Occupation Interests / How many types of mason?
« on: Saturday 23 July 11 16:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi all
I have a marriage cert which states groom's father, John Davies (deceased) occupation mason. Is this the same as stonemason or are there other types? I can find no birth, marriage or death for this John Davies & thought maybe his occupation would help me trace him.
Thanks

Scotland / Why can't I find them on SP?
« on: Saturday 23 July 11 16:32 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for advice (again) on Henry Davis/Davies & his parents, John Davies & Elizabeth McWhinnie formerly Davies ms Chorley. On 1901 Glasgow census, he is listed as Harris Davis born in England. I'm pretty sure that he is Henry as the main occupier, George Vallance, at the address was witness at Henry's marriage to Mary McTear in 1901. Also, 1911 census has him born in England. I can find no record of his birth or his parent's marriage although on IGI there is a submitted entry which has them married in Hutchesontown about 1877. Also, states Elizabeth McWhinnie Chorley born there about 1862. I did ask on the England forum but no-one can find them married in England so far. I have searched on SP & can't find any records for them at all. Elizabeth obviously remarried a Mr McWhinnie, it's not her middle name. John Davies was deceased by 1901. Sorry to be so long winded but it's such a mixup. Does anyone have any suggestions please?

England / Born in England - but where?
« on: Thursday 21 July 11 23:13 BST (UK)  »
Hi all
I'm looking for guidance please. I have a Henry Davis/Davies in Scotland & in both 1901 & 1911 census's it states place of birth as England. He signs his name Henry on his children's birth certs but on one census, he is down as Harris, so he may have been known as Harry. I have copy of his marriage cert from 1901 when he was 21. His parents were John Davies (dec) & Elizabeth McWhinnie, formerly Davies ms Chorley. I have no experience at all of English records & have no idea how to look for them. I've tried Ancestry & IGI but as I have no idea of county, it's proving impossible. Can anyone explain (simply please) how to go about looking for his birth, parents marriage & births?

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Help with occupations please - Completed
« on: Saturday 16 July 11 22:47 BST (UK)  »
I'm hoping that someone can tell me what the occupations of the two fathers on this cert are, esp John Davies. The only info I have on him is, his son Henry was born in England. I got that from 1901/11 Scottish census forms. I've been trying for months now to find them & it might be easier if I at least had an occupation. I can't find them in SP records so assume that they are both English.
Any help will be gratefully received

Stirlingshire / Gillespie family buried in Slamannan
« on: Thursday 26 March 09 00:04 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone tell me how to find out how many of my family are buried in Slamannan cemetary? I know that my GGFather, William Browm Gillespie and his wife Jane are there. He died in 1923. Also, my father remembers attending funerals there in the past 40 years but what about before 1923. Would there be records for people who didn't have headstones? His father was Alexander, mother Helen but I don't know about any siblings etc. 1871 census shows a William living with his brother James in Slamannan but I don't know if this is the same William. I will be visiting Scotland in July and intend to visit the area then.
Any help would be appreciated.

Ayrshire / Rev Douglas Fraser - Kilmaurs
« on: Sunday 22 March 09 22:05 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, Can anyone remember a minister at Kilmaurs in 1950's, Rev Douglas Fraser? I think he went there after being in Glasgow, maybe Kelvinside area. His name has cropped up as being a cousin? of my father in law. My husband vaguely remembers visiting him while still school age and he left school in 1954.
I can't find anywhere to look up past serving clergy in Church of Scotland. If anyone can help with that, I'd be grateful.

Occupation Interests / Barrackman
« on: Sunday 01 March 09 19:24 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone tell me what this occupation is please? It is on a marriage certificate dated 1819 from Argyll, Scotland. Could it be anything to do with military?
Thanks
Anne

OOPS! :-[ sorry, I've just realised that this is actually place of residence and not occupation.
