Isle of Man / My aunts Maud Paul and Doris Wain(e) confectioners and caterers
« on: Sunday 11 June 17 12:48 BST (UK)  »
I have just had a bit in the IoM FH journal about their activities in Castletown and Port Erin. A lady has phoned me to say her mother was at one time with Maud Paul  so it occurs to me that there may be other  people who did confectionary  training who have  similar memories and maybe old photos.

I started this because last summer I was in the library in  Port Erin and found a booklet put out by the Examiner which had an article written by a 2nd. cousin in 1986  in which were laid out some memories of Doris Wain which had been told to my 2nd. cousin. They were mostly about Maud Pauls business in Port Erin.

All very interesting to me and I hope to others. I would like to hear from anyone who can add to this. Cheers Humphpaul

Help please. I have just joined  and want to get into member's  website. Can someone please tell me what user name to enter. I have tried my own name and my email. Also I have put in the password from the latest journal. Is the full stop at the end, part of the password or not?.

I am Alan Williams mem.no. 08/9506. Address removed by moderator

My main interest is graves of aunts and uncles who have died since 1950 upto about 1980. They are in Malew or Rushen or somewhere round there. I am coming over for two days in August.

Any help greatly appreciated. Humphpaul

Caernarvonshire / Conwy, 1910, 3 masted schooner, potatoes cargo.
« on: Thursday 10 March 16 16:13 GMT (UK)  »
A friends father lived in Conwy before 1914 and said  that as a youth he went to Ireland on a 3 masted schooner. The cargo was potatoes either to Ireland or from Ireland.
Does anyone have any info about such a cargo to or from Ireland at that time. It may have been a one off or a regular thing.
Also any info re 3 masted schooners trading in or out of Conwy around that time. Or info about other ports in North Wales where potatoes may have been carried.
Thanks for anything, Humphpaul

My relative Thomas Baylis was born around Maryport in Cumberland about 1780. But seems to have gone missing in the 1850/60s.

The family were interested in a notice which appeared in The Times in 1853 asking for next of kin for one of that name who died  about 29/12/1853 in Beaumont St, Stepney. Can someone tell me how to get a copy of that entry in The Times.
Thanks for reading this, Humphpaul

Cumberland / John Studholm, Marine store dealer in 1863. Born Parton near whitehaven
« on: Tuesday 25 August 15 18:44 BST (UK)  »
I  have just got a letter from Cascat about a request for next of kin of Thomas Baylis of Maryport. It was entered in The London Times of 1853 and the Baylis children were following it up.

The point is they asked John Studholm, who I think is the above one, for a contribution to a solicitors fee to trace the Thomas Baylis. From this I guess that there was money owed by TB to JohnStudholm.
so he had an interest in tracing him. As TB probably had interests in local ships, this makes sense.

I don't think anything came of the search but wondered if anyone has any info about Jn. Studholm.
Cheers, thanks for reading this. Humphpaul

Vessel was built at Dublin at "Ringrend" ?? and registered at Strangford and was then lying at Newry.

Has anyone any suggestions for finding info in Ireland about this.?

Lancashire / 1915 photo of troop exercises on promenade. "Blackpool"?
« on: Friday 15 May 15 16:26 BST (UK)  »
My family have a 1915 photo of my Mother's brother taken of him and some other soldiers doing bayonet drill on a seaside prom.

He was in the King's Liverpool Rifles who I think were  sent to a training unit at Blackpool.

Can you please have a look at the attachment to see if anyone can identify the place now.

Any help gratefully received. Cheers Humphpaul
