Technical Help / New Laptop
« on: Tuesday 25 June 19 13:31 BST (UK)  »
I wish to announce the imminent death of my laptop (bits falling off etc). So, I have bought a new one! My old laptop has Family Tree Maker 2014 on in order to record my 15 years of research currently held on a memory stick. Apparently, I cannot move this programme to my new laptop. So, how can I access, maintain and update my existing records without paying an extraodinary large amount for the new version of this programme.

Is Uploading to an internet site the answer.

Family History Beginners Board / Census taking
« on: Friday 03 August 18 21:07 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone tell me what instructions were given to the English census enumerators in the 1800's regarding recording the order of the properties he visited. For example, which end of a road he should start, should he start on the right and work to the end then return up the left hand side or could he zig zag across the road as he went along? Plus, if he had to return to a property at a later date to complete the household details, could these be recorded on the census summary not in the order that the properties appear "on the ground".

I am trying to identify the occupants of one particular house throughout the decades where the cottages were not given a house number or name. I have analysed the census summaries for the road in question which shows that
1. there was no logic to the order in which the properties were recorded on the summaries or
2. the families in the road were constantly moving their furniture up and down the road on their hand carts to different cottages whilst keeping the same neighbours! Peewee

Technical Help / Cannot access my computer records.... HELP
« on: Friday 15 September 17 16:53 BST (UK)  »
I had been using FTM 2008 for many years and 3 years ago I had it updated to FTM 2014. Then laptop through a wobbler and I lost FTM but, I had saved the data to my memory stick.

When I insert my memory stick, the laptop will not read my family tree data. In desperation I reloaded my FTM 2008 but still no joy. (FTM 2008 was only compatable to Windows XP and Vista) whereas my laptop is running Windows 8.1

Has anyone got any ideas how I can resolve this? Thanks peewee

Canada / Complete novice
« on: Monday 21 March 16 21:02 GMT (UK)  »
I'll hold my hands up, I know nothing about Canadian genealogical research. Searching my wife's ancestry I find that her deceased uncle, Dennis Bertram H Pilcher joined the RAF in WW2. He was born in Shoreditch, London in 1923 and died in 2003

He was posted to Charlottetown on Prince Edward Island. I have found that the RAF and Canadian RAF flew Avro Ansons from this base which was also a training centre.

In 1943 he married a local woman named Murnaham. After the war he returned to the UK but I am pretty sure that Miss Murnaham did not join him. Any information about this couple or their issue (if died) would be appreciated.

Thankyou in anticipation. Peewee

London and Middlesex / Historians' advice re Kensington please
« on: Friday 27 November 15 16:41 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching a man who, in 1881, lived in Petersham Mews, Kensington. RG11 22. His occupation was a coachman/ domestic servant.  I notice that the census for Petersham Mews and others lists families where the head of the household has the same occupation or trades allied to it such as Grooms. There are dozens and dozens of them covering many census pages. Just out of interest, can any historians tell me why so many families whose incomes come from the same source are living cheek by jowl with each other. Thanks Peewee

Wales / Lusitania victim
« on: Friday 23 October 15 19:44 BST (UK)  »
I have placed this request on the Wales notice board given the fact that the gentleman's music career includes performing in Barmouth.

On behalf of his elderly  grandson, I am seeking information about the career of an entertainer named Edward Carr Jones. Edward was the pianist in the orchestra of the Lusitania when she was torpedoed and sank on 7th May 1915. His body was never found.

Edward was born with the name Edward Jones in Hanley / Stoke around 1876. He later added the name Carr. Information on the internet show that Edward undertook several trips from Liverpool to New York on the Carmania and the Lusitania. In the 1901 census he describes himself as a "professor of music" which was probably an affectation.

In an obituary in the Barmouth and County Advertiser dated the 20th May 1915, Edward was described as a member of a group of musicians named the Royal Magnets. I have found a photograph of the group but Edward's grandson has no idea which one was his grandfather.
I wonder if there is anyone who can throw any light on the musical career of Edward Carr Jones.

Would one of you kind souls "clean up" this photograph of my ancestor John Edward Worton who was killed in action in 1915.

Many thanks in anticipation
