Oxfordshire / Ancestor born in a barn near Chinnor 1717
« on: Tuesday 27 December 22 23:36 GMT (UK)  »
I am tracing a possible ancestor named Elizabeth Doyley, who married Samuel Ginger at Chinnor in 1734 (both say they were of that parish but married by licence. My Samuel was from Stone in Bucks.). I have narrowed a birth for her down to an Elizabeth Dowley, baptised 7 April 1717 at Chinnor. Written in Latin, I have translated it as: "Elizabeth daughter of Thomas Dowley of Woolwich in the county of Kent born in a barn of Richard King (senior?) of Hinton."

I can't find anyone by the name of Dowley in the region but a lot of families named Doyley in Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire. I can't find anyone in Kent or London that is a match with Thomas but I have very little to go on. On Elizabeth's marriage she is recorded as Doyley. I may have the wrong person, however, I am curious as to why she was born in Richard King's barn! I have access to Ancestry and have looked through the Oxon PRs but I'm not sure if I'm on track.

Any advice or assistance will be gratefully received. Thank you  :)

Buckinghamshire / Drayton Beauchamp parish records
« on: Monday 26 December 22 22:22 GMT (UK)  »
I have been searching for years, in vain, for the family of Sarah Mead, who was born circa 1775 at Drayton Beauchamp, as appears consistently in census records as her birthplace. I think she may fit with the family of Edmund and Elizabeth Mead, who had two children baptised in Drayton in 1772 and 1783. They had a daughter Sarah baptised in 1779 at Buckland, a short distance from Drayton. One son, Michael, later lived in Aylesbury, where Sarah settled with her husband, so I think I am on the right path. Elizabeth Mead died in 1801 and was buried at Drayton. I have only managed to find the baptisms of the three children through Find My Past indexes, as records don't exist anywhere else. I am willing to subscribe to anything which has Buckinghamshire parish registers but none of the internet resources include Drayton. My only option appears to be a research service through the Buckinghamshire Record Office, which is very expensive per look-up, and I don't have dates for anyone aside from these baptisms. I'm not sure where Edmund and Elizabeth originated, which makes it hard to put together the missing pieces of this family.

Any advice or assistance to find information without spending a fortune would be most welcome!

Somerset Completed Lookup Requests / Wincanton Bishops Transcripts
« on: Sunday 02 January 22 00:41 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

Would anyone have access to the BT's for this parish before 1636 (when the PR's begin)?

I am stuck with working out family relationships and need to look back further. Online information tells me the BT's begin 1593 (with gaps).

My family is Day and I'm looking for any mention of them, particularly Edward.

Thank you,

Kells.

Dorset Completed Look up Requests / West Chelborough Registers - COMPLETE
« on: Sunday 26 December 21 01:44 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I am a subscriber to Ancestry and while their Dorset parish collection is very good, there are no registers for West Chelborough!

I understand these are available at the Dorset County Record Office on microfilm, and begin about 1662. As the fee for their research service is so high, I wondered if anyone had access to them?

I am searching for all mentions of the surname Wellman and its variants from 1662 to 1712.

Can anyone help?

Kent / French ancestor in Brenchley
« on: Saturday 24 July 21 06:23 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I am wondering if there are any records in Kent that could be consulted to trace the origins, and potential arrival in England, of John Diamond (also spelled Dimonde, Demont). He died in Brenchley in 1638, the parish register including the annotation "A Frenchman from whom all the Diamonds came".

He had three known children, sons John, Matthew (alias Matthias, born about 1608) and Jasper (born about 1616). There is no record of a wife or other children. I suspect the original name in French may have been Dumont.

I am not certain he would have been a Huguenot, and he does not come up in any Huguenot record sets I have been able to access online.

I have also tried looking for the name and its variants in the Kent Archives catalogue. Find My Past and Ancestry have been of no use. I joined Geneanet but am not a paid subscriber, as I am unsure if I will find any clues there. I don't know where John came from.

Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Worcestershire / Dudley marriage licence
« on: Friday 31 January 20 03:44 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I have a marriage in 1767 at Dudley St Thomas, by licence, between Benjamin Lakin of Tamworth and Mary Green of Dudley.

Where can I find records of the diocese for marriage licences of this period? I am hoping to gain more information about the wife in this instance, as she is so far untraceable.

Many thanks  :)

Cheshire / Bosley Parish Registers
« on: Monday 13 January 20 10:07 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

Find My Past have copies of the Bosley registers but there are many gaps, including right at the time my ancestor would have been born (1700-1718). I can place my family there from other records.

Is anyone familiar with Bosley, and knows if there are missing parts to the records, or if they can be found elsewhere?

Thanks.

Derbyshire / Beeley marriages
« on: Sunday 03 February 19 00:14 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

If anyone has access to the registers for Beeley, I would be most grateful if someone could please provide a full transcription of a marriage from 1743. Find My Past has the index entry only, and Ancestry does not cover it. I am hoping there is more information to be found:

Benjamin Stephenson married Mary Boom (or Boond) 17 April 1743.

Many thanks.

Devon / William Lee alias Dyer and Maria Pulman
« on: Thursday 17 August 17 22:52 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I am searching for the ancestry of my husband's direct paternal ancestor, a tailor named William Dyer. William was christened William Dyer Lee in Bath 2 June 1811 to William Lee and Maria Pulman. Sometime afterwards the whole family dropped the surname Lee and were known as Dyer (except for one daughter). This has been confirmed but raises other questions.

William and Maria married in Stoke Damerel on 29 May 1798. They had a son James Pulman Lee baptised here in 1800 (who later, as James Dyer, gives his birthplace as Stonehouse in the census). Then I found them in Liskeard in Cornwall, where two daughters, Jane and Mary, were born in 1803 and 1805. William Lee, then a tailor of Liskeard, was convicted for stealing beef in 1805. This may have driven the move to Bath.

I know William Lee (Dyer) senior died in Bath in 1848 aged 73 which puts his birthdate at approximately 1775. I have successfully traced Maria's lineage in Cornwall, but can't find a match to him in either county, though I suspect he has origins in Devon.

Given the name change, would you suspect he was illegitimately born? I have searched Devon records on FindMyPast but nothing really stands out. I have checked DNA matches on Gedmatch with the surname Lee in Devon several of which do match with my husband, the highest at 29cM. We joined a Dyer surname project but his DNA doesn't match anyone there. He'd really like to know the true paternal lineage, Dyer or Lee!

Thanks in advance, any help much appreciated.
