Berwickshire / Dingleton Hospital Melrose
« on: Wednesday 07 March 12 09:29 GMT (UK)  »

If someone died at Dingleton hospital in 1918, where would they
be interred after they passed away?

If perhaps family did not know they were there? Or if the family's
whereabouts was unknown...in the days pre Telephones, Computers, and ordinary folk not owning a Car???

Berwickshire / Aitchison, Renton
« on: Wednesday 07 March 12 09:24 GMT (UK)  »

I am looking for the death of John Aitchison born Brierry hill Duns 1867.
Son of Helen Aitchison born 1844 Died 1918.

The only John Aitchison I could find born 1867, died at Edrom in 1913. The details on the death certificate are all wrong, so I now suspect that this might be the wrong John?

John is on the 1901 & 1911 census at Whitfield farm Ayton.

His wife Janet Collins Renton died 1935 at Abbey St. Bathan. She was a Widow by then.

At a loose end?? Any help much appreciated

Berwickshire / Military returns WW One
« on: Sunday 06 November 11 09:26 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know how the Military Returns system worked?

I have a Private William Jenkinson 7th Seaforth Highlanders ,who died at a Military Hospital in Clitheroe Lancashire, England. He is interred beside his family at Greenlaw Berwickshire. He came back as a Royal Scot. Not a Seaforth Highlander.

Did the Army send his body North on a train and the family then have to go to a Railway Station with a Horse & Cart to pick the man up?
How exactly did it work?

In WW! the casualty figures were massive, unimaginable really.
The Battle of Loos & the Battle of the Somme were catastrophic by any standards.

I doubt also if parents or brothers & Sisters on receipt of the deceased would be allowed to view them, due to in many cases, horrific injries.

Berwickshire / Burial at Ayton.
« on: Thursday 20 October 11 09:53 BST (UK)  »
My Great Great Grandfather Robert Jenkinson died at Ayton Law in 1918. His wife pre deseased him at Swinton in 1905.

My Great Grandfathers wife Jane Jenkinson died at Ayton Law in 1930.
My Great Grandfather T G Aitchison died at Dalkieth Hospital in 1949.
Witnesses from 1949 said the cortege left and went to Ayton Cemetery.

In the 1980's my Grandfather could not recall where his Grampaw, Mother or father were buried, during a visit there in @ 1981  ? He just stood at the gate & shrugged saying "the place has fairly filled up since 1930".

Berwickshire Council could not tell me a few years ago where my Great Grandparents were interred? They don't have the records for Section A of Ayton Kirk Yard. Lost.

Is there any other way of finding out where a person is buried in a Cemetery?

Ayrshire / Aitchison, Smith, bates, McConnachie in Dallmellington
« on: Tuesday 18 October 11 09:59 BST (UK)  »

Looking for information on Thomas Edmonstone Aitchison. He was born at Horsely Coldingham Berwickshire in 1850. He married Mary Smith and later Margaret McConnachie. He lived in Dallmellington Ayrshire.
He was a foreman Joiner with the Railways and later with a Colliery.

It would be interesting to know where he got the middle name Edmonstone? Or any other details about him.

Berwickshire / Old Soldier at Edrom. Adam Sutherland
« on: Monday 17 October 11 10:19 BST (UK)  »

Whilst raking around the Kirk Yard at Edrom I found a Soldiers Grave.
It was covered in algae so i gave it a bit of a clean up. He was evidently a local Fella, who was not forgotten by his former comrades.

Erected by fellow ex Service men in memory of
                  Adam H Sutherland
               Who died from War Wounds
                  15th October 1934 age 58
By the begining of WW1 he would have been almost 38 years old.
He may have been a militia man that joined up even although he was older? He may have served in the Boer War, when he would have been in his mid 20's?

Anyone know anything about Adam? Just a matter of interest.
