Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / What do you make of "zitt wast"?
« on: Monday 28 March 22 11:02 BST (UK)  »
In the Hearth Tax records for Dunbartonshire on ScotlandsPlaces (E69/7/1/10) the transcription of the highlighted line is "given ovir as zitt wast". Any help with this phrase would be appreciated.

Lanarkshire / Can anyone identify the vehicle?
« on: Tuesday 23 February 21 14:37 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to date this photo from the vehicle in order to pin down who the subjects might be.  It came with photos belonging to my grandmother so they may be family connections.

This photo was among my late aunt's family photos. It was probably taken in Lanarkshire.  The image measures 1x1.25 inches and the mount measures 2.4x2.8 inches.
I would be grateful for help with restoration and a possible date when it was taken in order to decide if it might be my grandfather as a boy.  I need help with the uniform too but perhaps I should enquire elsewhere about that?

Scotland / Tangus Campbell
« on: Sunday 11 September 16 16:35 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone can shed light on the unusual forename Tangus for me.  I am interested in Tangus Campbell who married Anne Mcilrie ( later births to Ann, Agnes/Mclearie, Mcleary, Mckenzie) in Torryburn, Fife in 1762.  I have found three births to the couple in Inverkeithing, Fife from 1764 to 1768 and seven in Bo’ness, West Lothian from 1770 to 1784.  In 1785 Tangus Campbell received “Supplies” from Bo’ness Kirk Session and in 1786 there were “Supplies” to Tangus Campbell’s widow.  There are supplies after 1786 to both Ann Campbell and Widow Campbell.
Anne McClearie is a mystery too.
Would I be right in thinking that as I have not found a claim from Bo’ness on another parish in the Kirk session minutes that Tangus and Ann were born in Bo’ness?
ScotlandsPeople has an Abigail Tangus in Petty, Inverness, married to David Calder, with births from 1804 to 1811 but I cannot see any connection.
Any insight would be gratefully received.

Lanarkshire / Prudhoe, Lanarkshire
« on: Friday 25 April 14 20:13 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help me with Prudhoe? It is the birthplace of Agnes Lumsden (nee Allan, born about 1817) on the 1871 census.  In 1851 her birthplace was Bothwell, in 1861 Newarthill, so I reckon it's near Newarthill.  I can't spot anything on NLS maps that it might be.  Google brings up Newcastle upon Tyne.  Her father was a miner.  I'm working from home with Ancestry but eventually can look at the original image in Edinburgh.  Just wondered if anyone had any ideas meantime.  Impatient me!

Scotland / Look up on passenger lists please?
« on: Sunday 11 August 13 12:22 BST (UK)  »
There is a record for a family member on a passenger list which led me to look for another record but I do not have access at present.  I would be most grateful if someone could have a look for me.
This is part of the record I have access to

New South Wales, Australia, Assisted Immigrant Passenger Lists, 1828-1896
Name: John Lumsden
Birth Year: abt 1820
Age: 38
Arrival Date: 25 Jun 1858

I can view the image for this and John says he has a cousin James standby in Sydney.
I think this is the listing for a cousin James which, tantalisingly, I cannot view  -

New South Wales, Australia, Unassisted Immigrant Passenger Lists, 1826-1922 PASSENGER LISTS
NAME:  James Lumsden
BIRTH:  year
ORIGIN:  location
DEPARTURE: location
ARRIVAL: date - Sydney, New South Wales

John is John Flockhart Lumsden, born 27 Jul 1819 to Alexander Lumsden and Agnes Flucker/Flockhart in Duddingston, Midlothian.  I think the cousin he refers to might be James Lumsden, born 2 May 1829 in Old Monkland, Lanarkshire ro Josiah/Joseph Lumsden and Jane/Jean Sneddon.

Thank you if you take the time to help me with this.

West Lothian (Linlithgowshire) / Lair records for Bo'ness and Carriden
« on: Thursday 27 June 13 19:45 BST (UK)  »
I'd be grateful if someone could tell me where I can see lair records for Bo'ness and Carriden graveyards.  Is there a CD?  Is there information available in Falkirk or Linlithgow?  I have seen a transcription of an MI for Carriden for Robert Lumsden, Richard Lumsden, Richard Snadon their spouses and families.  The date is 1803.
I think Robert and Richard may be the sons of Daniel Lumsden/Lumsdale and Violet Brown.  Richard Snadon may be the brother of Richard Lumsden's wife Catharine Snaddon?
I'd like to know who else is buried there.  In the next plot is Mary Lumsden, first wife of John Gibb.  I think she is the daughter of Richard Lumsden.
My ancestor, Alexander Lumsden/Lumsdale could be the brother of Robert and Richard.  If so, he would be born to Daniel and Violet in 1754.  I have my ancestor's marriage and children but cannot get further back.  My ancestor had no children called Daniel or Violet, but then neither does Richard.  I do know though that members of the families of Robert, Richard and Alexander moved to Lanarkshire and seem to be connected.
I've spent years trying to find the parents of Alexander.  I hope someone can help even if it is negative information.

The above link  is something experienced researchers of early Bo’ness names may know about but I’m mentioning it to help others who may not have been researching too long and who may not have come across it yet.  I just found it at the weekend when I put Tasker Bo’ness into Google.  I had found the name Tasker connected to my research interest, Lumsdens/Lumsdales in Bo’ness/Carriden and Lanarkshire.

On the website I found births, marriages and a list of member’s names for the Scots Kirk in Rotterdam, many of them connected to Bo’ness.  On one page I found “Borrowstownness” mentioned 24 times.  Lots of well known Bo’ness names are there, like Brown, Cowie, Gibb, Grant etc., even a few Lumsdens/lLumsdales.   I haven’t come across any Sneddons though.

If you are researching James Watchman and Marjorie Hardie for example, you may have found 5 births/baptisms on the Family Search website for the couple in Bo’ness:

Agnes 1693
Alexander 1695
Elizabeth 1697
Thomas 1700
Jean 1703

But there were earlier baptisms in Rotterdam:

Catharin Watchman 14 Nov 1683
James  Watchman  8 Jul1685

If you are researching Lumsdens/Lumsdales in Bo’ness and Carriden I’d be happy to exchange information.
