Kilkenny / Mounteen in Gowran
« on: Monday 26 September 16 14:09 BST (UK)  »
I am from Australia and researching my ancestors in Ireland. This is my first possible finding of ancestors in Ireland.

I think I may have found a marriage for my gg grandparents and subsequent baptisms for the couple's children. The Catholic marriage occurred in June 1845 in the Gowran parish. Find My Past has the address of the bride as Mounteen. The actual record lists both the groom and bride's names then the placename 'Mounteen' It then lists the witnesses names followed by 'Wihigan'. Are these the names of towns? If so where in Kilkenny are they? Would they actually be the places the couple and then the witnesses lived?

The baptisms include one in 1847 with the placename 'Blauchville? Town and 1850 Cleart?

I would love it anyone can tell me more about these places.

Would the marriage & baptisms have been performed in a church? If so, any idea which ones? I would love to find out more about these also.

Kind Regards,

« on: Friday 12 July 13 12:36 BST (UK)  »
I have been searching for my great uncles for some time now. One of my great uncles Alfred CROW was born in South Reston Lincolnshire in 1901 and after purchasing his birth certificate recently I may have found his death in 1980 in Carlisle Cumbria.

Can anyone provide any more information on the Alfred CROW that died in 1980 in Carlisle?

This is the first possible relative in Cumbria

Huntingdonshire / Bishop and Neal families Peterborough area
« on: Thursday 10 May 12 13:31 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I am new to this list and a bit stuck & confused.  :-\

My great grandfather John Bishop is listed on FreeBMD as dying June 1/4 1904 in Peterborough. I had tried to get a copy of his death certificated from Cambridgeshire with no luck. Is my only option to go to the General Registry Office? Under which county does Peterborough fall.

At the time of his death he was a police constable with the Coates Constabulary. He died on duty. I have been hoping that somewhere in a newspaper of the time there would have been a piece regarding his death. I have been advised by a police historian that he died 21st April 1904. He was buried in the Coates churchyard but to date I have not been able to confirm if his plot has a headstone. Does anyone have access to the Peterborough area papers of that time? (I live in Australia). I am hoping someone can find something covering his death and funeral.

On his death his wife remarried to a widower named Thomas Henry Neal. He had several children from his first marriage. I wonder if the following names may be familiar to anyone. William Isaac Neal b 1895, Rose Neal b 1896 married William Benstead, Harry Neal b 1897 married Mabel Weldon, Arthur Neal b 1998 d 1916; Grace Neal b 1899 married George Ruff, May Elizabeth Kate Neal b1901 married Charles Gordon.

Any help much appreciated. I have been stuck on both these areas for quite some time.

Another photo of my great uncle. This time a close up which is wonderful. Besides the obvious stamp from the newspaper it has been creased and has been covered by what appears to be clear contact. Hoping you can work your magic. From what I can tell he was retiring after 45 years with the railways. No date given but should be about 1950s as he was born 1890.

I have just received this photo of my great uncle and aunt from a cousin by email. Sorry no back.

It looks as though it has water staining. Could someone please work their magic on the photo to remove this.

As my great uncle was born in 1890 I think the photo was taken in about the 1930s or 1940s. Would you agree?

Best wishes to all.

World War One / Certificate help & service info of Arthur Edward Crowe
« on: Saturday 25 February 12 03:57 GMT (UK)  »
Some time ago when I was a member of Ancestry I downloaded a few pages from a soldier's record who I thought could be my grandfather's brother Arthur Edward Crow /e. I have a copy of the medal card for No 61653 which states he was in the Lincolnshire Regiment.

He is born about the correct time and his next of kin John Crow of the Queens Head Legbourne Louth fits with what I have been told of my own grandfather's next of kin on his enlistment "JE Crow Queans Head Legbourne"

The Certificate I have attached has me confused. It is a "Protection Certificate or Certificate of Identity" and states it is for a soldier not remaining with the colours. Does this mean  the "colours" included the Lincolnshire Regiment?

It looks like he served another twelve months after the war ended? Was this normal?

The certificate says Unit: 15 P.O.W. What does this stand for?

Is there anything more anyone can add for him.

I am at a standstill.

I hope this is the correct board for such a post. I was tossing up between this board and the photo board. (Moderator comment: moved to Photo Restoration and Dating board :) )

The photo attached is from a postcard. The post mark does not look English. Can anyone recognize it?

Also would you say the photo is about 1910 to 1914?
Is the girl aged about 10 to 12?

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Please date gg uncle
« on: Saturday 18 February 12 07:09 GMT (UK)  »
This photo I believe is of my gg uncle born 1881. He served on the the Theseus during WW1. If I am correct as to his approx age then it was taken around WW1 and no later. Sorry the picture has no borders and only a plain back.

The second photo is again of the same person but with two young girls. I believe it is taken at the same sitting. How old do you think they are? Another relative believes they are his daughters but they were born 1927 and 1936. He married 1926.  I have not found an earlier marriage for him. Would it be possible that he had a portrait taken with nieces perhaps? Sorry the size of the last photo is not great. I was sent the image by a relative.

Feel free if you wish to spruce him up a bit.

« on: Tuesday 20 December 11 06:28 GMT (UK)  »
My husband has just found this old photo which he thinks will be of his great nan. Unfortunately the copy is creased.

Any help in any way improving this image would be much appreciated. Please feel free to crop to suit  as there is a lot of space above her in the original photo.

Best wishes  :)
