« on: Friday 17 April 09 15:07 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone give me any information on this regiment?

I believe they were stationed at Raglan Barracks, Stoke Damerel, Devonport during the 1871 census, does anyone know the whereabout of them before this dat and up to 1881?

Thank you for your help

Armed Forces / Barracks in Belfast 1844ish
« on: Wednesday 04 March 09 17:11 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I have received some discharge papers for 1844. They state that James Fox was discharged from 5th Regiment of Foot on 5th November 1844.

Does anyone know if I would be bale to somehow find out where in Belfast he would have been discharged from? also I know from the papers he enlisted in Dublin on 21 August 1823, again would this have been at a Barracks or just an office of some kind?

Thanks

Gem

Armed Forces / Which one? Any Advice would be great.

Hi

After searching the NA I am trying to work out which one of 3 likely Irish James Fox might be my GGG Granfather.

I know he was living in St Helier, Jersey with his wife and daughter in 1851 and his occupation states Chelsea Pensioner, so I went online to the NA.

Back came 3 possibles all from Ireland born abt 1806, I now need to try and work out which of them is likely to be the right one!!

They are:

James Fox born Dublin, served 4th Dragoons; 14th Dragoons. Discharged age 39 covering dates 1824 - 1846.

James Fox born Castledown, Delvin, Westmeath served 5th Foot Regiment discharged age 39 covering dates 1823 - 1844.

James Fox born Drumholm, Donegal served 64th Foot Regiment discharged age 36 covering dates 1825-1843.

I was hoping by finding out where these 3 were stationed I might be able to work out whether any of them are my GGG Grandfather.

I know that his wife was Irish and that in 1851 he had a 6 year old daughter Catherine also born abt 1845 in Ireland. working out the top James Fox who was in the 4th Dragoons he transferred to thr 14th on 30 sept 1841 and was not discharged till 1846 so I am ruling him out as a possible, would this be correct or would it still be possible that he might be my GGG Grandfather.

I know the easiest option would be to go to the NA at Kew, but I am a mother of 3 young children living in Sussex, dont drive.... the list goes on!!!

Any help would be great I just feel I am going round in circles trying to work it out

Gembaker - sorry for waffling on!

Armed Forces / Army Barracks in Devonport
« on: Tuesday 17 February 09 18:48 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I am new to the forum and hoping that someone might be able to help

I am trying to find information about an ancestor names John Rowland born abt 1844.

I know from his marriage certificate in February 1871 that his occupation was a soldier, and on the 1871 census he was living at 5 Tamar Wharf, Devonport with his Wife Catherine his occupation again says Soldier (no regiment etc given).

Does anyone happen to know how I would find out what regiments were based at an army barracks in 1871

Also what barracks were in Devonport at that time, I know that it was a naval port but was there also Army there aswell??

I know that by 1881 he was living in Newington, Surrey and his occupation was a labourer..

I did try searching for him on the NA site, and only cam across one John Rowland born 1845 (so the date of birth is a possible match) but he was a Royal Marine Light Infantry Plymouth Division covering dates 1856-1872.

Is there any chance this could be my John Rowland or would the occupation not say Soldier but Marine/Navy etc?!?! Long shot I know but I have been trying to find something for a while and think I am now grasping at straws.

Any help on this would be great
