Other Countries / Sri Lanka/Ceylon Tea Planters and settlers from Britain 1850s
« on: Monday 16 March 15 23:21 GMT (UK)  »
Hi.  I will be posting a couple of queries here shortly, my first time.  I have been a long-time supporter of an Irish chat forum on RootsChat but one of y families is taking me into this, for me, unchartered area and I really hope that I can find some kind listers with some suggestions or answers.

Europe / HALPIN in France
« on: Wednesday 08 May 13 00:07 BST (UK)  »
Two or three instances of this name, HALPIN, have popped up in France in relation to my research into an IRISH family.  Halpin and its variant spellings is an Irish surname but many have settled in Britain over long periods of time.  However, I should think it is a very rare name in France.

In the 1840s, A. Halpin (possibly R. Halpin) of the Kingdom of France witnessed a document in Dublin, Ireland.

A shipping record shows the ship Undine arrived in Dover from Calais on 22 August 1851.  The captain declared his "alien" passengers to customs including Halpin (no forename or initials), Gentleman, and France as his place of residence.

Might there have been further shipping records for such a routine crossing at the time?

I am afraid that my school days French does not get me far in trying to access French online records.  I would really appreciate help as to how I might go about this search.

Wicklow / Halpins of Wicklow, etc. - Part 4
« on: Thursday 25 April 13 00:55 BST (UK)  »
For reasons unknown, I have not been receiving notification of posts since late Feb and thought the list had gone dormant.  Far from it, good to see.  I just logged on to record a piece of information on Capt William Halpin, which is minor by recent standards.

Peninsular Medal Roll 1793-1814. King's German Legion.  1st Light Dragoons.   Halpin, William, Paymr. 4 Clasps.  Sal. Vitt. Orthes. Toul. [The Battle of Salamanca was in July 1812, the Battle of Vitoria in June 1813, Battle of Orthez in February 1814, Toulouse April 1814 ].

All of William's fellow officers had German surnames.  He had the most clasps of the unit apart from one other.  The names of over 26,000 men are listed in the Peninsular Medal Roll.

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) Lookup Requests / Beverley - Webster
« on: Monday 30 July 12 11:33 BST (UK)  »
Firstly I would like to know how far back the PRs for Beverley St Mary and Beverley St John exist please.  Is it the same as contained at FamilySearch?

My ancestor ROBERT WEBSTER, it seems to be confirmed by corroborating evidence, was baptised at St John, 2/9/1729 to EDWARD WEBSTER, heel maker.

An Edward Webster married at Hull HT on 9/4/1727 who could have been this father and there are some others nearby.  A strong candidate is one who married Jane Medforth at Beverley St Mary on 27/7/1718.

Children were baptised at St Mary to Edward Webster in 1721, 23, 26, 28, 30, but if Robert is one of this family, why was he baptised at St John?

In any event, I am hoping to get back to earlier records to see if I can link this Edward to one of the 9 Websters listed in the 1672 Hearth Tax for Beverley.  Do I have any hopes?

Thank you.

Wicklow / Halpins of Wicklow - Part 3
« on: Friday 20 August 10 22:56 BST (UK)  »
Welcome everyone.  Ray Halpin, who had taken on the former thread, has requested that I initiate the continued one, which I am only too happy to do.  The previous 30 pages only took from February to August to fill, half a year, and I think much progress was made.
This is not a "closed" discussion group and I encourage new contributors with fresh material, or comments on past material, to enter the discussion.  We all benefit mutually from each and every contribution.
I encourage all of us to dip into the last 60 pages (for which the Moderator has kindly supplied links).  The intensity of discussion and contributions sometimes leads to overlooking what has already been discovered and achieved.  Not only that, with our most up-to-date knowledge, we can get fresh perspectives on the older material, most of which retains its original integrity.
With best wishes, Bill.

Mayo / Parker family & Hamilton link?
« on: Saturday 15 August 09 23:21 BST (UK)  »
What are my best ways of finding a family in times before Griffiths and civil registration?  The family was almost certainly not Catholic at the time, probably C of I.

Margaret Parker was born in the late 1780s.

William Hamilton Parker in 1831 lived in Westport.  He is either Margaret's brother or father as he is an exector of Margaret's husband's will.

In Slaters 1846 Directory for Mayo (Nobility, Gentry & Clergy):

William Hamilton Parker, Esq., JP.

I know no more than this, unfortunately.

Thanks and regards

Bill.

Galway / TUAM marriage 1805 - PARKER
« on: Sunday 17 May 09 05:56 BST (UK)  »
From British army officers records, regimental surgeon RICHARD WEBSTER married at Tuam 22 DEC 1805 MARGARET PARKER.

I don't KNOW that Margaret Parker came form Tuam, or Galway, but that is what I  wish to discover.  She was only aged about 19 so perhaps not yet old enough to be a 'woman of the world'.  Her husband was with the 4th Light Battalion of Foot division of the 90th Foot Regiment.  It is possible that this unit was stationed at or near Tuam and that is why the marriage was there.  He was not Irish.

I would be interested to learn of any PARKER  families from Tuam or Galway.  Do church records survive (probably Church of Ireland) from which to look up this marriage?

This couple's first recorded child was born in Dublin 2 years after their marriage.
