Renfrewshire / John Ritchie born 1851/1852 ???
« on: Tuesday 12 April 11 00:00 BST (UK)  »
Hi
Following the paper trail from birth death marriage certificates and census.

I have a death cert of John Ritchie from New Zealand stating fathers name John Ritchie, mother Mary Brown Cambell, age 56 in 27.2.1908 born Glasgow, wife Isabella Paul. Informant son Daniel McQueen Ritchie.

I have found the marriage certificate of John Ritchie and Isabella Paul. 18.8.1877 Great Hamilton Street, Paisley, stating fathers name John Ritchie (dec) and mother Janet Cambell (dec), witnesses Isabella's brother and Minister of the North Parish. Groom John Ritchie age 25.

I have searched the Scottish BDM for five years either side of 1851 and 1852 with no luck. Plenty of John Ritchie's with a father John Ritchie but none with a mother matching either of the names.

Have been in the handwriting forum to check that I am reading the handwriting as best as possible. In the census the only time I can say for certain thats him is not until the 1881 census. In 1877 he was living at 4 love street paisley which was the home of the Paul family in 1871.

Anybody got any other ideas to climb this brick wall.
Thanks

Family History Beginners Board / Occupation Mariner- where to begin?
« on: Wednesday 10 February 10 23:24 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I have put off searching for a Mariner for many years, now I have another one. Where do I begin?

Archibald McPhail McGregor born about 1853/54 Scotland listed his occupation on his marriage certificate in 1884 as Mariner, father Robert occupation Brass Moulder. The marriage took place in London.
Later Archibald lists his occupation as Dock Labourer and Stevedore. He dies in 1896 in an accident at the Surrey Commercial Docks and there his occupation is Stevedore and Dock Labourer.
Have drawn a blank finding him before 1884. So thought I would try going down the Mariner path to  try and find him. But I just dont know where to begin.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Scotland / archibald mcphail mcgregor
« on: Monday 08 February 10 04:42 GMT (UK)  »
I have an Archibald McPhail McGregor born about 1853/54 Scotland. His marriage record in England states his father's name is Robert, fathers occupation Brass Moulder. Archibald's English death cert. also says Father Robert occupation Brass Moulder.

Have spent countless hours and money searching Scotland's people website, trying different spelling and time frame and parishes. Have found only two possibles.
One I followed through the census and that father Robert's occupation was always engine fender or engine keeper. The other one had a middle name of McIntyre.

So i checked the England births then Wales and Ireland, thinking that place of birth may have incorrect. Still nothing.

Anybody have any other ideas?

Looking for a death notice or inquest notice for Archibald McPhail McGregor. a Stevedore and Dock Labourer of Deptford. Died on the SS Daybreak whilst discharging timber.

Australia / Shaftesbury Hotel, Perth
« on: Thursday 28 February 08 03:33 GMT (UK)  »
If anyone is from Perth, does the Shaftesbury Hotel still exist? A Thomas Peter Aston listed this hotel as his residence in 1916.  Have been googling for hours and came up with a reference to it 1975, that it may have been in Stirling Street, and an early photo. Is it still there? Is or was it Stirling Street.
Thanks

Tipperary / Ballysheedy
« on: Friday 05 October 07 03:38 BST (UK)  »
I have a death cert. from Australia (Patrick Hogan) saying place of birth, Ballysheedy, Tipperary, Ireland. The gravestone also says, as does the gravestone of this person's  brother (Mathew Hogan). I have found one reference on the net to Ballysheedy, it states,

"Ballysheedy is one mile from Annacarty in the barony of Kilnamanagh, parish of Donohill."

Anyone know any more about this town/village?

Albert Pitt Hughes, death cert. states he was born Peoplteon, Worcester about 1843, father Frederick Pitt, mother Hannah Hughes.

Marriage cert states father Frederic Pitt

1851 census: Albert Pitt Hughes age 7 living with mother Hannah Hughes (widow)

1861 sensus: Albert Pitt Hughes age 17 living with mother Hannah Rose (widow)

Searching for a birth of Albert Pitt Hughes found an Albert Pitt chr. 1843 Peopleton, Worcester, father Freckerick Cadwallader Shillingford Pitt, mother Hannah Hughes. Also found a marriage for this Freckerick and Hannah in Worcester 1842.

Anyone have any ideas, Albert's death and marriage cert. both have his father as Frederic/k Pitt and mother Hannah Hughes, did she keep her maiden name?, why would his father's surname be his middle name? Have I gone round in circles and got myself lost?
