Dorset Lookup Requests / Hampshire Court Flats - Bournemouth
« on: Wednesday 10 June 15 07:27 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have the wherewithall to check a 1938 electoral roll or telephone directory for Hampshire Court Flats in Bournemouth?  To cut a long story short I am a volunteer at the Phyllis Tuckwell Charity Shop in Godalming and we have been donated an album full of 200 odd photos  but NO surnames!!  I'm hell bent on finding family and trying to pick up any clue I can.  The lady album owner moved to Bournemouth to a flat in Hampshire Gardens somewhere between 1936 and 1937 with one son, John.  The chap she is married to is Dick (Richard presumably), a Merchant Seaman Chief Officer (possibly crewing on the Queen Mary).  I know... very little to go on but if I can at least pick up some surnames I can try tracking back with other clues.

Thank you
Sue

Lanarkshire / LIGHTBODY FAMILY
« on: Thursday 16 January 14 18:05 GMT (UK)  »
John Douglas Lightbody b 1899 Hamilton, was killed in Action over Belgium in 1918.  He was an ace pilot with several victories to his name and is buried at Scheldevindeke Church in Belgium.  Each year he is commemorated and this year a special ceremony is being held.  They are looking for any descendants as it would certainly be lovely to have a living relative present along with the other dignitaries being invited.

Long shot I know but if anyone is related or knows someone who may be - as luck would have it have not found anyone following his family tree! - please contact me.

Angus (Forfarshire) / GRACIE family
« on: Sunday 30 December 12 22:04 GMT (UK)  »
Is anyone tracing the Gracie family of Dundee, namely Alexander Porteous Gracie and David Keir Gracie?  I have inherited a couple of photos (which I believe are of Alexander) from my father.  They have absolutely nothing to do with my family and I am uncertain why he had them other than that they may have served with my grandfather in WW1.  I would love to pass copies to relatives.

Devon / Where do I go from here? - any ideas?
« on: Wednesday 08 December 10 07:12 GMT (UK)  »
Part 1 (as I don't seem to be able to type much in the box!)

Searching for some concrete evidence linking my g2 grandfather to his parents.

William Robins (carpenter) was born (according to marriage and census) around 1806 in Devon.  Father: John Robins.

Married Eliza Gilbert Bickford 1837 East Stonehouse.

I have never found William's birth details.

However....with the online launch of the London Baptism records I found two children to William and Eliza whom I didn't know exisited.  They were born 1839 and 1843 and died in infancy.  I purchased their birth certificates which confirmed everything.  One was born in St Sidwell, Exeter, the other in Kensington.  Both were baptised in 1843 in London.

The interesting thing was their names, John Kellaway Robins and William Collicot Robins.  Some Google searching brough up the following: (see Par 2 next post!)

5
John - Corporal 14th Regiment.  Father Thomas Fagan - Glassmaker
Isabella's Father - John Robins, Carpenter

Married in the Chapel of East Stonehouse

Witnesses: James Smith and John Lamoureux (Clerk)

Birth

Daughter to Edward Groves and Sarah Groves (Goodman).  Edwards was a Carman - they lived at 9 Bridgewater Gardens, London

8
BIRTH

Daughter of William Grover and Ann Grover (Fleet - I think!) - William was Gardener.

Was looking for a Mary A Groves, b c 1862/63.  One census had the whole family listed as Grover instead of Groves.  Have been absolutely unable to find her!

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / GROVES - Hendon - Harrow on Hill
« on: Tuesday 28 November 06 14:42 GMT (UK)  »
I am stumped looking for the birth of my great grandmother Mary A Groves, daughter of George Groves and Jane (Wright).  Mary, according to census, should have been born around 1863.  Despite the fact that all of her siblings were born in the Hendon district in Harrow I cannot find her birth.

Anyone have ideas for tracking it down other than me ordering every Mary A Groves certificate on the BMD index within a year or two of that date!

Thanks
