London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / William Stuart Foulis
« on: Friday 10 February 17 12:58 GMT (UK)  »
In earlier posts I was looking for William Carrick Foulis.  His brother Robert James Foulis named him as executor in his will in 1895, as William Stuart Foulis of 105 Bethnal Green Road, London.  When Robert J Foulis died in 1897 William Foulis was removed at his request as executor.  William was listed as William Steward Foulis on the Electoral Roll as living at 108 Bethnal Green Road in 1897 and 1898.

Next comes his death 8th November 1905, London County Asylum, Banstead, William Stuart Foulis, aged 37 years, and under occupation 'Unknown' below which is written "St Marylebone Workhouse'.

If anyone can help fill the gaps between 1898 and 1905 I would be grateful - William was admitted to Banstead on 12th August 1905, presumably from Marylebone Workhouse but cannot find any records of his admittance.  Have searched the 1901 census records but to no avail.

Thank you for your interest and help

Could I ask for help please....

Are there surviving records for Henbury Church, or an Online Parish Clerk who could help please.  As with a previous post am looking for evidence of a marriage between Alice Mary Maggs and Frederick Abley.  This marriage was reported in the local newspaper, Bristol Mercury, as taking place 20 November 1866.

Alice and Frederick were 1st cousins so not sure this marriage was legal in 1866??

Thank you for helping

« on: Monday 15 September 14 13:39 BST (UK)  »
Bristol Newspaper report reads as follows:

1866, 20 November at Henbury by Reverend John Hugh Way, Frederick John only son of Mr Matthew Abley of Hallen to Miss Alice Mary Maggs of Westbury on Trym.

Cannot find a record of this marriage on Free BMD or on A.......y

Frederick John is son of Matthew Abley and Diana Maggs.  Frederick marries Emily E Beer (mother of a daughter Caroline) February 1872

Alice Mary Maggs Born 1846 illegitimate daughter of Elizabeth Maggs (sister to Diana Maggs) in 1861 census is a dressmaker living with her grandparents At Westbury village.  No 1871 census record but in 1878 Alice marries George Bull in Dublin Ireland.  On the marriage certificate George states he is a widower and Alice a spinster, wonder if transcriber got this wrong??

I wonder if a kind Rootschatter could cast an eye over this mystery and solve somehow please?  I do not have the marriage certificate for Frederick Abley to Emily Beer so have not seen his status.

Shropshire / John Griffiths
« on: Monday 18 August 14 13:52 BST (UK)  »
Help, please.  Am looking for John Griffiths born 1863 at Llanymynech, Shropshire.  Son of William Griffiths born 1836, and Mary Jones born 1841-1921
Siblings
Mary Hannah Griffiths born Llanymynech 1869, married to William Alma Aylmer Lewis 1855-1930, surgeon and JP, Oswestry
Frances Elizabeth Griffiths born Llanymynech 1870-1941, married Charles Penry Bullock 1862-1933
William - no other info except a reference in a marriage report for a niece.

In census 1891 John is working as assistant Surgeon and GP to a doctor in Scarborough, Yorkshire.  I lose him then, no reference I can find for 1901 or 1911 census records.  The next reference is in 1921 when his mother dies, Bramhall, Chesire, probate to John Griffiths, surgeon then again in 1933 when Charles Penry Bullock referes to John Griffiths, retired surgeon, in his will.

Can a keen eyed Rootschatter find John Griffiths after 1891 please??

Canada / William Foulis
« on: Thursday 27 June 13 17:10 BST (UK)  »
William Foulis born Auchterarder 8th March 1844, appear on 1851 and 1861 census.

Next I found his obituary, (in reference to nephew Robert Buckland Foulis).  This states that he was a Major, '78 Highlanders later transferred to Royal 8 Highlanders. Paymaster. Also mentions veteran of Fenian Raids and of Grand Trunk Railway'.  I think reference means that he was a clerk with the Grand Trunk Railway.

Is it possible that a helpful Rootschatter could help fill in the details of 78 Highlanders later transferred to Royal 8 Highlanders.  I have tried but am confused by the number of regiments, naming etc.

Did William join in Scotland or emigrate to Canada and then join up?  I am posting this also on the Canadian board

I have found Canadian census records for 1871, 1881 (cannot find 1891), 1901 (census states he immigrated 1869), and 1911

In 1868 marries All Jane Daly in Montreal and they have 5 children
