I hope someone can throw some light on this 'mystery'.

The following, rather confusing, information appears on the IGI:

Mary E COLLETT born about 1851 Louta Falla, Victoria, Monmouth, England.

In the 1861 UK Census, Mary Ellen and her parents are living in Chedworth, Gloucestershire, UK. Mary's place of birth is shown as 'Douta Galla, Victoria ?'

In the 1881 UK Census, Mary, who is now married to Richard HICKS, is shown as having been born in 'Chedworth, Glos.'

In the 1891 UK Census, by which time Mary Ellen is a Widow, her place of birth is shown as 'Australia, Melbourne'.

Is there a way of checking if Mary was, indeed, born in Australia?

If this is the case, would someone be able to throw some light on why her parents might have been in Australia at that time?

Her Father was shown as a Grocer and Bacon Factor in the 1861 UK Census. He and his Wife had at least six children (one born before Mary Ellen), all of whom were born in Gloucestershire.

Any help that can be offered would be much appreciated.

The Common Room / 'Ruthven' as a second name...
« on: Monday 28 December 09 18:51 GMT (UK)  »
I have an ancestor who has the second forename of 'Ruthven'.

I haven't been able to relate this name to a family surname from an earlier generation.

I did a check on Free BMD and was very surprised to discover that it was a frequently given second forename - it appears to have been less frequently given as a first name.

Does anyone have any ideas as to why this name may have been popular - is there some historical significance?

I have the Family in the 1891 Census:

116 St George's Avenue, Islington
Evan D RICHARDS 31 Army Accoutrement Maker b London St Pancras
Wilhelmina 32
Alec H 2
Doris M 3 mo

After having spent some of the family's inheritance on the 1911 Census yesterday (!), I now know that the Family were living at 16 Denman Street, Picadilly Circus in 1911:

Evan David RICHARDS 51 Licensed Victualler
Wilhelmina Allan 51
Alec Herbert 22
Leslie John 18

I already knew that Doris Mina had died but the information on the 1911 Census shows that there were '4 children born alive' and only '3 children living'.

If someone would be kind enough to check the 1901 Census for me, it may well give me some information about a fourth child.

Many thanks in anticipation of any help that can be offered.

I understand that a John MADAGAN was the Station Master at Windsor Railway Station in the 1850s.

In the hope that he either lived at the Station or not far from it I would be very grateful if someone with access to either the 1851 or 1861 Census would be kind enough to see if he (and any family) can be found.

If he is in the area, I would be interested to know his place of birth.

Many thanks.

Scotland / OGSTON - Scotland 1891/1901
« on: Wednesday 11 April 07 15:33 BST (UK)  »
I hope someone can help me, as I'm in a quandary!

Jessie OGSTON born 1866 - in Marylebone , Middx - appears to have married her cousin James Fowler OGSTON in 1888 (Q Mar 1888 Kensington 1a 129).

Family rumour has it that the couple went to live in Scotland after their marriage and, whilst I have no definite information to confirm this was so, there is a strong possibility that they may have settled in the Glasgow area.

I would be very grateful if someone with access to the Scotland 1891 and/or the 1901 Census would be kind enough to see if the OGSTONs - and any family that may have had - can be found.

Many thanks

I know that Leverton Street still exists but does anyone know if No 46 Leverton Street is still standing?

My GG Grandfather owned a number of properties in the Middlesex area but this one is of particular interest as it was the one left to my Great-Grandfather in his Father's Will (written in 1900).

If anyone is able to photograph the property and PM it to me, I would be most grateful.

Many thanks.
