Armed Forces / 31st Regiment of Foot
« on: Saturday 21 August 10 18:43 BST (UK)  »
Trying to find ancestors of my 3grt Grandfather Richard Cragg of Mobberley, Cheshire. I have Richard's discharge papers listing his service in the 31st Regiment of Foot - 1805 - 1810 which included the ill-fated action at Rosetta, Egypt where Richard suffered a gunshot wound.
After his discharge in Felixstowe (Landguard Fort) in 1814, Richard mysteriously surfaced in Unst, Shetland where he "married" a local girl Margaret Fordyce. After the birth of their first child they returned to Mobberley.
We know that the Fordyce's are intermarried with the Bruce's in Shetland and that The Lieutenant that saved the day for the 31st in Rosetta was a Lieutenant Bruce.
Could this be the connection that drew Richard to Unst?.
To follow this lead we need to find out more info on Lieutenant Bruce.
I would really appreciate any help and if someone could point me in the right direction to find this information
regards

Shetland / Cragg and Fordyce details - Unst
« on: Monday 16 August 10 16:06 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I am looking for information about my direct ancestor Richard Cragg, Richard married Margaret Fordyce in abt 1810 (location not known). Margaret was born in 1794 in Unst, Richard was born 1776 in Mobberley they had their first child George in Unst around 1811. They then moved back to Richards home town of Mobberley in Cheshire. Richard died around 1830 in Mobberley and Margaret abt 1877 in Mobberley. Information we have about Richard says that he was a pensioner of the Peninsular wars.

We have, despite our best research efforts (including the wonderful bayanne site), been unable to find Richards parents and are looking for clues anywhere we can. We were hoping that there may be information about Richard and Margaret's life in Unst, their wedding or the christening of son George or any other information in Unst that may point to his next of kin etc. or indeed how Richard found his way up to Unst.
Regards
Tony

I am looking for information on my grt grt grt Grandfather Richard Cragg of Mobberley Cheshire.
We have seen information that Richard was a pensioner of the Peninsular War. We are trying to find Richards parents and have rum out of options looking in all the usual places.

We know that Richard was born in Mobberley in 1776 and married in 1810 in Unst Shetland to a Margaret Fordyce. they had children there and moved back to Mobberley where Richard was employed as a gamekeeper.

He died about 1830 in Mobberley. We were hoping to get clues to his parents from his military records from the Peninsular War and how he arrived in Shetland.

Does anyone know where I can get information/service records for people who served during the Napoleanic war or Peninsular war to liberate Spain?
