This photo original is only passport size, but ideal to attach family tree. Could some good folk fix the creases, particularly in the hair/head.

Thanks

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Westminster History c. 1850
« on: Tuesday 01 July 08 02:25 BST (UK)  »
My ancestor married at St Martins in the Field in 1846, his residence was College St. A son was born in 1849, his residence was then 3 Great Tufton St. occupation Mason. The family of 3 surviving sons Husband and Wife moved to Australia in 1854 as assisted migrants. He was then variously a Mason, Builder and Farmer in Sydney Australia until his death of Consumption in 1869.

What was his likely employment at this time in Westminster, I am working on the hypothesis that this could have been a time of construction on the House of Parliament or some other State Building, and that tradesman lived near to construction sites. By todays property values it is an unlikely area of residence for a tradesman the son of a Pinmaker from St Catherines Gloucester.

Google Earth has a nearby residence listed as the home of Lawrence Of Arabia, not a likely neighbour of a tradesman.

Canada Lookup Requests Completed / Albert Wilkes-Migrated Abt. 1870
« on: Thursday 27 March 08 00:01 GMT (UK)  »
I have been unable to find migration details for Albert Wilkes and family.

I would like shipping dates and ports if available.

Family Detail;
Albert Wilkes Currier b.1834 Gloucester
Mary Ann  Wife b. 1836 Cheltenham
Samuel b. 1860 Gloucester
Annie b. 1862 Gloucester
Eliza b. 1866 Gloucester
Alice b. 1869 Gloucester

Albert appears on the Federal census of 1871 (Ontario Index)
This detail then puts any migration to the period around 1870.

I have had a post on Albert previously which established links back to Gloucester UK and confirmed his common family ties with my ancestor, his brother, Charles who migrated to Australia in 1854 with family.

Warwickshire Lookup Requests / Alfred Wilkes 1861 Census
« on: Tuesday 25 March 08 04:40 GMT (UK)  »
I am tracing an Alfred Wilkes b. Gloucester abt 1831 and m. Mary Ann Howle 20 sep 1850 at St Phillips Birmingham Warwick.

He is on the Gloucester Census of 1871 as a widower With Kate E dau 18, Mary A dau 15, and Samuel A son 9.

An 1861 census entry of Alfred and family would help. Also 1841, 1851 entries for Mary Ann Howle and or family connections would help the puzzle.

Gloucestershire Completed Lookup Requests / Alfred Wilkes-Hair Dresser
« on: Monday 24 March 08 23:51 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for an Alfred Wilkes of 66 Northgate St Gloucester, date of detail unknown, but thought to be mid to late 1800's.

His name and address was on a handwritten note along with family papers in Australia so is presumed he would be related to the Wilkes family that migrated to Australia in 1854, Charles and Mary with family.

The family papers were in the possesion of Albert Hickling Wilkes, Grandson of Charles and Mary, at the time of his death in Sydney Australia 1968.

Any or all census records for Albert Wilkes as mentioned might help solve the riddle.

The Common Room / Medical Help- Cause of Death
« on: Thursday 21 February 08 04:58 GMT (UK)  »
I have a female died of Renal Failure.

She was a female died at age 43 in 1950, she was married 2 years and married at 41 (first marriage).

Cause of Death 1. Uraemia 2. Post operative renal failure. Length of illness 2. 15 days.

Anecdotal evidence from family members was that she died from some growth (pregnancy), given her age and lateness of marriage could a problem associated with pregnancy and renal failure be one of the same. My other thought is that pregnancy had nothing to do with it and Diabetes or overuse of pain killers could be the problem.

Comments and opinion please.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Removing Text
« on: Friday 07 December 07 02:37 GMT (UK)  »
I have a family group photo with unwanted text (names) inappropriately placed. I have Photoshop 7.0 which I am new to and unfamiliar with. I have found a tool to lasso each letter of text but can't got rid of it or fill it with appropriate background shadings. It is black and white and that is how it should remain at this time. I can scan the image at leisure so creating the appropriate file is not a problem.

Is it easy enough to post the basic steps to achieve a result, ( ie a quick idiot guide to photoshop) I would rather do it myself than just post the image for others to do for me.

Thanks

The Common Room / Medical Terminology - Epilepsy
« on: Tuesday 09 October 07 05:38 BST (UK)  »
I have an ancestor born 1910 died 1937. Cause of death was; 1. Broncho Pneumonia for 10 days, 2. Epilepsy. This person spent many years in a mental hospital till time of death.

This was not unusual as there were few facilities for the disabled needing constant care. My problem is with the Epilepsy term, I beleive from anecdotal evidence that he was severely disabled and problably described as developmentally disabled.

Was it more likely that he had cerebral palsy as this closer fits my take on the anecdotal evidence.

Would the history of cerebral palsey diagnosis more closely fit my belief.

The definitions I have found of Epilepsy seem to be short term fits and convulsions whereas this person was of constant disability by way of mobility and mental capacity.
