Yorkshire (West Riding) / Armitage Huddersfield
« on: Thursday 23 February 12 15:24 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I orginally posted this message on the Cheshire board, but I am wondering if there might me some information in Huddersfield as Cheshire has drawn a blank!

I wonder if anyone can help me understand an article I have recently discovered in the Huddersfield Chronicle, 19th May 1866.

'The clerk informed the board that, with respect to the case of Kate Armitage, who was alleged to have been illegal induced to remove to Huddersfield from Knutsford had laid all the particulars before the poor law board who had replied that the relief by which the woman was enabled to come to Huddersfield had not been advanced by an officer of the board, but by an overseer; the attention of the district auditor would therefore be called to the item, should it be charged in the Union accounts. He (the clerk) had also informed the Poor law board that the guardians had agreed to carry out the suggestions of Mr Wilkes, the Lunacy Commissioner, with regard to Deanhouse Workhouse, and the poor law board returned thanks for the attention paid to the commissioners’ recommendations'.

I know that Kate was born in Knutsford in 1832, the daughter of Peter Richardson and Mary Davies. Peter was a shopkeeper in Knutsford and later moved to Mobberley. I believe he became an Alderman. I can track Kate in the 1841 and 51 census but there is no sign of her in 1861. The next record is the registration of her daughter Annie in Bradford in 1863, she is listed at this time as Kate Armitage and Annie’s father is William Armitage a draper. Their next child William was born in Nottingham in 1864. William senior is listed as a policeman at the time. I do have his police records but the only personal information is that he was born in about 1835, sadly no location. William Snr died in Nottingham in 1865. I had always presumed that Kate then moved to Huddersfield as their third child Jane was born there in 1866 (April-June). However, now that I have discovered this article I guess she first went back to Knutsford.

I am intrigued to understand the article, had she been in an asylum? What is an overseer? Would there be any records of this in Cheshire or Huddersfield? There is no mention of the children in this article, would they be elsewhere?

Kate had rather a sad life, she remarried a John Walker and had a son George, but John died and she spent the rest of her life in and out of the workhouse. She died in Crumpsall Workhouse in 1906.

Any ideas would be gratefully received. Marge  ;)

World War Two / Royal Engineers Burma WW2
« on: Monday 08 November 10 20:24 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

My great uncle Sidney Kendall was a sapper in the RE during WW2. He died in service in Burma on or around the 17/18 March 1944. I understand that he was working on a bridge that came under attack and he was presumed drowned. (Although I can't confirm this). There is a memorial at Rangoon cemetery.

I would like to try and find out a little more about the incident. Sadly I work full time and live a long way from London so I am unable to visit the national archives. I have looked at their web site, but just felt confused!!

Can anyone advise me if it is worth getting Sidney's service records - or will I get very little for my £30. Also, would there be any organisation that might hold some piece of information that might help me pin point the actual place of death and to get an idea of what was happening at the time.

Many thanks

World War Two / Air Raid Precautions

Hi

Wasn't sure if to post this here or on the occupational interests board. My grandfather served with the Air Raid Patrol during world war two and until the time of his death. He died in Raywell sanatorium in 1944 of TB. He was 37.

Would anyone know if any personnel records would survive anywhere? My father was a small boy when he died and he knows little of him. It would be interesting to know more of what he did during the war.

Many thanks

Marge :)

Mayo / Help with Mayo surname query
« on: Friday 26 March 10 19:28 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I am trying to trace a marriage for John Brannan. I know that his wife was Ann and that they had a son Patrick, born in Bilston Staffs in 1865. Patrick's birth certificate says his mothers surname was RUAN.

There is a marriage index in for a John Brannan and Ann ROWAN in 1864 (Wolverhampton). Is it possible that the surname is Rowan, or is there another spelling of Ruan? I guess if she wasn't literate that the register could have mis spelled the name. Are there any other similar sounding surnames that are common in county mayo?

According to census records both John and Ann were born in County Mayo in 1841. Many thanks Marge

Hi

I am trying to find the baptism records for the children of John and Ann Brannan (Brannon/Brennan/Brannen). John was an iron worker and lived in Newcastle under Lyme in 1871. I know John and Ann came from County Mayo in Ireland - if possible I would like to discover Ann's maiden name. Children born in Newcastle are;

Mary abt1867
Ann abt1869
Thomas abt1874
James abt1876
Michael abt1880

Many thanks in advance

Hi

I am trying to find some details on Patrick Brannan (also Brennan/Brannon and Brannen) born in Bilston around 1866. There is a listing on BMD in Wolverhampton 1865, this may be it.

I know from census that his Parents were John and Ann, and that the came from County Mayo. I would like to trace this further, but am looking for Ann's maiden name so I can locate their marriage.

I am guessing the family were roman catholics. Does anyone have any RC records that may be able to help me? Many thanks in advance

Marge :)

Nottinghamshire / My brick wall - new clue!
« on: Saturday 27 February 10 13:36 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I am trying to locate more information on William ARMITAGE. Up until now the only details that I had are: he was married to Kate Richardson (although I can find no marriage). They had three children Annie b1863 Bradford, William b1864 Nottingham and Jane b1866 Huddersfield. I know William had died before 1870 as his wife remarried, stating at her marriage that she was a widow.

As the details I have fall between census dates it is really hard to find anything. However, after a couple of wrongly purchased death certificates I have today located the correct one. I had been looking in Huddersfield, but it turns out William died in Nottingham in 1865, before the birth of his youngest daughter.

Details on the death certificate are that he died on the 8th October 1865 at the General Hospital of an aneurysm of the aorta. He was 33 years old and a policeman (this matches William's birth certificate). Present at the death was Charles Lalthbridge. The death was registered in the Park district.

Would anyone be able to tell me were I might find burial or cremation records for this are? Many thanks Marge  :)

Staffordshire completed Look up Requests / Penkhull - help with missing family
« on: Sunday 20 September 09 16:22 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I am trying to establish what happened to William & Mary Hulme.

William was born in Stoke on Trent in 1832. He married Mary Turner (also from Stoke) at Trent Vale Church on 5/8/1860. I can find them in the 1861 and 1871 census living both times in Penkhull. By 1871 they had 5 daughters, Sarah, Mary, Rose Hannah, Anna and Martha Jane.

The trail then seems to go cold. Other than his daughters Sarah and Mary (who incidentally went on to marry the same man!) The family seems to dissapear. I can find a death listed for a William Hulme in Stoke of Trent, 1872. The age of this man seems to fit, but there are so many William Hulmes listed I may have this wrong.

There is also a death for a Mary Hulme in 1881 in Stafford.

If it helps William was a potter. I am not familiar with the area. I have found a great site with transcribed MI's, but I'm not sure which grave yards I should look at. Can anyone help me?

Many thanks
