Nairnshire / Parents of James MacIntosh, Burnside of Lethen: 1841-1901+
« on: Monday 25 April 11 19:36 BST (UK)  »
James MacIntosh (1805, Ardclach to 1902 Auldearn), son of Arthur and Isabella (McLean) MacIntosh, was a saw miller and carpenter for Lethen House from at least 1841 through 1901 (I have all these census enumerations). James married Ann Lawson [dau. of James and Isabella (Kinnaird) Lawson] in Ardclach in 1827.
I would like to find the parents Arthur and Isabella McLean. The death cert. for James states that his deceased parents were Arthur MacIntosh, a journeyman carpenter, and Isabella McLean. The IGI lists a James McIntosh married 6 Mar 1812 in Ardclach to Isabel McLean. 1812 would be 5-7 years after the birth of James. The IGI also shows a daughter, Sophia, born to this couple 31 Oct 1822 in Ardclach.  I know, it's the IGI.
Perhaps both father and, in turn, son were employed by Lethen House.
Any suggestions?

Dunbartonshire / James Brown or Isabella Brown: 1916 Renton & Dumbarton
« on: Monday 25 April 11 19:11 BST (UK)  »
Looking for two Browns. In January 1916 my gg grandmother widow Mary Waugh (maiden name Brown), age 76, born Ireland in 1840, married in Bonhill in 1860, passed away at the residence of Isabella (Belle) Brown at  24 William Street, Dumbarton. The informant of the death was nephew James Brown of 7 Thimble Street, Renton.
Mary Brown Waugh was the dau. of of Charles Brown (d. Ireland pre 1851) and Isabella (b. 1821, Irl, d. 1857 Bonhill), known siblings were Elizabeth, b. 1838 Irl, and Catherine, b.1843 Irl.
I've tried for quite a few years to establish who "Belle" Brown was. There is no evidence that Belle was a sister, based on an 1851 census. Wife of a brother? No brother evident on the same census. On the succeeding census enumerations from 1861 through 1911, again no evidence of any relations.
I am hoping that someone could help connect up nephew James Brown with Belle - and then Mary Brown.
So far, I have gotten nowhere. Any ideas?

Dunbartonshire / Irish WAUGHs and BROWNs: Bonhill,Jamestown
« on: Sunday 24 April 11 19:13 BST (UK)  »
Please help.
Marriage cert. shows  22 Oct 1860 Alexandria RC Church
Groom:  William Waugh, bachelor, age 23 of Alexandria, Parents: Joseph Waugh and Catherine Waugh (M/S Hanlon).
Bride: Mary Brown, spinster, age 20 of Alexandria, Parents: Charles Brown and Isabella Brown (M/S Gallagher).
I have located the family in census enumerations from 1861 through to 1901, and again with William's death in March 1911, Mary's in 1916.
I have not located William at all before the marriage, but I do know that he was born in 'Ireland'. Mary Brown was located on the 1851 census living in Bonhill (Burn Street) with mother (widow) Isabella, age 30, and sisters Catherine and Elizabeth (never traced afterwards).
So, the problem again is 'cracking' the Irish origins (we have, using Griffiths, found possible Joseph Waugh and Charles Brown families living in proximity in Shankill, Belfast and another situation with namesakes living in Belfast - but no confirmation at all).

As well, I would like to trace by moving forward with sisters Catherine (b.c. 1842) and Elizabeth (b.c. 1838) both R.C. born in Ireland.

Tall order, but I do hope someone out there might have some ideas. Thanks so much. Brian (in Toronto)

Midlothian / John Manson/Marg't Robertson: So. Leith 1814+
« on: Sunday 24 April 11 18:53 BST (UK)  »
John and Margaret married in Edinburgh in 1790, and all six of their children were born there by 1803. However, in 1814, daughter Mary married James Douglas -
"James Douglas, Mason, Leith, and Mary Manson residing in Leith, and daughter of John Manson, Workman there, after proclamation of bans were married 30 Dec 1814.  Certified by the Father of the Bride, and Adam Manson Brother of the Bride."
Further, son John (b.c 1803, and my ggg grandfather) was married in the Relief Church of Leith in 1826.
However, I have not been able to find a death notice for the elder John, his age, or place of birth. We think we have located his wife Margaret on the 1841 census of South Leith, age 70, living with son Adam, age 40.
Stretching logic, husband John probably died in South Leith and 'probably' was born about the 1760-1770 range. We are certain he was not born in Edinburgh.
Any help with the elder John would be really appreciated. Thanks.

Renfrewshire / Alexander Smith:died 1868, Busby
« on: Sunday 24 April 11 18:19 BST (UK)  »
Looking for any information re origins of Alexander Smith who married Agnes Stewart in 1856 in Busby; parents listed as James Smith, farmer, and Sarah TEAS (not shown as deceased). On the 1861 census he was shown ('Alew' Smith) living at Mainstollnewland, Eastwood with wife Agnes and children Mary, James, and Sarah.
Alexander, a mason, died of pneumonia September 1868 in Busby, leaving wife Agnes with 6 children (cannot locate them on the 1871 census).
Agnes remarried to widower Thomas Wilson in Dec 1872 in Busby, and then emigrated to Massachusetts by 1886.
Been stuck on Alexander and his parents for a decade. Any suggestions or help would be immensely appreciated. Thanks

Lanarkshire / McKay, James (shiver): Glasgow grocer c. 1845
« on: Sunday 24 April 11 15:22 BST (UK)  »
A total wall for 15 years.
From son's marriage [Married Dec. 1864 at London Road, Glasgow by rites of the Free Church of Scotland by Alex Wilson, Minister, Bridgeton Free Church, Glasgow], and a 1916 Jamestown death cert., all we have is John b.c 1845 Glasgow, son of James McKay, a grocer, and Jane(t) Smith both deceased; married Glasgow in 1864; died, again son of James, a grocer, and Jane McKay nee Smith, both deceased.
John was my great grandfather. I have never been able to establish any siblings. I have John on every census enumeration from 1871 through 1901, and his birth year seems to vary on each of them (somewhere between 1844 and 1847), although "born in Glasgow" never changes.
Perhaps James McKay and Jane(t) Smith were originally from Ireland - at least that's been my excuse, no other logical reason.
As you can perhaps tell, I would be greatly appreciative for ANY help whatsoever.
Thank you - Brian in Toronto

Nairnshire / James McIntosh, 1805-1902: Ardclach/Lethen
« on: Sunday 12 December 10 02:57 GMT (UK)  »
Looking for anything on James McIntosh, son of Arthur and Isabella (McLean) from Ardclach, who was an estate saw miller, carpenter of Burnside of Lethen from at least 1841 through the 1901 census. His wife was Ann Lawson (b. 1806, Ardclach: d. 1871 Burnside), dau. of James Lawson and Isabella Kinnaird. They were my ggg grandparents.

Dunbartonshire / Waugh/Gallacher marriage 1887
« on: Sunday 12 December 10 02:42 GMT (UK)  »
Marriage Certificate: 3 Aug 1887, R.C. Chapel, Alexandria, DNB
William Gallacher, 25, of 10 Burn Street, Bonhill; son of Daniel Gallacher, general labourer, and Catherine McAulay
and
Isabella Waugh (her mark), 23, of 23 Milton Terrace, Jamestown; dau. of William Waugh, labourer, and Mary Brown.  Witnessed: Catherine Waugh and David O’Brien

I have tried to find this couple both on the 1891 and 1901 census with no success. It's possible I just simply 'missed' them (spelling?), or that they headed overseas. As Isabella was my g grandmother's younger sister, nothing has been found in her 'estate' papers that would help steer me in the right direction.
Any suggestions?

Where and what purpose was the Larbert Hospital in 1910? Are there any available records?
