Nova Scotia Archives and Records
Nova Scotia Historical Newspapers On-line

Eighteen historic newspapers going back as far as 1769 were made available today. The site was launched today with 19,000 pages of digitized newspaper content available for public viewing. The newspapers are part of the collections from the archives in Halifax and the Beaton Institute in Cape Breton as well as from other libraries and private donations.

I am quite excited about this and look forward to reading all the pages over the next several months. I am hoping that other newspapers will eventually be added.

United States of America / Hanna's from Dysart, County Down to Brooklyn, New York
« on: Thursday 04 March 10 03:54 GMT (UK)  »
I have traced four sons of John Hanna and Martha McCullough, Dysart, County Down, Northern Ireland to Brooklyn, New York.

Joseph Hanna, before 1911
Abraham (Abram) Hanna, May 1911, age 25
Thomas Hanna, 1913, age 22
Alexander Hanna, 1922, age 27
They also had a brother named James who may have stayed in Northern Ireland.
An address is 1911 may have been 39 India, Greenpoint, Brooklyn.
In 1922 the adress of Joseph may have been 25 Fulton, Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

I have the records of their arrival in New York through Ellis Island and also information from the 1911 Census of Ireland. I am trying to prove that my great grandfather Abraham Hannah and their father John (Jack) Hanna were brothers. Any information on the above in the USA would be appreciated. I am really hoping that there may be a family tree for one of the above or that someone else may be researching the family and have information to share. Any info is appreciated.

Down / John Hanna and Martha McCullough
« on: Thursday 04 March 10 03:33 GMT (UK)  »
Many months ago I started a thread about my great grandparents Abraham Hannah and Margaret Dougherty and through the help of many people I have found what I believe to be relatives of the above. Through years of searching I have traced the Hanna's back to Desert/Dysart, County Down. I believe that my greatgreat grandparents, Abraham Hanna and Ellen Reid plus other Hanna's and Reid's were living in Desert in 1851 and earlier.

I am now looking for information on John (Jack) Hanna and Martha McCullough from Dysart, County Down. I have information on their marriage on June 17, 1879. which has his father as Abraham Hanna, farmer. The information that I found has them married in Downshire Presbyterian but the census has Martha as belonging to Ryan's Presbyterian. I also have some information from the 1911 Census of Ireland, residents of house #31 in Desert, Coobane, Down. I have traced four of their sons Joseph, Abraham, Thomas and Alexander to Brooklyn, New York, USA between the years 1910 and 1922. The fifth son, James, may have stayed in Ireland.

I am trying to prove that John (Jack) Hanna and my great grandfather Abraham were brothers. I also think that I may have found my great great grandfather's death on the family search pilot site. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to fill in the blanks. If I order Abraham's death certificate, what information will it give me. Any suggestions on how to proceed to prove the connection would be appreciated. Also, I would like to find descendants of any of their children who may also have information on the family.

Down / L. McAnulty
« on: Tuesday 05 May 09 02:17 BST (UK)  »
I have a copy of a letter dated March 17, 1921 from L. McAnulty, 1 Church St., Newry to her cousin, Nell McSephney, Springhill Mines, Nova Scotia, Canada. I am trying to find the forename and maiden name for L. McAnulty. I believe that her mother and my great grandmother Margaret Hannah nee Dougherty were sisters. I am also trying to find the full name of L. McAnulty's mother.
In a 1962 letter from Maureen McAnulty b. 1919 in Newry, she states that her grandmother (name unknown) died in 1921 and that her mother died 10 months later in 1922. Maureen also says that she had one brother, name unknown, b. 1917 and that he had 12 children born between 1945-1961. She also said that her father remarried and died in 1959. Her father's only sister Sarah died in 1961. Maureen's father may have lived at 70 Stream St. Newry. Does anyone know his first name.
If anyone can fill in some of the blanks, it would be greatly appreciated.

Down / Hanna's of Desert/Newry
« on: Thursday 05 February 09 01:37 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching the Hanna, Reid, Dougherty and Keenan families of the Desert/Newry area. My ggrandfather Abraham Hanna b. about 1860 and g grandmother Margaret Dougherty b. about 1861 were married in Scotland in 1880 and immigrated to Canada in 1904. I have traced the family back to the Desert/Newry area of Co. Down. Abraham's parents were Abraham Hanna b. about 1823 d. 1885 and Ellen Reid. Margaret's parents were Peter Dougherty and Catherine Keenan. I know that two of the Dougherty children, Elizabeth and Peter were born in Donaghmore, Co. Down about 1865 and 1868. They were farmers, miners and general laborers and continued the occupations in Scotland and Canada. Any information regarding the above families would be greatly appreciated.
