The Common Room / help please
« on: Tuesday 24 August 10 21:16 BST (UK)  »
Hi All

Not sure the best place to post this so here goes.

I have a relative (gg aunt) who died in 1931 and on her death certificate her occupation is listed as weaver at cotton mill, what I wanted to ask is would there be any way of finding out which mill she was employed at.  At the time of her death she lived in Chorlton street, Openshaw, Manchester.

I know it's a bit of a longshot but any help would be gratefully received.

Thanks in advance
Jill

The Common Room / help please !!!!

Hi All

How can I confirm that a will I have which was proven in 1818 is for my relative?

The earliest I have gone back with one branch is Francis Peck who was married to Sarah Shillito on 23 November 1800 at St Georges, Doncaster. I have found a possible baptism for him on the igi on 6th august 1776 showing the fathers name to be francis also ( Francis is a name that followed down for at least 6 generations).

I got a copy of the will of francis peck of doncaster from the borthwick institute, this was proven in 1818. His executor is a Francis Peck which would tie in with my confirmed relative. Is there any way to prove that this is definately "one of mine" :) if so it gives a lot of names for his children and grandchildren.

Thanks in advance

Jill

Cheshire / help with parish records
« on: Tuesday 17 March 09 17:41 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Everyone

I was hoping for some advice on where to start with parish records, what is the best way to go about it?

I think most of the records I need to look at are held at Chester archives, I'm hoping to make a visit in the not to distant future but will only have one day to search as it's quite awkward for me to get there (a non driver with a toddler and one on the way).

Do I need to search for specific names one by one or can I do some kind of search on just one particular surname? I have only been researching since about november last year and I'm addicted already  :)

I have been a member of rootschat for a while and normaly log on at least once a day. I know there are some wonderful people on here who don't mind sharing tips on research and I would be extremley grateful for any advice offered.

Thanks in advance
Jill x
