World War Two / Womens Royal Naval Service 1945/1946
« on: Thursday 21 December 23 05:05 GMT (UK)  »
I have just seen a letter dated 16th May 1946 which states an address for a Chief Petty Officer - Wren
as being C/o "Novadel" Pier Road, Gillingham, Kent. I was wondering if anyone can tell me if Novadel was a barracks for Wren's attached to the Chatham Dockyard. The person in question was serving in Egypt at the end of the war and returned to England prior to discharge.
Thanks
David

England / English Marriage Registration 1864
« on: Monday 27 June 22 01:11 BST (UK)  »
I have a lady who married in Swainswick Somerset 02.09.1864. When she married she stated her surname to be Parker. Some time later no date given the Rector makes the notation on the bottom of the Marriage Register page
"The name 'Sloper' erroneously omitted at the time, has since been added at the ? postulation of the family & information has been sent at the same time to the Registrar General J Earle Rector."
The name Sloper has been added after Parker in the Marriage entry for both the Bride and her father. Though when register was signed both the bride and her sister(witness) signed using the Parker surname.
Civil Registration index is under the name Sloper so the Registrar General must have changed it.
I was wondering how common this was and what proof if any the family had to provide to support the name change.
The lady's father was variously known as George Sloper Parker, George Parker in the 1841 and 1851 census and then as George Parker Sloper in the 1861 census.
Sorry for the long post I was wondering if someone had any thoughts on a situation such as this. Would it be worthwhile to obtain the civil registration for the marriage in the hope that I may get additional information? As I am in New Zealand whilst I can order the certificate it will take some time to get here.
Thanks
David

Aberdeenshire / Lewis Davidson & Janet Walker m 23.05.1830 Udny, Aberdeenshire
« on: Thursday 18 February 21 09:00 GMT (UK)  »
I have an anomaly with the above couple who are one lot of my maternal great great grandparents and specifically Janet Walker. I am unable to find a birth record for Janet. All census documents from 1841 to 1881 state that she was born in Peterhead. Her death entry (DOD 23.07.1888) from Scotlands People state she died in Peterhead and was aged 91. Therefore Year of birth abt 1797. Birth years on the census ranged from 1806 in the 1841 census to 1796 in 1851 and in between for 1861;1871 and 1881. Also on her death record parents are stated to be Alexander Walker and Janet Thomson. Informant was Alexander Robb her Son In Law.
Janet had a sister Margaret Robb who I cannot locate a birth record for as well. Again said to be born in Peterhead. Her death record DOD 23.03.1866 states she was 72 (Born abt 1794) Parents Alexander Walker and Janet Thomson. Informant was Margaret's son Alexander Robb. Margaret had married John Robb in Peterhead in 1821. Alexander Robb a widower married his cousin Elisa Davidson (daughter of Janet) in 1881 and so is the informant in the death of his mother Margaret and Aunt (Mother in Law) Janet Walker.
Alexander Walker and Janet Thomson had 2 other children John b 1791 and Jane b 1793 both in Longside. (Alexander and Janet married in Longside in 1791 prior to the birth of John) I have their baptism records to confirm births. Lewis Davidson was also born in Longside. All Lewis's and Janet's children were born in Longside.
The anomaly is this. Why did Lewis and Janet get married in Udny (The marriage record for Lewis and Janet stated 'of this parish'), when all indications are that the Davidson's and the Walkers were in Longside / Peterhead? All online trees appear to have Alexander Walker and Janet Thomson as the parents of Janet and Margaret no doubt based on the information from their death entries on Scotlands People.
To add to the mystery there was a Janet b 1802 and Margaret b 1799 to James Walker and Jean Whyte (White) in Udny and a Janet b 1804 and Margaret b 1800 to George Walker & Janet Whyte (White) also in Udny.
I have had a look at Janet and Margaret born to James Walker and Jean Whyte and cannot seem to locate marriage or death records for them. I still have to look at Janet and Margaret born to George Walker and Janet Whyte.
At this stage just looking for anyone's thoughts and suggestions for further research and also of course perhaps I have overlooked something. Sorry for the length of this post
Thanks David

Hi
Have located my wife's family in both the 1901 and 1911 Irish census.

In both the 1901 and 1911 census household returns - head of family is Catherine Duffy. (My wife's grandmother). I am unable to locate my wife's grandfather Hugh Duffy in any of the household return forms. There are a number of Hugh Duffys in the census but they do not fit with either his age and or his county of birth. (Louth)
However on the House & Building return for both census he is listed as Landholder. At the 1901 census he would have been approx 42.
I was wondering if anyone had any ideas.
Thanks
David

Family History Beginners Board / Parish Burial Registers
« on: Wednesday 11 February 09 09:22 GMT (UK)  »
I am new to researching English records. My uncle a New Zealand World War 1 soldier died of wounds at Royal Victoria Hospital, Netley, Hampshire in 1919.

He is buried at St Mary the Virgin churchyard, Hound, Hampshire. The church registers are lodged at the Winchester Records Office.

It is something of a mystery as to why he is buried in the local cemetery rather than the military cemetery at Netley.

I have exhausted all avenues here in New Zealand as to why this should be and I am hoping the information provided in the burial register might provide some answers. Also the Commonwealth War Graves commission do not have any additional information other than what is on their website.

However before I write away for a copy of the entry in the burial register I was wondering if someone could tell me what sort of information is recorded in these registers.

Any assistance you may be able to give would be appreciated.

Thanks

David
