Tyrone / Lisdoonan - William SMYTH(Smith)
« on: Wednesday 13 February 13 06:31 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there,

I have found another Sloan desc. record that i think is mine and am hoping someone may help me.

It is from the Londonderry Sentinel
July 31 1866

July 26, at the Second Presbyterian Church, Newtownstewart, by the Rev. Francis Little, MR. ALEXANDER HOOD, of Deerpark, county Tyrone, to MISS MARY D.(Davison/Davidson) SMYTH, second daughter of MR. WILLIAM SMYTH, Lisdoonan, county Tyrone

I have looked for a Lisdoonan in County Tyrone but can only come up with one in Saintfield, County Down NI about 5 miles from Ballygowan/Ballyrush which is where my Sloans were.

So i now have

Elizabeth SLOAN born 1812 of Ballyrush married to William SMYTH (proved from their daughter Maria Frazer-Hurst's death cert in Scotland)

From looking at the Belfast Newsletter i have confirmed that my Margaret Sloan born 1817 (Elizabeth's younger sister) married James Davison SMYTH of Moneyrea on the 10th of December 1838

I am looking for any records on this William SMYTH (sometimes spelt SMITH) of Lisdoonan and family and also on on James Davison(Davidson) SMYTH of Moneyrea.  I am unsure what Church they worshiped at but they are ALL Presbyterian

I have looked at Proni wills and Griffiths Valuation and found Mary Hood on the 1901 census which states she was born in County Down.  She was living in Londonderry.

Cheers and thank you for any help
Jo

Down / SLOAN/REID Ballyrush, Ballygowan area
« on: Tuesday 01 May 12 06:57 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,
I have just heard from an older newly found relative in Northern Ireland  that one of my missing Sloan's Mary SLOAN born 1810 (2nd daughter of Robert Sloan and Elizabeth Kennedy of Ballyrush, Comber) married a Robert REID of Ballygowan in the 1830's.

She also stated there was a connection of Ardmore House Ballygowan and i have found the births records of some children to a Robert REID and Agnes DICKSON in the 1860's. From research on the internet I believe that the Dicksons owned Ardmore House.

How do i find a marriage in the 1830's which i presume may be in Comber as the Ballygowan Presbyterian Church was not built until 1840 for my Mary Sloan and Robert Reid.

AND how do we find the births for the children of that marriage.  I have looked at most sites but nothing seems to jell well.  Mary Sloan's brother Robert Sloan of Ballyrush and his wife Margaret Nelson had a son named Thomas Reid Sloan so i could also assume that Mary Sloan married a Thomas Reid (instead of Robert) and had a son Robert Reid who in turn married a Agnes Dickson.

Also are the Down Recorder Archives available online to search the 1840's and 50's.  I have previously looked at it on line but now cannot find my link.

Cheers Jo

Down / James Morrow SLOANE
« on: Saturday 02 April 11 08:18 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

i am looking for the family a bit more towards the mid 20th Century.

I have William Cooke Nelson SLOANE born 1864, Ballyrush, Comber married to Sara DOUGLAS.  I have found them living in 1901 and 1911 censuses and at 81 Castlereagh Street on the Ulster Covenant Record of 1912 but have lost him from then onwards.  He was an agent, but he trained to be a Doctor and then became a Pharmaceutical Agent instead so he may not have passed.

He had three children that i have found so far, all born in County Down.

James M SLOANE born Newtownards 1896/7 (This is written in 1911 census as looking like a U but i am sure it is an M)
Alice SLOANE born 1899
Jane Smith Harris SLOANE born 1901.

I have found reference to a James Morrow SLOANE born last quarter of 1896 in County Down as a Doctor Qualifying in 1923 and becoming a Captain Surgeon in the Navy? in 1948. (London Gazette).  His address was listed as Whiterock, Killinchy, Belfast.

I would love to trace James and William if possible.

Cheers Jo

« on: Sunday 24 October 10 06:50 BST (UK)  »
Hi all again

I have another query, this time for Livingston.  All the info i have has come from a handwritten family tree from circa 1908 with NO DATES attached. The dates i have put in are from records i have found.

In Dromore, County Down
I have a Joseph LIVINGSTON married to ?? McFadden circa 1790-1800? (verified from  PRONI E Catalogue) They have the following children.

1. Samuel (may have married a Jane Graham and had the following children a) James b 1833, b)Hertford born 1837, c)William born 1835, d)Jane born 1831, e)Elizabeth born 1830 f) Thomas born 1839)

2. Joseph

3. Hertford (Henry) born 1802 died 1860 (from Belfast Newsletter) married Belinda Burrows and had
a)Margaret to ?Hill and or Clark
b)Mary Ann married 1. James C Wright and 2. John Dick
c)Elizabeth Lucinda born 1846 married to 1. Fred. Stoeckle 2. James Kennedy Sloan 1883 3. William Gould 1908. (I have these ones)
    d) 6 other children that died young

4.Mary born 1809, married to 1. Thomas Frazer 2. Charles Hurst in 1851 aged 42 (Fraser-Hurst) - I have all these

5.Ann born circa 1810, married to Samuel Dalzell.  Ann died 6/8/1882 and her will is at PRONI

6.Margaret married ? Egan and had 4 girls one of whom married a Robert Butchart

7. John (may have married a Elizabeth Gourley on 11 May 1855) His father was Joseph Livingston.

To top it all off somehow these are tied to the Rev. Samuel Livingston of Portaferry, County Down born 1780 and died 2/18/1864 - PLUS another five generations back according to this family tree but i cannot find a link..

Rev. Samuel Livingston MAY have been a brother/cousin ???? of Joseph Livingston of Dromore?
He married Eliza Dalzell and they had the following children

1. James
2. William John - I think he is the one who went to USA
3. Samuel
4. Anne Jane
5. Eliza
6. Isabella - she married Dr Wimbourne Jackson  on 21 Oct 1851
7. Rachel
8. Susan married Fred Chandler son of William Chandler

The handwritten tree goes back to 1547.

If anyone has any info on any of the above or is related i would love to hear from you.

Cheers Jo

Derry (Londonderry) / SMYTH - Drimbolg
« on: Sunday 10 October 10 05:49 BST (UK)  »
Hi there

I have previously posted this in County Down as the Sloan part of my family were from there.
I do know that Maria SMYTH who married Hugh FRAZER-HURST is the niece of my James Kennedy Sloan and William Kennedy Sloan and her mother was Elizabeth Sloan and father was William SMYTH, farmer.  Either the Rev. James A SMYTH was William's brother or maybe cousin and his wife may be the elder sister of Elizabeth??? Until i can find out who Jane was i won't know.

I have three KNOWN Smyth girls.

1. Maria Smyth born 1848 married in 1871 to Hugh Frazer-Hurst. Father listed as William Smyth  Died in Scotland 1933 - Parents listed as William Smyth, Farmer and Elizabeth Sloan. Not known where she was born.

2. Elizabeth Smyth born approx 1845, Died May 1909 - Hugh and Maria Frazer-Hurst were executors of her will.
Born County Londonderry according to 1901 census

3. Sarah Smyth born approx 1846 married Rev. Joseph Frazer-Hurst at Drimbolg Ref. Presb. Church in May 1871,    died in Fermoy, County Cork after 1901 parent listed as Rev. James Smyth Minister of R P Church and witnesses to the wedding were Maria Smyth and Hugh Frazer-Hurst. She was born in County Londonderry according to the 1901 census of Fermoy County Cork

Then i found the Drimbolg Graveyard Inscriptions on line

In Memory of the
Revd James. A. Smyth.M.A.
For 45 years the beloved
Minister of this congregation,
Who died 29th December 1873,
Aged 73 years.
And Jane, His wife who died
9th April 1855, Aged 43 years,
Also his daughters
Elizabeth, Sarah, Margaret Jane
Maryanne and Maria
Elizabeth Smyth,
Died 20th May 1909.
Also James Alexander Smyth,
Who died 25th April 1933.
Also his wife,
Margaret Ann Smyth,
Who died 22nd September 1943.
Their daughter Maud,
Died 24th August 1981 Aged 65 years.

Is Maria his daughter and not William's - could there be two Maria's ??

The only marriage i could find for a Sloan and Smyth is for Margaret Sloane and James Davis (this is wrong middle name i have researched this) Smyth on the 10 Dec 1838 County Down and it was a submission not a record at IGI.

Again any help would be appreciated.

Cheers Jo

Other Countries / BRAZIL - Harrison of Rio de Janeiro
« on: Sunday 18 October 09 00:25 BST (UK)  »
Hi Everyone
I am new at this forum but have been searching for Ernest Laurence Harrison of Rio de Janeiro for a while.
His father Francis Henry Harrison  and wife Rosa nee Tripp went to Rio from England approx 1875 and had two sons in Rio.  Alfred Henry Harrison born 1878 and Ernest Laurence Harrison born in 1879.  Ernest was in 1922 the Lloyd's agent in Rio and had previously married an Ivy Selina??  They didn't marry in England and i could not find them or any children on the Consular records.  Francis Henry Harrison returned to England circa 1896 and died at The Hall, Bushey , Hertfordshire.  His wife Rosa died in 1880 - ?? in Rio de Janeiro. 1922 is the last mention i have of Ernest and Alfred was a Capt in the Army but didn't die in WW1 so  i assume he may have gone back to Rio.
Any help anyone can give me would be great.  I have emailed Lloyd's today so hope they will reply.  I live in the South Island of New Zealand.
Cheers
Jo

Down / SLOAN/SLOANE & KENNEDY
« on: Saturday 03 January 09 20:28 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there, I am new to this forum but not new to family history research.  I have two brothers William Kennedy Sloan b 1828 Belfast (on his wedding cert) and James Kennedy Sloane b 1830 Comber County Down ( on his wedding cert).  The are DEFINITELY brothers (from Family correspondence) and their parents are both listed as Robert Sloane and Elizabeth Kennedy. William dropped the E after his marriage. I have looked high and low for this family but have found nothing in Ireland (Ulster HF searched for me in the 1980's).  William Kennedy Sloan went to Dumbarton, Scotland approx 1851 coming back to get married for the second time in 1883 to Lucinda Elizabeth Stoeckel nee Livingston in Belfast and James Kennedy Sloane went to Australia approx 1851 and thence to New Zealand 1862.
James is definite about Comber on all his childrens birth certs and on his death cert in Australia in 1897 it still lists Comber.  William has Belfast only on his marriage certificate.  Can anyone help me find a marriage or death.  I have joined and looked at many sites but no joy so far.  Thanks in advance.  Jo
