Family History Beginners Board / India and the Army

I am trying to help a friend trace their roots, and they have a Grandfather born Circa 1905 whom they believe was born in India whilst there father was on Military Service.

Any ideas where to start looking for this one.

They have a Marriage Cert (which was in the UK), but no other information.

Sussex Lookup Requests / Fred Maskell 1891/1901
« on: Friday 19 January 07 18:33 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone can help, as I have hit a real brickwall on this one.

I have an ancestor, Fred Maskell born 1876 Brighton,Sussex and I can find him in the 1881 but not in the 1891 or 1901 census returns.

I am fairly sure he was illiterate, so this may be a problem in the spelling of his surname, but to go missing for two censi?

Any thoughts or lookup help would be appreciated.

Cheshire / Youds in Cheshire.
« on: Thursday 23 November 06 18:24 GMT (UK)  »
Just a question on how other people are handling the way that a surname changes as you go back in time.

The modern spelling of the family surname that I am researching is Youd.  However as you get back into the early 1800's and into the 1700's the name changes from Youd to Youde to Yewd or even Yould.

I am using Family Historian as a way storing all of the infromation I have gathered, and this copes with the idea that a person can have different names.  With the idea that one is the primary name.

What do others do on here?  As I am collecting more of the Youds around North Cheshire, this is becoming more of a problem as the number increases.

Any idea's on how to cope with the changing name.

Plus if anyone wants to add to my collection, then that would be great, as the name is not that common and I would love to join them all up. What I have already is meaning this is turning into a bit of a one name study.

Aberdeenshire / 1851 Census
« on: Thursday 15 December 05 10:39 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help me.

I have the family I am looking for in the 41 and 61 census.  But in the 61 I can't figure out where the father is from and in the 41 it is just out of county.

It is the family of Robert Whyte.  Born in about 1784.  Living in a Farm called Bracklaymore? in the Parish  of Aberdour.

He is married to Mary, with sons of John and Robert and also 3 daughters.

Does any one have access to the 51 and could look this up for me, or know when the 51 may be available online?

Essex Completed Lookup Requests / 1841/51 Miller Dovercourt
« on: Monday 05 September 05 13:00 BST (UK)  »
Trying to find information on two sisters Jane and Emma Miller.

Jane was born in 1843 and Emma was born in 1839.  I have them both in 1871, can't find them in 1861 and was wondering if some kind soul could try and find them in 41/51.

I have their place of birth as Dovercourt Essex according to the 1871/81 cesnus.

Cheshire / Kirkham in Helsby
« on: Thursday 01 September 05 09:53 BST (UK)  »
I have found a Thomas Kirkham in my family tree.  I have his will from the Cheshire record office, and it would appear that he was more than the average ag-lab.

I think he died in 1821, but that and what is in the will is all I know about him.  I do know hs soons and daughters and also his wife.

I wondered if anyone could shed any light on the family at all, or how to move forward and find out extra info?

Cheshire / Knowles - William or Gulielmi
« on: Sunday 21 August 05 23:42 BST (UK)  »
Can someone help me?

I found the following two names in the IGI in the 1660/70's at Great Budworth.

Is one just the Latin name of the other?

Guilielmi begats a Margareta

William begats a Sarah.

Do you think they are sisters of a common father - William?
