Cardiganshire Lookup Requests / Catherine Owens will - look up pls - COMPLETE
« on: Tuesday 29 June 10 14:40 BST (UK)  »
UPDATE: no longer needed, thanks!

Pls see also this post:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=460694.new;topicseen#new

I am trying to trace a will for Catherine Owens of Penpark/Benpark, Llandisilliogogo - died 2 Dec 1873 aged approx 76.
On the 1871 census she is living at Pen/Benpark with her granddaughter Catherine Evans (in 1881 census Penpark is uninhabited....)

Catherine's husband Owen died intestate in 1851 and I have the documents (from National Library of Wales) showing that all his property was legally given over to Catherine.

So now I am hoping to see who she left it to upon her death - I'm trying to establish who their children were, or more specifically whether Owen Owen(s) born ca 1833-4 in Llanllwchaiarn is their son or not (Owen is my gt gt grandfather)

Any assistance gratefully received
thanks!

The Common Room / Can you help with these puzzles?
« on: Sunday 06 June 10 19:16 BST (UK)  »
Mods - pls move if this is in the wrong place, wasn't sure where to post  :)

Puzzle One
My great grandfather had 7 siblings. 2 were called Catherine. I had assumed the 2nd was named after a sister who had died before she was born.

However, I've just got the 2nd Catherine's birth certificate and she was born 15th March 1869.
Headstone on 1st Catherine's grave has her date of death as 19th Sept 1869 - 6 months after her sister was born

Would it be common to give 2 children the same name in this way? Seems very odd to me....

Puzzle 2

I have birth certificates for my grandfather James (born 1863) and 2 of his siblings Catherine and Sarah (born 1869 and 1871).
In all 3 cases the address is consistent (the family farm), as is father's name (Owen Owens) and occupation. However James and Sarah's certificates show mother as Mary Owens formerly Davies, whereas Catherine's shows mother as Mary Owens formerly Jones
Just an error on someone's part? Surely not a different wife since Catherine was born between James and Sarah....

Can't find any record of a marriage on BMD between Owen Owens and Mary Jones or Davies so am a bit stuck as to where to go next....any suggestions?

Thanks for any thoughts,

Cardiganshire / Can anyone help with my Owens of Llandysiliogogo?
« on: Thursday 06 August 09 21:11 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

Hoping you can help with a bit of a brick wall I seem to have reached  :)

My aunt did some research into the family tree and passed on her notes to me. From these notes, my great great grandfather was Owen Owens, born in about 1833 in Llanllwchaiaern, died January 1880 in a pit accident at Dowlais Colliery.
He married Mary (surname unknown - have not found marriage yet - assume around 1857 as first child born around 1858) and had 8 children. Mary died in 1904 and is buried at Capel Wig nr Llangranog
According to my aunt, Owen is also buried there, but I could not find his gravestone when I visited...

On the 1871 census, Owen and Mary are living at Brynsoden, Llanllwchaiaern with their children Ellen, James (my great grandfather), David and Catherine.

So far so good apart from the missing gravestone....

My aunt then has Owen's parents listed as Cathrine and Owen Owens. These two are buried at Capel Wig and I have found what I am pretty sure is them in the following census (gravestone makes reference to Benpark, Lllandissiliogogo so it fits):

1841 Llandisilio Gogo
Owen and Cathrine both aged 40, Margaret 16, Jane 14, Thomas 13, John 2, Elizabeth 6 months

1851 Ben Park, Llandisiliogogo
Owen and Cathrine both aged 53
Children: Jane 26, Thomas 24, John 12, Elizabeth 9
Grandson (assume this is Margaret's son) Owen Evans 5

1871 Llandisiliogogo
Cathrine Owens 72
Grand dau Cathrine Evans aged 20

Can't find them in 1861.

So here is the mystery: if Owen Jnr is the son of Owen Snr & Cathrine, then why does he not appear on any of the census? In 1841 he would have been 8 so surely too young to be away from home?

I can't find Owen Jnr in 1861 either - is the Llandissilio census perhaps missing/incomplete for 1861?

Not really sure where to go now in order to either prove or disprove that Owen Jnr's parents were Owen and Cathrine and to make some progress

All thoughts/assistance most welcome
Thank you!

Wales / Could someone kindly translate this from Welsh to English for me?
« on: Tuesday 04 August 09 21:14 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

From a gravestone - really just want to know month of death but when I looked up months of the year online, none of them match words in this text...

Er, serchus gof am Owen Owens Synodfach, bu fawr chwer 9, 1950, yn 49 oed
Bwrir ni bawb i orwedd o ferw'r byd ar fyr i'r bedd
Hefyd ei briod Mary Owens by fawr tach 29, 1977 yn 84 oed
Oddiwrth y plant

Much appreciated  :)

Hi everyone,

Two pics attached. In the first one the lady seated is my gt grandma with her daughter, born 1899 - the child looks maybe 4 or 5 I think, so pic would have been 1904-5 - does that look about right?

In the second pic, it's gt grandma again (at least I think so) but not sure if it's also the same daughter, and therefore the pic is around 1899-1900. As far as I know the only other child was my grandfather born 1903 - but I think the child in the pic is a girl?

Your expert opinions much appreciated

Thanks!

Hi all,

Wondering if anyone can help with birth/christening for Ann Nightingale, born approx 1830-35 in Waltham St Lawrence
(according to 3 different census - 71, 81, 91, she was either born in 1830, 1835 or 1833)

Father Thomas (from marriage certificate) - a farmer

May have had a brother called George (a George Nightingale was witness at Ann's wedding to Charles Tedder in 1857)

From IGI can only see an Ann born 1822 which would seem to be too early. There is a George born 1835 to Thomas and Elizabeth so that might be the brother

Can't find Thomas and family on 1841 or 1851 census...so if anyone can track them down, that would also be great  :)

Any help much appreciated
Thanks
