Family History Beginners Board / n4mv3t returns ;D
« on: Thursday 12 March 20 15:23 GMT (UK)  »
G'day everyone ... I haven't posted since 2014 due to serious health problems topped off by a quite debilitating stroke. That's the short story ... to expand a bit, I did not accept the medico's advice 12 months after the stroke that "this is as good as it gets" and have striven constantly to get back to my pre-stroke capabilities ... so my latest challenge is to continue building my family tree and return to rootschat.
I look forward to chasing down more of my family history
regards ... n4mv3t

Australia / Ellen Walsh aka Eleanor Loretta Walsh (married name Harris)
« on: Tuesday 03 February 15 15:52 GMT (UK)  »
G'day ... I hope someone may be able guide me in the right direction
Whilst researching the Walsh family (my partners forebears) I discovered that her grandfather and 2 of his brothers had served on the Western Front (1 being killed at Pozzieres). Off on the side of my research was an Ellen Walsh who was born in Narrabri New South Wales, a long way from my South Australian Walsh's so it took a while before I eventually decided to have a look at her. Her war service record and my further research reveals the following ...
she enlisted in the AANS 21st November 1914, aged 31
trade and calling - Nurse
she trained Perth Public Hospital (geesh!!, that's a long way from Narrabri ... how did that happen?)
she volunteered in 1914 and left for abroad in the first group of nurses and worked in hospitals and casualty clearing stations in Egypt, France and England as well as Lemnos (Lemnos being just across the water from Gallipoli and the first 'serious' major medical attention that seriously wounded soldiers would receive before being eventually evacuated to Malta)
she returned to Australia 18th February 1919
her army service record records her mother as I. ?. Walsh, 57 Young St., Parkside, South Australia (this address links her with my South Australian Walsh's, but what this link is, is evading me)
she resigned/demobilised from the military on 11th September 1919
her real name was Eleanor Loretta Walsh
sometime after she left the AANS in 1919 she married (perhaps in 1924) and her married name became Eleanor Loretta Harris (I have not been able to identify either her husband or children) however she had a daughter, miss T. Harris (as at 30th January 1968, a letter to Army records)
she died 8th December 1967 in New South Wales
on the 7th February 1968 it was decided by the authorities that she was not eligible for the special medal issued to Gallipoli Veterans
so, my question is what is the link that this Narrabri Walsh have with my South Australian Walsh's?
any help, assistance etc would be greatly appreciated ... thank you

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Garner puzzle - married twice?
« on: Friday 19 October 12 04:17 BST (UK)  »
G'day all ... I am researching the Garner family for my wonderful Lady ... her great, great grandfather arrived in Australia, with his young family, in 1857 and I have made excellent progress with the Aussie side of the tree however, on the English side I have a bit of a puzzle and would like some help/guidance on this to ensure I am not "going off track" ...

Hezekiah Langley GARNER is the greatx2 grand father who arrives in Oz in 1857
His father is John Langley Garner b. about 1796 and resident in Kirkburton

In the 1841 census John is 40 and his wife Nanny (Hallas) is 52 (and living at Slant Gate, Kirkburton)
and with them are Benjamin, 19, Hezekiah, 13 and James Hallas, 23 (wife's son)

In the 1851 census John is 50 and his wife Nanny (Hallas) is 60 (and living at Slant Gate, Kirkburton)
and with them are Benjamin, 29, Hezekiah, 23 and James Hallas, 32 (wife's son)

... and now this is where I reckon that Nanny has died and John has remarried ...

In the 1861 census John is 60 and his wife Hannah is 58 (and living at 116 Hill End, Kirkburton)
and with them are Benjamin, son, 38 and Harriet Leather, step-daughter, 18

In the 1871 census John is 71 and his wife Hannah is 69 (and living at 119 Hill End, Kirkburton)
and with them is George Leather, grandson, 5

The trees I have viewed on *A* seem to assume that Nanny's change of name to Hannah is a transcription error ... however I am now having difficulty locating a death record for Nanny and a marriage for John and Hannah so any help/guidance with this would be greatly appreciated

Moray (Elginshire) / McGregor (McGrigor) brickwall(s)
« on: Wednesday 03 October 12 03:51 BST (UK)  »
I have been researching my greatx2 grandfather, James McGregor (McGrigor)... my brickwall(s) are that I have been unsuccessful in finding his birth and his mother's name. Also as James seems to have been an "organised" man (he trains at least 4 apprentices) I had assumed he would have a headstone in a cemetery, but can't find that either.
His death details only show his father as John McGregor, Blacksmith (Master) (deceased) ... no mention of his mother.

All of my research has been through SP (I live in Australia)
... any help, suggestions etc would be greatly appreciated

His details are as follows ...

1841 Census shows
Jas McGrigor aged 35, Occ: Tailor, Parish: Gartly
Jane McGrigor aged 25,
Alex McGrigor aged 8,
John McGrigor aged 6,
Jas McGrigor aged 5,
Jane McGrigor aged 3,
William McGrigor aged 5 months

1851 Census shows
James McGrigor aged 47, married, Master Tailor employs 2 men, at Drumbulg, Gartly
Jane McGrigor aged 40, married, wife
Alexander McGrigor aged 18, unmarried, son, Tailor (apprentice)
Jane McGrigor aged 13, unmarried, daughter, employed at home
William McGrigor aged 10, son, scholar
George McGrigor aged 7, son, scholar
Francis McGrigor aged 4, son
Summary
As John and James McGrigor, (they would be aged 16 and 15) are not showing on the census I assume they are either deceased or working away from home

1861 Census shows
James McGregor aged 58, widower, Master Tailor employs 2 men, at Drumbulg, Gartly and was born in Glass
Jane McGregor aged 25, unmarried, daughter
William McGregor aged 20, unmarried, son, Tailor (Journeyman)
Peter McGregor aged 11, son, scholar
Ann McGregor aged 8, daughter, scholar
Elizabeth Clyne aged 39, unmarried, domestic servant, born in Glass
John Smith aged 14, servant, Tailor (apprentice), born in Huntly
Jane Robertson aged 84, mother-in-law, widow, born in Insch
Summary
So, Jane (the mother) has died sometime between 1853 (Ann’s birth) and 1858 (she is shown as deceased on George’s death record). George McGregor died on the 3rd May 1858 aged 14 years. Francis McGregor is away from home working on the “Cantloch” property (148 acres) of George Henderson at Auchindoir. Francis McGregor is 14 years old. However, Jane Robertson needed to be researched as the mother-in-laws surname should have been Adam. A search on SP revealed that her maiden surname was Robertson and that she was the widow of Alexander Adam and that her parents were George and Ann Robertson (m.s. of Ann Robertson was McDonald). Jane Robertson died on the 11th November 1864. Note – on Jane Robertson’s ‘death certificate’ James McGregor signs his surname as McGrigor (there is a very definite dot above the i in McGrigor)

1871 Census shows
James McGregor aged 67, widower, Master Tailor employs 2 men, and farms 9 acres arable, at Drumbulg, Gartly and was born in Glass
Alexander McGregor aged 14, Grandson, Tailor (apprentice), born in Banff
Ann Proctor aged 19, unmarried, domestic servant, born in Marnoch
Duncan Grant aged 18, unmarried, Tailor (Journeyman)

1881 Census shows
James McGregor aged 78, widower, Master Tailor, farms 8.5 acres arable, at Drumbulg Farmhouse, Gartly, and was born in Glass
Ann Proctor aged 29, unmarried, domestic servant, born in Marnoch

1891 Census shows
James McGregor aged 89, widower, Crofter, at Drumbulg Farmhouse, Gartly, and was born in Glass
Ann Proctor aged 38, unmarried, domestic servant, born in Marnoch

he dies on 24 Jan 1892

Armed Forces / Alexander RUSSELL - d. India 1902
« on: Sunday 17 April 11 13:02 BST (UK)  »
my gg uncle, Alexander RUSSELL b. 1879 in Mortlach, Scotland, died in Sialkot, India in 1902 ... some 'trees' state 5 Aug 1902.
The 1901 census records him as a soldier with the Gordon Highlanders in the Military Barracks, Aberdeen.
FamilySearch shows his death as 9th Aug 1902 in Sialkot, India and shows his rank as Private and that he was a soldier in the Gordon Highlanders.
However, I believe from my research, that the Gordon Highlanders were in South Africa in 1902+ ... so does anyone have any idea why he was recorded as a Gordon Highlander at the time of his death in India? (and did he die from disease, as many did, or from soldier stuff?) ... also is there any way I can expand my info on him; ie, his enlistment papers, service record, how he travelled to India, grave stone, memorial monument in India to the soldiers who died ... any help on this man in uniform will be greatly appreciated
