Derbyshire / Jacob and Mary EYRE of Bradwell
« on: Thursday 14 June 18 11:25 BST (UK)  »
I've posted in the Common Room but here may be more appropriate. Both my Sellers and Eyres ancestors moved from the Hope area into Manchester in the early 1800s.
I'm fascinated by the idea that the Eyres might have had some Jewish ancestry. This first occurred to me when I discovered that Jacob Eyre's (1780 - 1838) mother was Hannah Fox (1755 - 1812)
So many of the Eyres use the names Isaac, Jacob, Benjamin, Rachel, Rebecca, and Hannah that it set me wondering. Were these names just common to all at the time? Or an Old Testament fashion?
Further back I have traced a Judith Mabel Franks (x7 g/gmother)
But my main interest is the network of Eyres who lived in Hope, Woodland, Castleton and Tideswell. They were baptised, married and buried through the established church, but then I imagine they would have no alternative. Many remained in the dale but my particular branch of the family removed to Dukinfield.
Would appreciate any views.

My 2 x Gt-Grandmother was Charlotte Eyre (1808 -1888) who along with many others moved from Derbyshire to Manchester. I find that she had siblings called Isaac, Jacob, Benjamin, Hannah, and Rachel. I realise that during the C18-19th there was a fashion for Old Testament names ( especially amongst Nonconformists) but when I researched back further I find not only that these first names persist but that I have a 4 x Gt-grandmother called Hannah Fox, and a 7x called Judith Mabel Franks.
There are many Eyres living in Hope, Bradwell, Castleton who seem to share these first names so am I reading too much into? I know scarcely anything about the history of the Jewish people in England between 1300 - 1900. Presumably they had to some extent to fit in and adopt Christian baptism, marriage and burial.
I have an eclectic genealogy, being Irish, Scottish and Northumbrian, but I should be delighted to think that I had a Jewish element too.

Cheshire Lookup Requests / Amorias (sic) Sellars, baptism at Christ Church, Denton
« on: Sunday 06 February 11 18:31 GMT (UK)  »
I hope my geography is correct and that Denton, Manchester was regarded as Cheshire in 1840! Please, could someone who has access to Christ Church's baptisms check my ancestor's - Amorias Sellars - baptism on Feb 2nd 1840 ( parents Wm/Alice) and let me know who the clergyman was officiating. I'm trying to discover how my great grandfather came to have the name Amarias. The boy was not named at the time of his civil registration in Nov 1839 so I'm wondering if the priest had a hand in choosing the name, and why IGI logs the child as female!

Durham Lookup Requests / Houghton le Spring Workhouse: burials?
« on: Sunday 30 January 11 12:00 GMT (UK)  »
My great grandfather - Amarias Sellars - died on 19th December 1918 at the 'Poor Law Institution Hospital, Houghton le Spring' His given age was 82, though he was in fact born 1839. But where is he buried? At that time would indigent persons be given a pauper's burial nearby, and if so where? His death cert shows him still working !! ( as a colliery sinker) at time of death and his abode as 61 George Street, Blaydon. Would his body have been returned to Blaydon for burial? I think he had very little if any family surviving, but am anxious to try to discover his last resting place. His very unusual name - Amarias ( variant Amaris) should be a help.

Durham Lookup Requests / St Mary's churchyard, HEWORTH.
« on: Wednesday 15 September 10 12:35 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have a plan of the graves or any idea of who's buried where?  I know this is a huge ask as the site is large. My ancestor Jane McGowan was buried there 3rd March 1895 and her husband James McGowan on 23rd June 1917. I'd be grateful for any help.
(btw the grave between bypass and church with several McGowens is James's parents and siblings)

Durham Lookup Requests / Milburn burial at Burnopfield and Marley Hill
« on: Sunday 12 September 10 14:33 BST (UK)  »
My Gt Grandmother Jane MILBURN was buried at St James, Burnopfield, November 1915 - to my surprise! as I'd always thought it would be Marley Hill, as they lived at School Houses, near Byermoor. But I can't find my gt Grandfather's burial. He was John Wilson Milburn, (1852-1919) Could anyone check to see if he too was buried at St James, Burnopfield or St Cuthbert's, Marley Hill?  He died first quarter 1919. Many thanks.

« on: Wednesday 08 September 10 19:01 BST (UK)  »
During my researches I obtained two birth certificates relating to Jane Turnbulls that turned out not to be mine. I'll happily mail or scan these to anyone who feels she is their relative.

Born 24th July 1838, Bottle Bank, Gateshead to father Thomas ( labourer) and mother Ann ( formerly George)

Born 29th October 1844, Garden St, Gateshead, to father Robert ( boiler builder ) and mother Jane ( formerly Smith)  ( this is the Robert Turnbull born 1809 chester le street I think)

Durham / Missing McGee from Felling.
« on: Tuesday 07 September 10 09:26 BST (UK)  »
My ancestors James McGee and Mary Jane McGee came from Ireland. On the 1881 census they are shown at 12  Carlisle St, Felling, Gateshead, with their sons David and Thomas. There was also a boarder called Alexander Marletts(?). Then they disappear! All except Thomas McGee, who married Ellen Jane McGowan and remained in Co Durham till his death in 1935. I have tried for over 20 years to find the whereabouts of the other McGees ( or possibly McKee as they were known) but without success. Anyone with local knowledge of Felling or maybe winning ways with the ancestry software???

Northumberland Lookup Requests / Missing Milburns of Swinhope, Allenheads
« on: Monday 06 September 10 15:56 BST (UK)  »
My Gt x 3 grandparents were Henry MILBURN and Ann WARD ( b. 1817/26 resp)  They married in 1849 and appear on the 1851 census in Swinhope Row, alongside Henry's mother Hannah, nee Coulson. They have a one year old son Robert.  The family is still in place ( Middle Ridge) in 1861 with children Robert, John, Joseph H and Richard P(arker).  I can trace mother Ann, John, Joseph, and Richard P from 1881 till their deaths, in neighbouring Derwentside, but I cannot discover where the entire family was in 1871 or what became of Henry Milburn and son Robert. Could someone kindly check St Peter's, Allenheads, deaths to see if Henry/Robert occur there? A further child Mary Hannah was born to Ann in 1867 so Henry must have died post that.  Many thanks.
