My ancestor, John Oliver, is shown living in Bramwith Woodhouse, Kirk Bramwith, in the 1841/51/61 censuses. However, the 1851 and 1861 censuses state John's birthplace as Smeaton, Yorkshire. I'm not sure but I'm guessing this may be Kirk Smeaton.

Is anyone able to please look up the baptisms for Kirk Smeaton for me. I believe he was born in about 1802. I'd like to know who his parents were and any other information that might be available.

Many thanks.

Annie

Warwickshire Lookup Requests / St Thomas baptism lookup please - Henry Ridley
« on: Friday 03 September 10 02:33 BST (UK)  »
The IGI has a baptism for Henry Ridley on 26 MAY 1839 at Saint Thomas, Birmingham, Warwickshire. The child was apparently born on 28 APR 1839 and the parents' names were William John and Lydia Ridley.

I've been having a very difficult time of tying down my gg-grandfather, Henry Ridley. All I know is that he was born in Birmingham and was a blacksmith in 1871. His age on the census looks like 30 but it's difficult to read. I can't identify a suitable birth in FreeBMD. I'm hoping the baptism record might give an abode and the father's profession which then might tally with earlier censuses.

Any help with my brick wall will be gratefully received.

Warwickshire / Possible Ridley/Cotterill marriage in Birmingham
« on: Monday 09 August 10 01:04 BST (UK)  »
My great-grandmother's (Alice Ridley) birth certificate states that her father was Henry Ridley, a blacksmith, and her mother, Ann Ridley formerly Cotterill. Henry was Harry on Alice's marriage certificate.

Alice was born in 3 Court Branston Street, Birmingham in April 1872 but I have been unable to locate a marriage for her parents anywhere.

I see the family in 1871 before Alice was born. They are in Birmingham with three children:
1) Joseph (who is Joseph Henry) b. abt 1864 in Wednesbury, Staffs.
2) Mary A (b abt 1868 in ?, Staffs
3) Alfred (b abt 1870) in Derby, Staffs
Henry's age is difficult to read but it looks like 30 (b. abt 1841), born in Birmingham, Warwickshire. He is a blacksmith on the census too.
Ann was born in Dudley Worcestershire in abt 1842.

I thought Ann had died (although I haven't identified a death, and Henry may have remarried as I thought it may have been him in Hulme, Manchester in 1891 with a wife called Elizabeth and two young children, Jane and another Joseph. The occupation, age and place of birth fit. What is remarkable is there's a Joseph and Mary Ann Cotterill living next door but I haven't detected a connection to Ann.

This same family are in Christchurch, Ashton-under Lyne in 1901 without the Cottrells next door. The problem, though, is that Alice's marriage certificate states that her father is deceased. She married in All Saint's Birmingham in 1895.

I've been unable to trace further back without the marriage as Ridley is a bit too common a name and I also can't tie him up with a birth on FreeBMD. The two possibilities for Ann Cotterill born in Dudley are in 1838 and 1848, rather than 1842. Even if I plump for buying a few certificates, how would I know I have the right person?

I'm wondering if anybody has access to some parish records or something that's not easily available online or can point me in a new direction that may help me to find a marriage for Henry and Ann.

Family History Beginners Board / Surname puzzle on birth certificate
« on: Sunday 14 March 10 23:13 GMT (UK)  »
I have a bit of a puzzle I wonder if anyone can help me unravel. My husband's grandfather was called Cyril Norman ELLEN. On the 1881, 1891 and 1901 censuses, his parents were called William & Blanche ELLEN. Their marriage certifcate in 1880 also confirms their names as such (Blanche having previously been called Blanche BYDEN).

Now my husband's grandfather's birth certificate has Cyril Norman Ellen under the name section (ie. Ellen appears to be a middle name, not the surname). Also, the parents are called William & Blanche SMITH (and Blanche's maiden name is confirmed as BYDEN). Therefore it seems likely these are the same people. Cyril went through life using ELLEN as his surname but the Smith name was passed down as a middle name to his daughter, my husband's mother, and also to my husband's sister. My husband's mother is no longer alive to ask about the origins of the Smith name.

At one stage my husband thought his grandfather may have been 'adopted'. However, the birth certificate seems to indicate that the parents were the same as those on the censuses, etc. We have the original birth certificate issued in 1895, 20 days after the birth, which is signed by an 'interim registrar'. What is that? There is also a pencil note below the father's name saying 'see attached statement'. Needless to say there is no longer any attached statement although the document looks as though it had been pinned at one time.

Would the GRO have any copy of the said attached statement to explain the situation? We also have a copy birth certificate which was issued in 1946, when Cyril retired from the Royal Airforce. It has identical information as the original but no mention of any supplementary statement. Can anyone offer an explanation for the name discrepancy?

Devon Lookup Requests / William HELLIER - Tavistock marriage?
« on: Sunday 12 July 09 00:12 BST (UK)  »
My ggg-grandfather William Hellier (could be spelt Hellyer/Helyer/Helier, etc) was born in Tavistock in abt. 1816 and was married to Sarah (surname unknown). Sarah was also born in Tavistock in abt. 1811 according to census information.

I wonder if anyone could take a look for their marriage. Their first child, Jane Hellier, was born in Tavistock in abt 1840. Their first son's middle name was Gale and I am wondering whether this might have been Sarah's maiden name.

Also, any further information on William and Sarah, such as a baptism for them with parents' names would be great.

I am trying to locate a marriage between a Richard Fryer and an Ann Bailey Pitcher. Richard came from Arlingham and I have looked through the Arlingham registers without success.

Ann came from a farm between Uley and Coaley.

I believe Richard was a widower and that his first wife, also Ann, died in 1822. Richard Fryer and Ann Pitcher seem to have had their first child in about 1828.

If anyone can find this entry, I'd be grateful for the details and would also be interested to know if Richard was definitely a widower and who the witnesses might have been.

Many thanks.
Annie
