Dublin / My Missing Grandmother
« on: Tuesday 09 November 21 09:57 GMT (UK)  »
I have previously used RootsChat with much success. My grandmother Kathleen REILLY later HELMAN had a very tempestuous relationship with grandfather James Henry HELMAN. I have never been able to find her birth. She married g'father in London in 1891. She died in Dublin in 1931. She was a convicted criminal with a long history of jail, and Magdalen Laundry sentences for drunkenness and cruelty to her children. IU have documents on most of these. Including the one which shows my mother Rachel HELMAN in jail as a three weeks old baby with Kate in 1903.

During the lockdown in Australia I was at last able to get a clue to her birth place as in one jail record it stated her next of kin as one Mary FULLAM her sister.  This rang a HUGE bell for me as I had my DNA analysis done and had three FULLAM people contact me as closely related individuals.

While not knowing Kate's birth place and residence I was able to find Mary FULLAM(nee REILLY)
parents and grandparents all living in Ringsend, Co Dublin. I have been in close contact with two of the FULLAM families and we have established positive connections.  BUT!!!!! I still cannot find any record of Kate's birth

Suggestions on how o proceed to obtain this date would be greatly appreciated.

« on: Friday 10 April 15 23:48 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for HANLEY (HANLY) family in Co Meath.

Found a 1803 Census scrap for Kentstown with HANLEYs mentioned.  It is headed LEGMUCK.

What or where is this?  Is it a village or a farm name?

Would love to know.
Many thanks in anticipation.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Spelling of Surname
« on: Monday 06 April 15 12:22 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Have just received Marriage entry for St Peters Parish Church, Dublin, Ireland, 1855

Name of Bride is given as Anna Rugsegga.  This is open to many variations including one with an Umlaut above the "u"

The signature appears to be Anna ??????????. (including an umlaut)

I would appreciate assistance with what the surname of the signature actually is.

Many thanks in anticipation.

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Grenadier Guards and the 1891 Census
« on: Wednesday 08 May 13 12:13 BST (UK)  »
I am having trouble finding my relative on the 1891 census.

He was Frederick BROAD, who joined the Guards in November, 1890. He was born in 1871.

I notice some other posts from 2008 with similar requests.

Just wondering if anyone has further information on this subject.

Armed Forces / Identification of War Medals!
« on: Saturday 22 December 12 08:59 GMT (UK)  »
I know it is a long shot...but... would anyone please be able to identify the two medals on this policeman's uniform?  I know they are not in colour and this may be asking a lot, but thought it worth a try, knowing how great is the expertise of RootsChat members!

It is believed he served in the Boer War c 1897 - 1902, and may have served elsewhere after these dates.

He was a police officer in Sheffield, YKS from 1905 until just before his death in 1936.

He is listed as a Guardsman on his M/C in 1897.

Name is Frederick Samuel Charles BARNES aka BROAD.

Many thanks in anticipation.

Ireland / Item in Irish Times 1864
« on: Tuesday 20 November 12 10:56 GMT (UK)  »
I believe that there are least two items concerning my Gt Grandfather William Robert HELMAN in the Irish Times of 1864.

He was the gardener at Newbridge House for the COBBE Family.

One item concerns his election to the RHS  5 January, 1864'

The other may not be in the Times but in a local paper re the winning of a prize for apples at a local show.  Same gardener same House.

As I would like to quote these reference correctly I would appreciate the details of where in the paper these items may appear.  Page and Col number if possible.

Would really appreciate some assistance in these matters,

Many thanks in advance.

Dublin / Death Registration?
« on: Wednesday 14 November 12 11:44 GMT (UK)  »
Would someone who died in Donabate in 1866 have the place of death recorded as Swords ?

As I am in Australia my knowledge of the geography of hat area is rather "fuzzy".

Is Newbridge House also in the same area?

My great grandparents, both lived in Donabate M/C; were married in Dublin and we now know he worked as the gardener for the COBBE Family at Newbridge House.

Would appreciate some clarification for all this.
