Lincolnshire / What's in a name?
« on: Sunday 16 June 13 14:15 BST (UK)  »
Hi Everyone,

I'm hoping someone can help me. On 8th May 1715 one of my ancestors, George CHANTRY was married to Mary HARE at Lincoln in the church of St Peter at Gowts – the church is still standing. I'm curious what “at Gowts” refers to but so far Dictionaries and Gazetteers consulted haven’t helped!  I'd be grateful if someone can help satisfy my curiosity.  ???

The Common Room / Contempt of Court at Lincolnshire Quarter Sessions Michaelmas 1841
« on: Saturday 09 October 10 21:56 BST (UK)  »
I'm not sure that this is the right place for this post but I can't see anywhere that seems more appropriate.

I have found a newspaper report of a case of stealing which would have been tried at the Sleaford Quarter Sessions but for the fact that a material witness refused to answer to a subpoena. The witness was the wife of the man from whom the goods had been stolen. The magistrate directed that proceedings should be taken against the witness for "disobedience and contempt of the process of the court, and the Clerk of the Peace was desired to take the necessary steps accordingly".

I am curious and would like to know what happened. Does anyone have any idea how swift the court action might be? And, indeed, any ideas what kind of action would be taken?

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Mother and daughters
« on: Saturday 28 August 10 19:59 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

This is a photo of my grandmother and her two youngest daughters. Is it possible to remove the hand from the middle of the photo? I have always thought it spoils the picture.

Hoping you can help.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Occupation?
« on: Saturday 24 April 10 16:13 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

This is part of a death certificate. Can anyone work out what William Cook's occupation was please?  I think it might be "slaytor" but this would not fit with the man I am looking for.

Lancashire / Chichester Lane, Barrow-in-Furness?
« on: Wednesday 30 December 09 10:32 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Everyone,

I’m hoping one of you good people can help me. On the burial record of distant relative is the address 4 Chichester Lane, Barrow-in-Furness. I’m going cross eyed looking at the maps and plans I have of the area (some of them dating from that era) but cannot find a Chichester Lane. I also tried an address search on the 1911 census but that came up ‘no result’. Does anyone know if there is or ever was a Chichester Lane at Barrow?

A Happy New Year to you all.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / 1911 Census
« on: Sunday 01 November 09 20:34 GMT (UK)  »
How would you interpret this child's age? I thought it would be 4 months and therefore he was born cNovember 1910 but I cannot find a birth registration to fit at all.  :-\ :-\ The census entry says he was born at Barrow-in-Furness.

Find My Past transcribers have interpreted the age as 4 years. ???

Any comments/suggestions would be very welcome.

Cumberland / John Jackson - Park Gate, Irton
« on: Tuesday 27 October 09 13:52 GMT (UK)  »
My 3x gt. grandfather John Jackson died in 1844 at Park Gate, Irton, Cumberland. Please can anyone tell me where this is?

The cause of death on his death cert. is "Visitation of God". I'm assuming this was a sudden death which was a bit of a mystery. Does anyone know if the phrase had a more precise meaning? He died on 24th April but registration of the death is dated 30th May.

I'd be grateful for any help on this one. ??? ??? ???

Isle of Man Lookup Requests / Isle of man Marriage Index look-up please.
« on: Tuesday 20 October 09 20:43 BST (UK)  »
Is anyone on the Isle of Man willing to search the marriage indexes for two marriages please?

In both cases the bride was born on the Isle of Man and the groom was English I have looked for both marriages in the UK BMD indexes and neither are there.  I have also looked at the marriages index on the Isle of Man FHS web site which were formerly on Bryan Lawson’s web site again without success.

William Forster Coleshill married Myra Clark(e) in 1901/02 possibly at Braddan or somewhere in Douglas. Both were single at the time of the 1901 census. William died in the September quarter of 1902

Walter Thomas Hurren married Minnie Lynam probably in Douglas between 1911 and 1917. I have found both Walter and Minnie on the 1911 census with their respective families and both were single. By 1917 when Minnie's grandfather Thomas Lynam died Walter and Minnie were husband and wife living in Staffordshire.

I’d be very grateful if anyone can find these two marriages in the IOM BMD indexes.

Hello,

According to the IGI Samuel Topham married Hannah Warwick on the 1st February 1781 at St Sampson's Church, York. I would be very grateful if someone can look at the parish register for me please. I understand that the original registers for the York churches are at the Borthwick Institute. I live in the Midlands so York is quite some distance away

Thank you
