Dublin / Quinn's Cottages ....... COMPLETED
« on: Wednesday 16 June 10 01:39 BST (UK)  »
Just found a connection in Quinn's Cottages, Mountjoy, Dublin on 1911 Census. I've checked the 1904 Dublin Street Index and a few maps but no luck finding it yet.

It appears to be mainly tenements so occupants will most likely not be listed on directories, but can anyone locate the address and location?

Dublin / Where is Baldoyle, 1901

This seems like a silly question, but can someone tell me where to find Baldoyle on the 1901 Census?

I was pretty sure there was a Latin-English name translator link on here somewhere but a search didn't show any relevant results.

The name was transcribed from microfilm at the NLI.

Can anyone translate? I'm thinking William because of the similarity to Guillaume.

Ireland / Quick question
« on: Thursday 01 April 10 00:26 BST (UK)  »
I came across this phrase on an NLI microfilm "Denuntiationes Banna Dispensanta" on a marriage entry. I presume it's something to do with Banns. Anyone know the translation of this phrase? Also what, if any, are the implications?

Dublin / Loughstine, Howth
« on: Monday 29 March 10 16:14 BST (UK)  »
On a recent visit to the NLI, I came across an 1869 birth entry with the parents residence Loughstine, Howth. The microfilm wasn't one of their best and I spent quite a while on the placename as it was new to me, although I am reasonably familiar with Howth.

Has anyone any idea where Loughstine, Howth is?

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / COMPLETED - Baby Annie
« on: Sunday 14 March 10 03:13 GMT (UK)  »
This is my first post on this section and would appreciate any advice on how I should proceed.

My Aunt has the only known existing photograph of her sister Annie who was born in 1924 and died early in 1925, aged 15 months. The photo is mounted on a canvas backing and hung for many years on the wall. It is extremely faded and cracked but luckily, it was taken off the wall about 50 years ago and since then it has been stored flat in a strong cardboard folio.

I am not technically gifted but I made a scan of the picture and have saved it on this machine.

The file was scanned at 300dpi, I believe it is in bitmap format and the size of the file is 25 meg.

My questions are many....

Most importantly, can I post a 25 mg file on this site?

I'd really like to see what could be done digitally but should I be taking the original to somebody who could physically restore the picture?

All advice welcome and accepted.

Ireland / 1813 Census
« on: Friday 05 February 10 00:12 GMT (UK)  »
I came across a reference to a census of Ireland that was carried out in 1813. The census was apparantly not accurate.

http://www.ancestry.com/learn/library/article.aspx?article=660&cj=1&o_xid=0002135920&o_lid=0002135920

Does anyone know what became of this information?

The article, unless I have misread it, is not clear regarding its fate.

The site is searchable. It's amazing what you can find.
