The Common Room / Birth certificate confusion - time of birth
« on: Thursday 26 August 10 17:55 BST (UK)  »
How common was it for the time of birth to recorded on birth certificates in the early years of BMd certificates?

I ask because I have a birth certificate for my g-g-grandad's brother and box 1 reads:

Twenty fifth of May 1840 3:30 am at Runcorn.

Is it significant for the time of birth to be recorded, as I have not seen this before on any old birth certificates.

Thanks in advance,

Joel

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Thomas Hall of Cronton/Farnworth
« on: Sunday 13 September 09 21:42 BST (UK)  »
Hi guys, hoping someone could help on this one as I've been at a dead end for months.

Here's what I have so far...

According to censuses of 1851, 1861 and 1871, Thomas Hall was born in Cronton, Lancashire, the ages/dates according to the censuses are:

1841 - 35 (1806)
1851 - 56 (1795)
1861 - 63 (1798)
1871 - 74 (1797)

His age is given on his death certificate as 77, on 6th July 1874.

Between 1851 and 1861 at least he was a farmer living at Tanhouse Farm, Widnes.

He married Elizabeth Haddock in Runcorn, 13th Mar 1829.  From the 1851 census she appears to have been born around 1803 (age 48) in Halton/Runcorn.  IGI also gives a result for an Elizabeth Haddock born to parents William Haddock and Elizabeth Prichard (my Elizabeth's parents seem to be the same though I have no maiden surname for the mother) who married a William Prichard in Runcorn, 28th July, 1823, so could possibly be the earlier marriage of the same lady, as her birth matches Thomas' wifes christening date, both in Halton.

On the 1861 census, he is at Tanhouse Farm, with wife Martha, though I've no marriage to her, nor death of Elizabeth yet.

Their children were:
Mary b. abt 1829
Peter b. abt 1830
Thomas b. 1832
John b. abt 1834
Robert b. 1840
Sarah Ann b. abt 1843

He died in Hereford, where he was lodging in 1871 as a retired farmer.

Now for the blanks I've been stuck on:

Place and date of birth proper
Parents names
Siblings
Death of Elizabeth
Marriage to Martha

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Family History Beginners Board / hello there i could really use some help
« on: Friday 06 March 09 02:19 GMT (UK)  »
hello everyone,

ive been trying to get a family tree/family history done for a while now.  i have some limited information at the moment, and a huge number of photographs from my grandmother, who i need to put names and stories to.  my grandmother went into hospital last week with an infection, and told me e would go through them and name people and shed tell me all she knew...

tragically, after three days in hospital, she died this sunday gone, which has been a tremendous blow to me. its also made me more determined than ever to get the history done, if just to honour her memory.

as she was a few weeks short of her 95th birthday, understandably she was the last of her generation in the family it seems, and all of the knowledge and memories are sadly gone with her.

to cut a long story short, and avoid a eulogy, ill tell you how things stand (who knows, perhaps there could be relations here or someone who knows the family)...

our surname is hall.  my grandmothers (paternal) maiden name was stringer, and she was born in anfield, though im told her parents were name stringer and battye, and came from holmfirth, near huddersfield.  she was winifred maude stringer, her brothers were sydney and norman. her fathers name was william stringer.  as ive lost my notes for some time, i forget her mothers name, though the surname was battye, and her sister, clara amelia, left to marry a man named dilworth, from saskachewan, canada.  the dilworths now live in medicine hat there i believe, though welost contact last year after my grandmothers cousin, leonard dilworth, died.

on the hall side, i also dont have any notes to hand (am frantic to find them though), so this is all off the top of my head.  my grandfather was thomas laurence hall, his father peter hall, his brother stanley- also one or two sisters,i think peggy being one.   the rest escapes me sadly as its been rather an emotional time.  ill repost tomorrow after i speak to me dad.

i have plenty of photographs, going back 6 generations to the birkets and chadwicks (entered the family maternally of course), a scrap book filled with info, albeit not in any particular order, some death/internment cards from the 1800s, and some misplaced notes (as well as remembered info, though due to the recent passing of my grandma its hard to think of much right now.  im sure much more will surface over the next few weeks too.

im here to ask for:

practical advice as to how to best begin.

see if anyone here could possibly be connected to my family in anyway.  i believe the name battye is common to holmfirth.

if so please contact me (i know its a long shot, but worth trying).  ive not found any published family history so far, but am still searching this avenue.

ill post more information soon if it is requested.

thanks for your time
