Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Bundle of found photos. Date by Fashion?
« on: Saturday 23 April 22 18:48 BST (UK)  »
Recently found some photos in a family recipe book. The original writer b1889, they may or may not be connected to her. (you may need to scroll if viewed on a phone or narrow screen to see photos on right)
The subjects are unknown and do not resemble known family members. Have speculated as to what they contain. Thoughts are that they are contemperaneous. Appear to be shot outdoors and printed on thin card, half postcard size ( all backs are blank save one which has "Post C.."(ard) on the back )
The girls appear to be in Sunday best ( could somebody date the fashion?) including some white shoes. We love the gloriously informal final picture where someone is enjoying a tasty treat. Something I have not often seen in older photos.
Any comments would be appreciated whilst we look at where to seek further information.

(We wonder whether perhaps they date to the opening of a church in 1912 ( or some church event thereafter ) - St Gabriel's in Ashton u Lyne, which was attended by the books owner.)

 Thank you.

England / Street Maps England from WWII 1938- German adapted.
« on: Monday 03 May 21 20:17 BST (UK)  »
(Apologies if you have already read this, it was suggested that I move it to a broader forum)

A while ago, whilst I was sourcing early 20th century maps of Sheffield on commercial online sites, I came across German military maps of Sheffield made in 1938-. They were based on OS, but printed with additional military information marking sites of strategic interest.
I  didn't have more than a passing interest in them at the time and didn't take note of which site they were on. I know NLS have a set online for Scotland, but these are 1" OS based. The ones I saw were larger scale (showing streets and buildings) with annotations for industries, factory types, infrastructure buildings &c. Does anyone know where I can find English sheets?

thanks in anticipation.

I am aware of earlier records held in the Archives at Preston, but does anyone know how or where to access records after 1855?

Thanks if you can answer this.

Hello helpful people.

I am looking again at a family I set to one side a while ago for want of better ideas and wonder if anyone out there has covered the same people or if anyone can give me some ideas to work with.

The main character is Thomas Fines. Irish, presumably with a strong accent, and illiterate, his name seems to be recorded with a great variety of spellings before seeming to settle at Fines. Born in Oldcastle, Co meath about 1830, he ends up in Westmorland by 1871, but it is his earlier history I am try to unpick.

Below I have listed details that I believe apply to him and his family that I have ( with help ) found so far. I am open to comments that might rule them out or cement them in, especially if someone has already researched them. Also any additional hints or links are of course welcome.

Arthur Fancourt Mitchell 1859-1936.

I am looking for his address of residence from 1901 to 1905.
He appears in the 1901 census at 55 Westbourne Rd and I think by 1905 he should have moved to the vicarage on Brocco Bank, but I would like to work out when he moved.

Arthur Fancourt Mitchell 1859-1936

Vicar of St Augustine's Sheffield.

I know that he originally lived on Westbourne Road and subsequently moved to the vicarage on Brocco Bank. I am trying to find out when he relocated.

Both addresses are close by and I think in the same registration district so searching the 1901 and 1911 census does not distinguish them (I don't have a subscription to see the actual address or household recorded, just the search result district Eccleshall Bierlow)
(I have now seen the census addresses and know the move occured between 1901 1nd 1911)

Does anyone have access to Crockford's directory around those dates, or other suggestions?
