London and Middlesex / Father Shown in Westminster Baptismal Record
« on: Saturday 23 July 16 08:45 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know if, in the early 1800s, it is likely that the father and his occupation would be shown in the baptismal record of his child born and baptised after he had died?
Thanks for any help.

Europe / Help Needed in Translating Old German
« on: Thursday 09 June 16 01:43 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
Is anyone able to help with translating the attached copies of death records from the 1770/1780s, please?
They are all taken from Ancestry - England & Wales, Non-Conformist and Non-Parochial Registers, 1567-1970 and are from the Parish records of St Marien German Lutheran Church, Savoy, Strand, London.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

Stirlingshire / Alexander McLean & Margaret Burden - Larbert
« on: Friday 06 May 16 13:15 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to identify the Alexander McLean & Margaret Burden who married in Larbert on 30 March 1792. Neither appear to have been born in Larbert.
I think there is a possibility that Margaret may have been the widow of Alexander Burden but do not have access to death or burial records for Larbert  to see if Alexander Burden died between January 1778 when he married Margaret Jameson (probably from Falkirk) and March 1792.
If anyone is able to help by looking up deaths/burials for Larbert it would be much appreciated as I am in Australia.
Thanks.

I am having great success in deciphering my father's service records (thanks to the NZDF "Commonly Used Abbreviations) but need some help with a couple of entries.

1. Does anyone know what the 'S' in 'S' NZ Infantry Corps means?

2. I know that the abbreviation M/O usually means "marched on" (as in departure from a unit) but I have come across a couple of instances where "marched on" doesn't seem relevant as it is preceded by "on" e.g. "CTBA to 2 NZ Rec Dep on M/O att. FAP to ..........".
(M/O is the only abbreviation I'm not sure of here). Could it possibly mean on military orders?
Thanks for any help.

Midlothian / 1871 Census Midlothian
« on: Sunday 20 April 14 07:52 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know if there are any parishes missing from the 1871 census for Midlothian?
I have never been able to find John & Eleanor Brabner and their children. They were in Edinburgh in 1861 (South Leith parish) and 1881(St Cuthbert's parish) and I have searched all of England & Scotland previously. I have used various ways of searching e.g. first names only but with no luck.
Thanks for any help

If anyone has access to 1951 newspaper records covering the Sleaford area would you be able to do a lookup for me please?
I am interested in the details of the death of Mary Ellen Weeber of Sleaford whose probate entry states she was last seen alive on 4 March 1951 and her dead body was found on 8 March 1951.
I am assuming that because of the wording of the probate record her death may have been reported in a newspaper soon after.
Thanks for any help.

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / West Riding Coroner's Reports 1935
« on: Tuesday 30 April 13 03:17 BST (UK)  »
Is anyone able to tell me if it is possible to obtain a copy of a Coroner's report for an inquest held in 1935 or if an article about it might have been published in one of the newspapers?
It was in relation to a sudden death, which turned out to have been from natural causes, of the caretaker of a workmen's hostel - New Inn Soyland.
I have a copy of the death certificate but am trying to prove that the caretaker was a Scotsman originally from Edinburgh and, although probably unlikely, am wondering if the report may contain any clues.
Also might there be any records of the hostel from that period?
Any help would be much appreciated.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / German Name
« on: Sunday 05 February 12 01:34 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
Is anyone able to decipher this name please? It is the signature of the groom, Charles Fagen, from an 1814 English parish marriage register entry.  I am guessing it is a German name as Charles married the daughter of a German residing in London.  Could it be something like Carl Fäugan?
Thanks for any help.
