Northumberland / The Coulson Family from Northumberland
« on: Monday 30 March 20 02:49 BST (UK)  »
Hello all!

I am trying to locate the parents and siblings of an ancestor who immigrated from Northumberland England to Canada.

Information I have:

his name is William Coulson b. approx 1800
he has at least 2 brothers Edward (the eldest) and John
His father, unknown first name, was a wealthy land owner in Northumberland and apparently a man of influence. He owned land within 10 miles of the boarder of Scotland. This land was then left to Edward Coulson his eldest son. Edward then amassed his own wealth. all 3 sons Edward, John and William were mentioned to have received excellent educations.

This info comes from a book published in 1905 about the families of early settlers and contributors to small towns in Ontario, Canada where William settled and grew his own family and reputation.

I have tried to use the england census records to narrow my search as well as baptism records, however to no real success. Wondering how I would go about solving this mystery...one would think it is possible since the family was supposedly well off in the early 1800s. What land records would I search?

will take any suggestions! hope everyone is staying healthy!

thank you! Torrie

Canada / Pierre Villeneuve and Sophie Villeneuve-looking for first nations connections
« on: Tuesday 31 December 19 16:46 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there and happy new years eve!

I have been researching my husbands family tree. He was told by his mother and maternal grandmother that they descend from native ancestry. Going back many generations I have found the family to be of french back ground and have been living in and around the ontario/quebec border and st lawrence river area for many many generations. I have yet to find any evidence of a first nations/metis connection.

looking for suggestions on how to find this connection. A person on ancestry has Pierre Francois Villeneuve (1816-1871) and his wife Sophie Villeneuve (1828-1885) listed in their tree with a photo of a metis flag but no other explanation. I have reached out to them with no response yet.

Pierre Villeneuve born in rigaud quebec parents are Vincent Xavier Villeneuve of Vaudreuil Quebec and Maire Ann Quesnel of oka, Quebec

Sophie Villeneuve born in Vaudreuil quebec

I noted the 1861 Canadian Census has a place to note whether you are of "Indian, colored or muslim" decent and thus far none of his family have checked that box

hoping to find suggestions on how to find first nation connections to this family and other relations of husband.

thank you for your time, Torrie

Armagh / Who is Sarah Donnelly?
« on: Tuesday 12 July 16 05:38 BST (UK)  »
Hello!

Looking for a little direction.

I have found my g-g-g grandfathers will on PRONI.

"The Will of John Odgers late of Annagola County Monaghan Coachman who died 18 March 1892 at same place was proved at Armagh by the Reverend Edward Allen Foy of Middletown"

In the will he lists 2 sons ....John and Joseph Odgers, 2 daughters, Louisa goodfellows and Eliza Simpson. I have traced the history of each of his children.

However he also lists a SARAH DONNELLY as a granddaughter. I cannot find any information on this girl. Nor any connection of a Donnelly family to the Odgers. I do know John had a third daughter Isabella Margaret Odgers however she died before her parents at 21 years of tb l believe. I cannot find a birth certificate or any clues for Sarah. I cannot narrow down all the Sarah donnellys in the 1921 census either.

All I know is Sarah Donnelly was born before 1891 and the Odgers family lived in Middletown/tynan Armagh and in Annagola Monaghan (all same general area)

Any suggestions on how to move forward would be great!!

Argyllshire / 1851 Census Mystery-Donald Cameron
« on: Tuesday 15 March 16 21:30 GMT (UK)  »
Hoping someone will have better luck with I, coming up with a solution to this one. WHO IS DONALD CAMERON?

1851 census
Allan Livingston   55-head
Janet Livingston   52-wife
Mary Livingston   18-daughter
Duncan Livingston 16-son
John Livingston   13-son
Ann Livingston   8-son
Donald Cameron   2-GRANDSON

This family lived in Morvern Argyl Scotland in the 1841/1851 census. Allan and Janet had 7 children. patrick (1828) and Catherine (1829) are not listed on the 1851 i posted above as they were old enough to have moved on.

I know Catherine married James currie in 1872 and previous to that lived with her father as a livingstone in the 1861 census.

Mary married Charles Mclean in 1858 and is also listed above on the 1851 census as a livingstone.

Ann the only other daughter to Allan and Janet is only 8 in the 1851 census above.

So my problem...who is Donald Cameron (2) ...he is listed as a grandson to Allan and Janet however I do not see a way this can be possible. I have looked up birth records for Donald and no connection stands out.

any suggestions would be great Torrie!

Hello,

Wondering if anyone lives in the area of Morvern/Lochaline and wouldn't mind looking of Janet Livingstone gravestone at the lochaline graveyard. Janet died feb 1855. born approx 1797. husband was Allan Livingstone, but as he died later in kilfinan I do not expect him to be buried with her.

However Allan's Mother Mary Livingston is living with him at 90 years old in the 1841 census and died sometime after while the family still lived in Morvern. I expect her to be buried in Lochaline as well and would appreciate anyone looking up either of these graves.

thank you so much Torrie

Aberdeenshire / Old huntly cemetary look up - William simpson
« on: Thursday 07 January 16 23:17 GMT (UK)  »
Hello!

Looking for more info on a William Simpson. In his sons obit from Ireland William is listed as deceased as of 1921 (his sons death) and from huntly aberdeenshire.

I have looked up census records etc and had some help on this site as well but I am unable to find this family in Scotland for sure. Several possibles but unable to say for sure.

So! Hoping his grave may have more information! The family is Presbyterian and it looks like the old huntly cemetary would be a good place to start looking! Problem being I don't have his death date. I know he was alive  as of his sons marriage in 1876 and deceased by 1921 his sons death.....working on narrowing this date range down.

Thanks for any help!! Torrie

Hey everyone,

Just revisiting my family tree after several years and I am a bit confused regarding the process of ordering birth/marriage/death certificates from Ireland.

Groni - shows you can order death certificates for example online or by mail however that is Northern Ireland ....if my death is prior to 1922 irregardless of location ( Northern Ireland vs republic) do I order from them?

Where do I order deaths post 1922 when Ireland split?

I ask because years ago I ordered a death certificate for Elizabeth Simpson 1933...the record appears on ancestry.ca and I have the film number etc. however the response I see I got was from the Northern Ireland statistics and research agency in Belfast and states they did not have record. One of the listed reasons was the event may not have occurred in Northern Ireland. She died in rathdown, part of Dublin which I don't believe is Northern Ireland, so where should I apply for this post 1922 record?

Thank you for your assistance, Torrie :)
