New Zealand Completed Requests / Accessing archive materials in Wellington
« on: Monday 27 April 15 12:43 BST (UK)  »
A bit of a general query here, I have found a couple of items of interest on the NZ Archives website, unfortunately these are not available online and require a visit to the archives in Wellington, unfortunately I'm in Scotland so that is out of the question,
does anyone know of transcribers prepared to visit the archives

I wonder if anyone can help me with an approximate date for this photograph, sent to me by a friend in the USA. The only information that I have on it is that the lady on the left is Agnes Proctor Blackhall b abt 1860 and the lady next to her is her daughter Evelyn b abt 1892.
Agnes died in 1949 but I am thinking from the clothing and the formality of the photograph that this was taken much earlier. I'm sorry that I can't supply more details

I have recently expanded my Blackhall research to cover Australia and would like to get in touch with any Blackhalls or people with Blackhall ancestors.

I have a website at blackhall-genealogy.org.uk and can be contacted at (*)

Aberdeenshire / Episcopalian Records
« on: Tuesday 07 February 12 19:11 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
Hope someone can clear this up for me

I have a little problem with a record in the Scottish OPRs for a baptism at St Pauls Episcopal Church in Aberdeen which quotes a date of 2 Aug 1755, a similar record for Baptisms at St Pauls quotes a date of 10 Aug 1755, I am aware that Episcopalian baptisms were supposed to be notified to the Church of Scotland but I would have thought that would have taken place after the Episcopalian one

The OPR

William Blackhall, vintner, and his spouse had a son born; baptised John  by the Revd Mr Gordon of St Pauls in presence of Jno Laing, indweller, and David Longland, sclatter
Date 2 Aug 1755

St Pauls
William Blackhall, indweller and Mary Thom his spouse, son John, Witnesses: John Gib, sacrist, & John Laing

The St Pauls entry is from a transcription in one of the Spalding Club Miscellanies from the baptismal records of St Pauls
The OPR entry is taken directly from the ScotlandsPeople image

I am thinking that the two entries are for the same person but can't understand the differences unless William was hedging his bets by having John baptised twice

Argyllshire / A bit of local knowledge required - Completed
« on: Thursday 05 May 11 10:26 BST (UK)  »
Hi folks

I'm hoping someone here with a bit of local knowledge can help with deciphering a placename in Kilmun. The attached image is from the 1871 Scottish census and I am having difficulty in deciphering the place involved. The only thing I can make out is that the first location is ???????? House and the second is ????? Lodge. If it is any help the GRO ref for the page is 510/0/8/0/25. I have tried my usual trick of looking at my copy of the 1881 census and using the Neighbours option to troll through the whole of Kilmun but with no joy

Occupation Interests / Raiwaymen - how can you trace them
« on: Friday 18 March 11 08:54 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I have a picture recently published in our local paper showing a train leaving Aberdeen station. It lists the 'crew' of the train, the loco number and name. I am paticularly interested in the guard, one Thomas Blackhall. The picture was taken in 1955 so  it will be a British Rail train, however from a bit of searching I know it was formerly an LNER train. Does anyone know of anywhere I can go to find details pertaining to British Rail/LNER staff

Details are

Guard - Thomas Blackhall
Driver - George Chapman
Fireman - Clark Walker

12.40 Aberdeen to London June 1955
Loco number - 60525
Loco name A H Peppercorn

Has anyone come across a place or location called Bennishoill. I found it referred to in a list of Burgesses in Aberdeen published by the Spalding Club, but when I google it it only leads me back to the book
