Suffolk Lookup Requests / Trimley St Mary burial - CADE
« on: Wednesday 22 January 20 02:29 GMT (UK)  »
The Church of England clergy database lists a Clovis or Thomas Cade as Rector at Trimley St Mary.  They state he died there in 1667.  I'm trying to find out if there is any record of this there.

Thanks!

Armed Forces / Peninsula Medal Roll
« on: Thursday 17 August 17 01:28 BST (UK)  »
Without a trip to England, I'm trying to figure out if an ancestor was in the army in an attempt to explain how a nice girl from Sicily ended up in Norfolk!  I have found a soldier that matches up in terms of name and age and dates.  However, he appears on the Peninsula Medal Roll for the 5th Regiment of Foot.  My ancestor died in 1825.  There aren't any other soldiers I've found with his name (Thomas Maw).

So, was the Roll those who were eligible for the medal or those that claimed it?  And if the latter, is there any evidence that it may have been claimed by relatives who shouldn't have?

Thanks,
Sarah

South Africa / Family of Reginald Key Hewitt
« on: Monday 24 August 15 23:12 BST (UK)  »
My gg-uncle Reginald was born in England in 1868 and died in Port Elizabeth in 1945.  After the death of his first wife Alice Frances Heald in 1897 he moved to South Africa with his two children Doris Kathleen and Reginald Charles (and his sister Kathleen later Mrs Tonks).  At some point he married and had another daughter Marion.
According to his official death notice, his daughter Doris was Mrs Geekie (we also have Geikie as a spelling), his son Reginald was a Major in the army and his younger daughter Marion was Mrs Martin.
I believe Doris had a daughter Valerie who married a Vincent De Villiers.

I've checked FamilySearch but not found any information of Reginald's second marriage or those of his children's.  A cousin from Alice's side has found death information for Reginald and his sister, but nothing more on the children.  Where else can we look?

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / "in Bethran"?
« on: Sunday 16 February 14 05:51 GMT (UK)  »
I've found the transcript of a marriage entry for an ancestor at St Martin Coney Street, York in 1744/45.  It reads:
Mark Robinson of this Parish and Anne Rose in Bethran, the 25 of February. Pub.

Anyone know what the "in Bethran" refers to?  Google is not solving this one ;)  Is it a typo for something else?  It comes up a few times in the York registers.

Thanks!

Immigrants & Emigrants - General / To China and Back - 1870's
« on: Saturday 16 March 13 03:34 GMT (UK)  »
My gg-grandfather Robert Johnston was a tailor in Shanghai for Sayle & Co from around 1872 to 1879.

How did he get there from Scotland?  And back to Ireland to get married in Oct 1881?

Interested in general information on routes, as well as specific information on where to find passengers lists.

Thanks!

Stirlingshire / Robert Johnston - birth - Falkirk
« on: Thursday 12 April 12 09:32 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I'm looking for the birth record of my gg-grandfather Robert Johnston, who according to both 1851 and 1861 censuses was born around 1844 in Falkirk.  His parents were John Johnston and Helen Young.

I've checked the IGI but only managed to find his elder sister.  His other siblings were born in Bo'ness and I've only managed to find one sister there in the IGI.

What other online sources should I check?

Thanks!
