Family Bibles / Coton family - bible
« on: Sunday 24 May 15 12:04 BST (UK)  »
Not really a 'family bible' - there's no list of family members etc. - but a bible inscribed as a gift from her parents to a Nineteenth century Fanny Coton on her 21st birthday.

I have no idea of location - and can't remember how it came into my possession.

If anyone has an interest in it, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Due to inexperience and not a small amout of naivety, I have two trees on GR and pay two subsciptions. One tree has my wife's family (I only make an appearance as the husband and father of our children) The other has my family and my wife only appears as my wife (if you see what I mean!)

I've become disillusioned with GR recently and so I've bought FTM2012 with the intention of transferring the trees using GEDCOMs from GR.

On FTM2012, which I haven't loaded to my PC yet, I'd like just one, merged family tree.

How do I best achieve that please?  Is it best to merge the GEDCOMs somehow. If so could someone explain how I do it (step-by-step please - I'm still not that PC literate) Or should I (if I can) create two trees on FTM2012 and then manipulate those?

Any help/suggestions would be gratefully received and much appreciated. Thanks.

Dorset / Local knowledge? Manston
« on: Friday 04 January 13 17:43 GMT (UK)  »
My wife's father was born in Manston, Dorset in 1913. A contemporary newspaper announcement says it was at 'Old Manor Farm' The birth certificate just says 'Manston'
His parents had married in 1911 in Longburton and, as far as we know, there was no family connection with Manston.
I can see from modern and also from old maps that there is a 'Manor Farm' in Manston (opp. The Plough PH) but was there a separate property - Old Manor Farm - or perhaps it was a nursing home/cottage hospital?
I've looked at the occupants of Manor Farm at the time and their names mean nothing to the family.
Has anyone knowledge/records of the village in the early 20th Century please?

The Common Room / WANTED 'Motor Cycling' magazine 1913
« on: Friday 09 March 12 17:09 GMT (UK)  »
Or even just the chance of a copy of an article.

On 3rd September 1913, Bournemouth MCC held a speed trial at Canford Park, Wimborne and my father-in-law was winner of one of the races.

I believe there's a report of the event in the relevant issue of 'Motor Cycling' (known colloquially as 'The Green 'Un' by bikers of the day)

......or does anyone know if there's an archive of this mag anywhere?

Many thanks.

Ireland / Ards TT and Phoenix Park Motor Racing 1930's
« on: Wednesday 14 September 11 22:37 BST (UK)  »
My wife's father (P.C. Adams) raced MGs during the period 1933-1936 and I'm trying to trace the races in which he competed.
I know he raced at Donington Park, England in 1934 as I've been lucky enough to find a programme listing his entry.
Checking the other likely venues for this era leaves me with Brooklands, Ards and Phoenix Park.
The Ards TT is resonably well documented on the 'net but I can't find any competitor lists and I don't know if there were 'support races' in addition to the TT inself. My father-in-law was friendly with contemporary racers such as Eddie Hall and Freddie Dixon who competed in the TT.
I can find no records of races at Phoenix Park - does anyone have knowlege - or better still, programmes - of these events?
The only clues I have is that he raced an MG Midget or a K3 Magnette (a rare car and well-documented, I believe there were only 33 built) and he was hospitalised after a crash. He said this was reported in the local newspaper which is probably true as crashes were regarded as 'bad form' in those days! He also said that the most famous of drivers, Nuvolari, visited him in hospital.......
I appreciate this is a long shot but hopefully there are enthusiasts who may be able to help?
It'd make my wife very happy to discover more about her father's history.
He died in 2005 but wrote down most of what I've described above.......except for the track details!
Many thanks.

This Birmingham marked pendant belonged to my wife's grandfather (the L.W.A. inscription is his initials). The engraved date matches the hallmark (1913) - and I've looked up the maker (William James Dingley)

I don't know who S.R.L. is.......

I also don't know is whether the registered number on the engraved side will identify the organisation (Masonic? - there's no obvious symbols) or whether it's just a manufacturer's pattern number.

Any help would be much appreciated

Thought I'd post this to see if there's any interest. I've worked out that this photo was taken somewhere around 1910 - almost certainly at 'The Chalet' used as a summer residence by Edward Watkin until he died in 1901 (he of the 'Watkin path' up Snowdon and friend of Gladstone, railway entrepreneur etc etc).

The names - with enhancements from the 1911 census which filled in a few details -  were on the back of the original photo.

My wife's grandfather is the chap (mr Wm Lloyd) on the back row. Then a coachman. The Day family are from Beddgelert and employed as servants/housekeepers etc. The Alston family are obviously the 'masters'.

I have a few more details if required.

Nice period photo if nothing else......

Could anyone help please?

I'm trying to find any trace of a Vivian Jarman who possibly had American connections and who lived in the Kingswinford, Brierley Hill or Stourbridge area in the 1940's (when I think he'd be in his 20's)

The only other thing I suspect about Vivian is that some of his family may have suffered from a rare skin abnormality known today as Goltz Syndrome (in the 1940's there wasn't a name for it)

My family research is about this genetic disease.

Any information would be much appreciated - I guess there's just a possibility that he's still alive so a PM might be the best response.....

I've posted this in Staffordshire and Worcestershire to cover all these towns.

Many thanks.
