South Africa / Gouws Family dilemma.
« on: Monday 18 March 19 05:49 GMT (UK)  »
It seems my grandmother, SUSARA MARIA ALETTA GOUWS may have been illegitimate.
She was born on 22 April 1886/7 in Britstown, Northern Cape Province.
Her mother may have been Helen (Ellie) Gouws  (nee Murray), sister to Andrew Murray, the preacher, but on Helen's death cert. there is no mention of a marriage or of having a child, though it seems she did have a daughter born out of wedlock according to (Cape Province Probate 1834-1989 in Familysearch.org.
On my grandmother's marriage cert. on 30 January 1906 it mentions her foster-father as David Johannes Erasmus, but not her mother's name.
I am not sure if Gouws is her real father's name or an adoptive parent's name or whether Helen Murray did indeed marry a Gouws.
Is there anyone researching the Gouws family who can shed some light for me and be able to produce a birth certificate.
Many thanks

Fife / Temperance Hotel, Falkland
« on: Wednesday 04 March 15 03:41 GMT (UK)  »
My great grandfather, Robert Ness died at The Liquorstane Temperance Hotel, Falkland on 14 May 1897.  His wife, Catherine and and two of their daughter, Ann and Mary were the hotel keepers after that.

Can anyone give me any information about this hotel or the Ness family who were carriers / coachmen in the Falkland area around the turn of the century.

Many thanks
Lorand.

World War One / Battle of St Quentin March 1918
« on: Saturday 17 January 15 05:56 GMT (UK)  »
My grandfather, Pte. Archibald McCall (Mac Call) was with the Wiltshire Reg. # 26982 and was captured at the Battle of St Quentin in 1918 and in a German POW camp until the end of the war.

I am hoping to find any other information about his WW1 service prior to this.  He had previously been in the Dorset Reg # 27987 and they were merged in with the Wiltshires at some stage.  He may have been at the Codford Training Camp in Wiltshire at the start of the war.

I have not been able to find much on any of the websites and hope someone with similar records might be able to help.

Thanks Lorand

I would love to have this photo of my grandfather's regiment clarified and restored please.  He was Archibald Ness McCall and was sitting to the right of the officer in the centre.

I'm not sure of this regiment as he was in both the Dorset and Wiltshire ones and was a POW until the end of the war.

Thank you Lorand

Armed Forces / Help please with POW record.
« on: Tuesday 28 October 14 00:51 GMT (UK)  »
My grandfather, ARCHIBALD NESS MCCALL was resident in Fife, Scotland during WW1.  He was initially enlisted  with the Dorset Reg. Pvt. #27987, and then with the Wiltshire Reg. Pvt. #26982.

I know from his sister's letters that he had been a POW in a German camp for some time as he managed to learn a fair bit of German.  He had never spoken about this to anyone, as far as I know.
I would dearly like to know if anyone can help me find out which camp he was in and if there are any records of medals, awards or correspondence.

He was born on 7 June 1897 in Coldingham, Berwick, Scotland and his parents were James and Christina McCall.  My grandfather went on to serve in WW2 in N Africa with the S African forces.

I would be grateful for any info of his WW1 POW record.  Thanks Lorand.

World War One / POW McCall Archibald Ness
« on: Tuesday 03 June 14 05:04 BST (UK)  »
The only document I have of my grandfather's war history is this one.

He was Archibald Ness McCall, b 7/6/1897, the only Scot in an English regiment and was a POW.  I am trying to find out what German camp he was in and when he was captured.  He returned home safely at the end of the war and could speak fluent German, so must have been a POW for some time.

Can I trace anything from the info on this document, and what do the numbers in the Roll column indicate?   His Dorset Reg No is Pte. 27987 and the Wiltshire Reg is 26982.

Many thanks.

Lanarkshire / Searching for a Blue
« on: Wednesday 13 February 13 06:16 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find out about a certain DUNCAN BLUE, b abt. 1838 in Lockgilphead, Argylshire, and was working as a ploughman in Gartloch Rd.  Shettleston, Lanarkshire in the 1861 census, presumably as a farm servant.

This Duncan Blue may be the father of my illegitimate  gt. grandfather, James Blue Galloway, son of Ann Galloway, who was also a farm servant working at  Easter Qu Farm in the same census in Shettleston.

I have been unable to get a baptism cert. for James who was born on 8 June 1865 in Cadder and not sure if it would have stated the father's name anyway.

Any help would be appreciated.
