World War One / William BIGLEY - WWI - Local newspaper appeal
« on: Thursday 03 September 09 12:49 BST (UK)  »
This story appeared in my local newspaper the other day, appealing for information about a WW1 local hero William Bigley and I immediately thought that someone on here will probably have the answers they need.

Anyone with more information about William Bigley should contact Terry Kelly, the Jarrow and Hebburn reporter for the South Tyne Star. I can provide a phone number or email address via PM if required.

Down / James Adair / Jane Minnis Co Down
« on: Wednesday 26 August 09 08:08 BST (UK)  »
Hi all. I'm currently at a loss on how to find any more information on my gg grandparents and would appreciate any input or advice. I've searched for them on the IGI pilot site, Ancestry and also Ros Davies site to no avail.

James Adair, born c1845 in Newtonards (although sometimes states Comber on the census?) Father was William Adair (labourer). Married Jane Minnis in 1865 (West Rainton, Co Durham). Jane was born c1850 in Comber, her parents were Robert Minnis (miner) and Margaret Reid.

Regards,
Rob

Durham Lookup Requests / Robert Adair 1891 census?
« on: Thursday 09 July 09 14:55 BST (UK)  »
Hi all. I have found him in the census from 1871-1911 except 1891 when he appears to disappear? Details as follows:

Robert Minnis Adair born 1868 West Rainton, Durham to James Adair and Jane Adair (nee Minnis). Married Matilda Cumberland 1893.
1871 census RG10 4986 49 8 (West Rainton)
1881 census RG11 4977 50 9 (West Rainton)
1891 ???
1901 census RG13 4748 84 1 (Felling)

I'm assuming its just transcribed incorrectly but I'm stumped after trying all the usual spellings? Help please!

Family History Beginners Board / James Youens 1861 census??
« on: Thursday 18 June 09 15:48 BST (UK)  »
I have him in 1841 (HO107/297/18) 1851 (HO107/2400/99/43) and 1871 (RG10/5028/53/14) but I can only find his wife and children in 1861 (RG9/3786/34/1).

I have found a "James Young" that fits for age and place of birth, but he is on board a ship Gypsy of Sunderland? (RG9/4474/30) as a mate, although this would make sense with him being a sailmaker in the previous census.

What is the recommended route to double check that I have the right person ie is there any way of checking the ships crew by other means?

Durham / Fiche for St Stephens, South Shields?
« on: Thursday 18 June 09 10:21 BST (UK)  »
I have seen them listed in the South Shields library and at Bolbec Hall, but due to my shift patterns I never get a chance to get to either of these.

Therefore I would like to know if any fiche for baptisms and marriages is actually available to buy for St Stephens or is it just available to view at the above?

I'm also looking for information on the availability of fiche from St Peters and St Pauls RC church in South Shields as I have hit an illegitimate "brick wall" and I'm hoping that he may have been baptized and a father named?

I also have a post in the "for sale/wanted" board regarding this topic.

Durham Completed Look up Requests / *COMPLETED* Thomas Eade 1861 census?
« on: Monday 08 June 09 10:30 BST (UK)  »
I have found him from 1871 - 1891, but he is nowhere to be found in 1861 or prior? I know he was a mariner, but if he was at sea at the time, could his wife and child have also been with him?

Details I currently have are:
Thomas Eade born c1829 Limehouse, Middlesex, Essex, died 1898 South Shields.
Married 26/3/1851 in St Hilda's, South Shields to Elizabeth Young.
Son Robert Eade born 1854, South Shields.

I've found a family on the 1851 census that I've been hunting for ages and now can't decipher the brothers name!

The reference is HO 107 and what looks like 2434 but very faded.
Details are Sarah Sewell, head, widow, grocer, Main Street, Cockermouth, her children James and Agnes and her Brother Isaac ?? (hoping this will lead me to Sarah's maiden name and then hopefully her husband)

It looks like Grane or Grare to me but any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!!
