngest I can find would have been 49 when Joseph was born, not impossible, but unlikely) So hopefully a fresh pair of eyes can help me with this.

Census and Resource Discussion / What Just Happened To Ancestry
« on: Sunday 05 July 09 11:37 BST (UK)  »
Hi All

Did I just miss something or did Ancestry change for the worse. The new family tree page is awful. I just got comfortable with the old setup and now I have to spend months getting used to the new layout. Nice of them to ask.

The Common Room / What makes it all worthwhile
« on: Monday 12 January 09 22:21 GMT (UK)  »
I was wondering what make Genealogy worthwhile to fellow roots chatters.
The reason I ask is because I recently had the biggest thrill I've had since I started researching my own family tree. The thing is the thrill came from not discovering a member of my own family but from someone else's. As most Root Chatters will know researching family becomes addictive to the point that when your at a loose end with your own family you find yourself drawn to helping others, highly commendable I must say. I photograph gravestones for a hobby and try to transcribe the inscriptions into some kind of meaningful information. Photographs are the easy bit, I dint take any notice of whats on the stone( if I did I would only take 5 photos a day) I shoot until I have 1500 pics or the battery goes flat. The fun bit is when I get the pictures on to my PC.
It is then I actuallay read whats on the stones. For the most part most stones have bog standard inscriptions IE. Ellen wife of so and so died 1867 aged 45 etc. Every now and then I come across an inscription that makes me think WOW. The one that made more happy, as if someones demise could make anyone happy, was an inscription for someone who died in the US of A but was buried in Gateshead. Curiosity got the better of me so I looked for any one researching the name on the gravestone and low and behold there it was someone in the USA looking for the gravestone. I am pleased to inform you that family and gravestone are reunited.
