The Common Room / COMPLETED - THANKS GRO Marine Death Indices
« on: Saturday 19 December 09 22:30 GMT (UK)  »
I've found the record of the death of Jeremiah Murphy in the Marine Death Indices. I believe it is the death record of my great grandfather and to check it I would like to order the death certificate - can anyone tell me if you can order certificates from the marine death indices as you can from the 'normal' GRO death Index please?

I'm assuming I can't order it online or can I?

Any advice much appreciated as always

Thanks

Kim

Census and Resource Discussion / 1851 census - Wittersham, Kent
« on: Sunday 08 November 09 08:05 GMT (UK)  »
I have my ancestor Charlotte Bradley and her two illegitimate children on the 1851 census living at Peiving Farm, Wittersham. On the original census page in the occupation column it gives Charlotte's occupation as 16-5, and on the transcription on FindMyPast thats what her occupation is listed as.

16-5? Surely thats just what the enumerator has written for some reason.

HO107/1620/158/9

Can anyone shed any light on to what that might mean - I'm interested as Charlotte had her two children at the Tenterden Union workhouse and I wonder how she was supporting herself and her family.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Would anyone be kind enough to do a couple of look ups on the death records for me?

My ancestors in question are:

Jeremiah Murphy born about 1827 in Ireland, died between 1881 & 1891 probably in St Martins, Guernsey

Charlotte Murphy - born about 1830 in Kent, died between 1881 & 1891 as above

Charles Frederick Murphy - born 1849 in Kent, died after 1911, probably in St Martins

Sophia Louisa Murphy - born 1856 in Dorset, died after 1911, probably in St Martins

I would be extremely grateful if someone could help me.

Thank you

Kind regards

Kim

The Common Room / Suname change - COMPLETED THANKS
« on: Monday 26 October 09 08:16 GMT (UK)  »
I expect this has been asked before but anyway.....

I have an ancestor who was born illegitimately, I have his birth certificate and his name is Charles Bradley (mothers name Charlotte Bradley - no one named as father). Several years later his mother married Jeremiah Murphy and from then on Charles and his older sister took the name Murphy.

I have Charles marriage certificate and on it he gives his name as Charles Murphy, father is Jeremiah.

Was this commonplace when 'adoptions' weren't formalised? I just thought that with a marriage certificate being a legal document he should have given his name at birth rather than the name he was known by.

Not massively important, just interesting.

Thanks

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Broadhead Family - driving me mad!
« on: Thursday 22 October 09 14:10 BST (UK)  »
I've posted on here before about my 4x great grandfather and the whereabouts of his birth a while ago but now the family are really driving me to distraction!

Benjamin Broadhead born about 1809 in Wakefield or Walton depending on which census you look at although the two are very close. There is no trace for a birth/baptism of Benjamin Broadhead on the IGI (well, not that I can find). So I thought I would send off for his marriage cert to help me and Wendy47 very kindly found the entry below on Ancestry (the index was for 3rd quarter, 1839) but when I searched on both Ancestry and FindMyPast I could only get the transcriptions index, not the original index which as you can see the page number is partially obliterated. And there is no marriage on the marriage index  ??? that I searched and try as I might I cannot find the index that Wendy47 found for me.

On the IGI there is a marriage in Alverthorpe for Benjamin Broadhead and Ellen Broadhead in 1839 but it is a submitted entry. So today I phoned the Wakefield Registry Office and a very helpful lady searched in 1839 and two years either side and there were no entries for Benjamins marriage but the entry for it is below for all to see!!! I told her about that entry but all she could say was that they had no records of it. By the way, his wife's name is Ellen Crowther (on the IGI her birth record is Crouder) EDIT: There is a marriage for Benjamin Broadhead in Wortley but that's not the right one.

On to Benjamins children! His eldest daughter, Selina, who is my 3xg grandmother is an elusive creature too. Again I cannot find ANY record of her birth. From different census she is listed as being born in Wakefield (the most likely), or Goole where she ended up living but the only Selina Broadhead I can find as being born in 1844 is one in Sheffield - I sent off for that certificate but it's the wrong parents. Again on the IGI there is no Selina with the parents Benjamin & Ellen. I have the certifiacte for Selina's sister Ada Louise Broadhead who was born in 1855 in Wakefield: right parents and appearing on 1861 census with all the right family and I have Selina's marriage certificate which lists Benjamin as her father and with the right occupation.

Benjamin & Ellen had 6 children (that I know of) but I can only find birth records for 3 of them.

Can anyone suggest where I can go from here. I've searched everywhere I can think of so ANY suggestions very welcome indeed.

Sorry for rambling on!

Channel Islands Lookup Requests / The Guernseymen who marched away 1914-1918
« on: Sunday 18 October 09 20:54 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have a copy of the book 'Dies Aix; God help us - the Guernseymen who marched away' by Major Edwin Parks and would be willing to do a look-up for me?

The book is available from an online book retailer but I just can't afford it at the moment so if there is anyone who would kindly do a look-up for the name Murphy I would be very, very grateful.

Thanks in anticipation.

World War One / COMPLETED THANK YOU - Guernsey WW1
« on: Saturday 17 October 09 23:37 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Could anyone tell me if men from the Channel Islands were conscripted during WW1 please?

May be a daft question but one branch of my family settled in Guernsey mid 1800's and several of the grandson's of the original chap who settled there would have been the 'right age' in 1914 and I would like to know if it is worth trying to find out their armed forces record (if any).

Many thanks

Census and Resource Discussion / 1841 Lincolnshire
« on: Wednesday 07 October 09 22:58 BST (UK)  »
Hi

There is a family on the 1841 census in Marsh Chapel whose name has been wrongly transcribed as Sanant - it's actually Smart. The entry has been crossed through with a note at the bottom of the page some of which I can't read but the rest of the note says 'an error, there are only 5 houses on this page' RG: H0107, Piece: 640,
Folio: 14/6, Page: 4.

The same family (correctly transcribed as Smart) also appear on 1841 under Fulstow - RG: H0107, Piece: 633
Folio: 24/3, Page: 3.

Can anyone tell me why this would be? I know Fulstow and Marsh Chapel are very close. Would the enumerator just have filled in the wrong page? The family appear on several subsequent census living in Marsh Chapel.

If anyone could shed any light on this I would be very grateful.

Thanks

The Common Room / COMPLETED - THANK YOU IGI Query
« on: Friday 02 October 09 23:07 BST (UK)  »
On the IGI I have found an extracted chritening record for my ancestor - his parents are named as John Ward and Mary Skelton - does that mean they were unmarried?

I can't find a marriage for them although it may be in a different parish.

Thanks

Kim
