World War Two / WW2 National/Auxiliary Fire Service records
« on: Friday 08 March 24 15:47 GMT (UK)  »
Afternoon all,

I'm looking for some assistance on where I can find my Grandads Auxiliary Fire Service Record.

He served in the Castleford/Pontefract/Garforth areas of West Yorkshire during the early stages of the war until he was injured in the Xmas raid on Salford after being drafted in to assist in fire fighting at the docks.

From there he went on to serve in the fire service at the Royal Ordnance Factory Filling Station No9 at Thorp Arch where he eventually became Station Officer.

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards

Dave

Armed Forces / Samuel Sneyd Which Regiment
« on: Wednesday 02 August 23 19:39 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

I'm trying in vain to find out which regiment my 5x Great Grandfather Samuel Sneyd (Snead/Sneed) served in during the wars in Canada.

I have his Chelsea Pensioner record stating that he was wounded in the wars in Canada sometime between 1771 and 1783 prior to being admitted into the "Royal Garrison Battalion" in Chester.

He was born around 1754-1756 in Audley in Staffordshire.

Any help would be appreciated.

World War One / Help with Cap Badge
« on: Thursday 29 July 21 19:38 BST (UK)  »
Hello All,

I'm trying to identify this cap badge for John Fairclough Houghton, Can't find any MRC's or Service Records under that name. He was from Wigan born around 1878 so, around 36-38 when he enlisted.
The picture was most probably taken in 1915-1916 by the age of the children.

World War One / Pte Joseph Death
« on: Wednesday 10 February 21 19:20 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder if anybody out there can help me, I'm trying to trace the war service of my Great Grand Uncle Pte Joseph Death born 1872 in Ipswich.

He has quite a long career in the Army starting in 1893 when he joins 3rd Bttn Suffolk Regiment (#3069), In 1900 he is transferred to 2nd Bttn Manchester Regiment and sent to South Africa with a little time inside for being a naughty boy! He returns in 1902 with the QSA and KSA. He then leaves the Army in 1903 for life on civvy street as a Hawker in Ipswich, gets bored and re-enlists in the Suffolk RGA in 1904.

From this point I lose him altogether however, I've found an MRC for a Sapper Joseph Death who was in the RE (#122891) and then the Labour Corps (#294463). The reason I've focussed on this is that, on his attestation papers for the Suffolk RGA somebody has written at the top RE in red.

Could he have transferred to the RE being that he would have been 38 at the outbreak of the war? Or, am I clutching at straws here?

Any help would be appreciated.

World War Two / WW2 Bomb Damage Map Request
« on: Tuesday 13 October 20 00:50 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

Being cheeky! Does anybody have access to the Bomb Damage Maps for London?

I'm after one in particular that shows Redwald Road and Pedro Street in Clapton Park. I know there were 3 x 500kg bombs that exploded in that vicinity but would like to know if my G Grandparents house was damaged? There's nobody left that I can ask now and it would be interesting to know.

Thanks Dave

Staffordshire / Samuel Hawthorn/e
« on: Tuesday 07 March 17 20:06 GMT (UK)  »
This is a plea for help that I put up in 2015, I've periodically searched various websites over the past couple of years but to no avail.

I'm wondering if somebody out there can help me, I'm looking for the parents of a Samuel Hawthorn(e) born around 1786 in the Stoke/Wolstanton/Tunstall/Burslem area.

I've had a look at the usual suspects but they don't give any parents names just an approximate birth date of 1786 +/- 5 yrs! (1783 on death cert and 1786 on 1841 census).

He passed away in 1845 so I only have 1 census return for him which he gives his year of birth as 1786, I've trawled through all the census records for his wife and children but no Grandparents are mentioned as living with them. His wedding certificate to Theodosia Sneyd/Sneayd in 1804 mentions a John Hawthorne as a witness but I'm not sure what relation he could be Father, Brother or a Cousin?

Even the children's names don't seem to help:

William
Enoch
Edward
Henry
Samuel
Ebenezer

Any help would be appreciated.

Many Thanks

David

Travelling People / Death/De'ath/Deathe Family
« on: Wednesday 15 February 17 19:42 GMT (UK)  »
Can anybody out there help me???

I've hit another brick wall with my Fathers side of the family, My GG Grandfather was Joseph Death born 1847 in Norwich. His parents were Charles Death a boot and shoe maker/repairer and Dianah/Diane/Diana/Dinah/Ann Smith!

They had as far as I can gather 7 children between 1830 and 1847 (Elizabeth, Thomas, Rachael, Naomi, Sophia, Lazarus and Joseph) all born/baptised in different locations in Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire. The only Birth Certificate I can find for any of them is for Lazarus which gave me most of the information on Charles that I have. The majority of the Baptisms that I found seem to confirm Charles's occupation.

Charles is a mystery, the only possible candidate I can find with that name and occupation died in Cheveley, Cambridgeshire in 1846 with none of the above mentioned on the certificate. Dianah doesn't fair any better, she was born in that well known place of NK maybe Oxfordshire??! in around 1796 give or take 10 years and died in Cambridge in 1879.

As for Census records Charles doesn't appear in any and Dianah in 1851 to 1871 described as either a Traveller, Hawker or Widow.

I've trawled the majority of the available online records for Charles and Dianah Smith in all these locations but drawn a blank regarding their births and marriage.

Is there anywhere else that I could try to get their birth and marriage information?

Thanks in anticipation.

David
