Armed Forces / Can anyone help - Sapper I A Wheal 1892
« on: Sunday 29 April 12 21:07 BST (UK)  »
Hi
This photo was sent to our Facebook group by someone that had been to Egypt on holiday as we're all ex-Sappers - would be great if we could find his records and then find his ancestors and give them a copy of this photo.
Can any of your experts help?

The "engraving" says (but it looks like he made a mistake on the H)

SAPPER
I. A. WHEAL
R.E. 1892

Any ideas anyone?
Cheers
Dave

Can any one help me identify what this ancestor of mine is wearing?  It'll be dated in the mid to late 1800's in Scotland.

Armed Forces / Muster Roll - 2nd Dragoon Guards - upto 1794
« on: Sunday 21 February 10 18:27 GMT (UK)  »
Please can someone help me?

I'm trying to find out if an ancestor of mine was enlisted in the 2nd Dragoon Guards upto 1794.

If he was, then how can I find his details, especially his date and place of birth?  I was hoping his details will be held on his regimental muster roll or other book.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Fife / Masonic Lodge in Cupar - 1790's to 1840's
« on: Sunday 05 April 09 11:49 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find information on a anscestor that was an active Freemason.  Samuel Payer enlisted in the Fife Fencibles in 1795 and went to Ireland because of the Irish Rebellion.  When the regiment was disbanded in 1803, Samuel Player became the inn-keeper for the Blue Bell Inn (the best inn in town, I've been told!)

The Fife Fencibles had strong ties with the Freemasons and were involved in setting up a Lodge in Londonderry/Derry.

Can the Masonic Lodge in Cupar share any info on Samuel?  Any info would be very welcomed, even if only his date and place of birth.

Derry (Londonderry) / Masonic Lodge in Derry
« on: Sunday 05 April 09 11:43 BST (UK)  »
I read an article that a significant Masonic Lodge was established in Derry in the late 1790's, with the support of other Mason's, including those in the Fife Fencibles, who were there because of the Irish Rebellion.

My anscestor, Samuel Player, was a Freemason and involved in setting up this Lodge.  His son Joseph was born there.

Will there be any information in this Lodge that can be shared?  Any info would be very welcomed, even if only his date and place of birth.

Hoping someone can help.

Armed Forces / 14th Regt of Foot - 1793 - William Player
« on: Saturday 04 April 09 11:48 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find information - mainly place of birth - of William Player, who enlisted in the 14th Regiment of Foot after a recruitment drive in 1793.

He died in the Flanders Campaign in 1795.

Can any one help me?

England / Samuel and/or William PLAYER - 1790's
« on: Monday 16 March 09 13:52 GMT (UK)  »
This first Player in Scotland seems to be a Samuel Player that came from England and ended up in Fife.  There are records of a William Player arriving to the area around the same time, but we're not sure if they are actually related.  William died in Flanders and Samuel went on to have a family - it seems all Players in Scotland are descendants of Samuel.

We've searched everywhere for Samuel's place of birth, to no avail.

Are there any Player family trees with a Samuel and/or William around this period.  They enlisted  around 1795 so, at a guess, they could've been born between 1770 - 1775-ish.

Armed Forces / Gen Champagne - 1790's
« on: Thursday 12 February 09 14:19 GMT (UK)  »
We're searching for details of a relative, Sgt Samuel Player, that served with the Fife Fencibles (1794 to 1803) but we can't find his place of birth (we believe he was English).  We have all the info Kew has on Sgt Player.

We've tried to find the regimental Description Book, but no joy yet.  Any ideas?

We've been informed that a Gen Champagne inspected the Fife Fencibles and took a detailed register of all the soldiers details.  Where could we search for this document?  We're hoping our relative's details will be here...

There are 2 Gen Champagnes, that were brother's (links below) and we're not sure which one it was, but it was more likely to be Lt Gen Forbes Champagne (then Brig Gen) who served in the Irish Rebellion in 1798 when the Fife Fencibles were there also.  However, looking at the dates of Gen Josiah Champagne, there's always the possibility that he did the inspection during his brief postings in the UK (he served overseas a lot, as the link below shows)...
