Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Cause of Death? SOLVED
« on: Thursday 09 February 17 01:41 GMT (UK)  »
I'm struggling to make out the top cause of death here - I can see the one underneath says chronic dysentry and I think the first word is syncope but just not seeing the second word. The death took place on board a ship. Any help greatly appreicated.  Thanks.

This is another photo form my great grandmother's set; it's a complete mystery and I would really appreciate thoughts on dating it and on where it may have been taken.  Perhaps someone will recognise the type of architecture.  It certainly doesn't look like Glasgow where many of the photos in the set were taken!  Some of the photographs are from Australia so I wonder if this one could be too.  Sadly the back is blank and there is no sign of a photographer's name.  I can see something is written on the house at the top; I think it perhaps says "Clifton/Clinton Cottage" but it's very hard to read.

Any thoughts greatly appreciated and if anyone wants to clean it up or colourise it that would be great.  Thanks in advance.

I have a set of 19th/20th century photographs that belonged to my great grandmother and amongst them is this coloured-in photograph by "John M Hutton, Artist, 10 Bridget Street, Glasgow".

According to this website John M Hutton was at 10 Bridge Street between 1860 and 1874:

It would be great if anyone could help me narrow the date down any further.  I think 1860s due to clothing but expert opinions greatly appreciated.

I would also be grateful for any restores - here's a link to an uncompressed version:

Thanks very much.

Here's another one from my set of mystery photos owned by my grandmother.  This is one of the few not taken in Glasgow.  The photographers were apparently operating in Liverpool and Birkenhead between 1869 and 1896 but I think it can be narrowed down to between 1882 and 1885 due to the fact "-Marion Imp Paris -" is printed on the back.  I found information dating that mark to 1882-1885 here:

http://www.cartes.freeuk.com/dated/mip.htm

Does the clothing and hairstyle fit in with that estimate?  I wouldn't mind a few guesses at her age as I'm not too sure.

This one is a bit the worse for wear so I'd love to see it cleaned up and to see what the colour whizzes can make of it.  The broach she is wearing is intriguing but hard to make out any detail. I had always thought the photo was taken earlier than the 1880s and may have been of my great great grandmother as the woman bears a real resemblance to my great grandmother but her mother died in 1873 so the dating rules her out and makes it even more of a mystery.  At least two lines related my my great grandmother lived in Birkenhead - her uncle and his family and her brother and his family although I don't believe her brother went there until the late 1880s.  It's very tough to pinpoint who she is but still a great and interesting photo  ;)

Thanks for any and all help with it.

Hi everyone,

I have the following photo that was part of a prized album of my grandmother's so I know he must be a relative on my grandmother's side of the family but other than that I'm none the wiser.  Sadly none of the photos have any indication who the people in them are but I've been able to work out a few.  They are amazing photos to have nonetheless and I treasure them even though they are mysteries :)  It's one of my genealogy quests to one day find out who they are all!  Any help to date this one to narrow the field down would be really helpful (I've also attached the back in case anyone has details on the photographer) and if anyone wants to work on him, colourise etc then please feel free.  I can supply higher resolution via email if required.  I'd be very grateful for any help with this.

Thanks,

Michelle

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Help With Service Record
« on: Thursday 08 December 11 15:52 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Everyone - I'm trying to work out exactly what this extract from a WWI service record says about previous service.

I think it says 6? Batt Manchester Regt on the top but I'm not sure about the number.  There seems to be a "June" in the second line but I can't make sense of it.

Any help gratefully received.

Lancashire / Nutter Street, Salford
« on: Thursday 08 December 11 15:00 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone have access to a list of street name changes for Salford?  I'm looking to find out about Nutter Street.  I know it existed in 1922 as John Thomas O'Brien and his wife Emma lived there at that time - there is a story that the family had a greengrocer's shop in Salford and I'm wondering if it could have been at this address (No7 Nutter Street).  Does anyone know anything about Nutter Street or have any idea what it has become?  Thanks for any help.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Help With Street Name
« on: Thursday 08 December 11 14:27 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to work out the street address in Salford Manchester given on a service record - the address is recorded several times and I think it might be Nutter Street as it looks like there was once a Nutter Street in Salford but I just wanted to see what others think.

Also I think the first address is 2 Scott Lane, Pendleton but I can't find a street by that name so I'm not 100% sure.

Any help gratefully received.  Thanks.

Lancashire / HOLLAND illegitimate children mystery (Padiham)
« on: Wednesday 30 November 11 17:54 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find any records pertaining to the four illegitimate children of a woman named Mary Holland who was born in 1838 in Padiham, Lancs to parents Henry Holland and Grace Hirst.  It would be great to find out who the father of the children was but I know it's probably unlikely I'll be able to.

The four children were:

Sarah Ann Holland born Q3 1858 in Padiham
Henry Holland born c.1862 in Padiham
James Holland born c.1867 in Padiham
Grace Holland born Q1 1870 in Padiham

I believe Grace and James were both baptised on 24th Apr 1870 in Padiham but I haven't been able to find anything for Sarah Ann or Henry.  Mary eventually married a widower with 2 daughters of his own, Henry Ellis, in 1875 and she and the children were living with him in 1871 but I don't believe he was the father of the children as their names always seem to be given as Holland.  I have traced Sarah Ann and Grace further forward through their marriages but have not managed to find out what happened to Henry and James yet.

I'm guessing it's possible there may be entries for them in Padiham's bastardy papers - does anyone have access to those?  Any help at all with this mystery would be gratefully received - thanks!
